Gretsch White Falcon Players Edition - www.pmtonline.co.uk/gretsch-p...
It's a Gretsch White Falcon shootout! Jim has got his hands on the Gretsch G6136T-59GE Vintage Select model and the G6636T Players Edition w/ centre block. Complete with full tone test, close up details and summary. Only one guitar can come out on top, which do you prefer?
First, the original. The Vintage Select model stays traditional to its roots, single cut away, hollow body design with the Gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish, gold vintage style Grover tuners, gold sparkle binding it just screams '59 White Falcon.
It really does look the part and it sure as hell sounds it too! The G6136T-59 is loaded with two TV Jones Classic pickups (see a full tonal run down in the video!) which sound incredible, especially being overdriven and fired out of a tube amp, volume on 11!
Now, a purest will tell you "You can't have a double cut away White Falcon" but we say, give the kid a chance! Aside from the obvious difference in the body (double cut away) it has a laminated maple body, a gloss white finish, gold Grover imperial locking tuners, two High Sensitive Filter'Tron pickups and of course a centre block. Not a bad start...
The G6636T is easy on the eye too, featuring pearloid inlays, 'Jewelled G-Arrow' control knobs, gold sparkle large Gretsch logo head stock and of course a gold plated bigsby.
For the full run down make sure you check out the video where we show off both these gorgeous axes in all their glory.

Just to help people out, and clear up possible misunderstanding re the tone switch on the vintage select model, when the switch is in the middle position the tone control is bypassed, when in the down position it's the equivalent of 8 or 9 on a conventional tone pot, and when in the up position it's the equivalent of 5 or 6 on a conventional tone pot.

I own both yayyy I'm such a rich asshole. Let me tell ya. It's simple... There is the vintage select shit which is old school and captures that feel, theme, and just plain sound. TV JONES! And the newer one feels slightly easier to play, has locking tuners, better weight balance, slightly thinner body, and has the all new high sensitive filter boyz. Also the wiring is less complicated. I can't choose which one I like more. Depends on my mood. Old school or new school? And both can imitate the other pretty well. Some of the best guitars one could own : )

But in the end still Japanese. I don’t want a Japanese guitar.

After the knobs and switches explanations, could you please do a riff of 3 seconds on the vintage, immediately followed by the same on the modern version? Next setting: 3 seconds on one, 3 seconds on the other, etc, etc. That way, the differences are clearer.

Maybe the video wouldn't have been able to handle two White Falcons full up on tone. That's why he had the mud switch activated on the vs the entire time?

I could do without the crunch. Just play it clean. What does it really sound like? And also a more serious amplifier. Otherwise nice vid. I have a 72 that has low ohm pickups in stereo. I made a special preamp for it. It's good fun.

Every other white falcon video plays a clean progression, I for one only wanted to hear it’s crunch sounds

I like guitar demos that are just the guitar and the amp. No reverb or any effects to interfere with the guitar's true sound. After all most of us are here to evaluate the guitar on its' own merits.

Vintage select all the way 👍 The modern one just isn't synonymous with a Falcon in my opinion....Different size, different thickness, different tone circuit, and it doesn't sound like a Falcon. Other manufacturers can make different models of Les Pauls & Strats etc but at the end of the day they still look & sound like the guitars they're supposed to be. If it's gonna be a Falcon then it has to be a big deep hollow body, not that thin centre block thing, where the only things it has in common with a proper Falcon are that it's white and the shape of the headstock. I think they should have named the modern one something other than Falcon, because if I was going to spend about 3 grand on a White Falcon I'd want the big hollow body version, not the other one.

The players edition also comes in single cut. But what he did not mention was the volume pot has treble bleed and the tone pot is a no load. I have tried both and they are much more alike in the flesh.

I like them both, and it's good to have different models to choose from when searching. They both have their strong points. The tone switch option used in modern Gretschs is far more practical and usable than the old "mud switch" of yesteryear. On the otherhand, the double cut of the new Player's version is also a preferable design for those who may find the single cut body to be a bit too too big and unwieldy. Both models are nice, I'd be quite happy with either.

That was my thought and hesitation on the players. The thinner body and electronics must be producing a whole other tone from the original falcon. Maybe they should have just made the new Gretsch Eagle 🦅

The sound in this video is very poor. You are doing a shoot out of 2 guitars famous for their sound, both in excess of £2,000 and they sound like they are being played through a shoe box. What a shame you didn't play these through a full size amp. An AC30, Fender Twin, anything with some body basically. Nothing wrong with the cap doing the demo, his descriptions or the playing. But the sound here is just not doing justice to anything being played. You may even put people off buying either as neither sounds any good here.
