Granny Shows Us How To Make Her Famous Holy Smoke Cake

There's so many things that Granny makes that our family loves, but one of our favorites is Holy Smoke Cake. The dessert is fairly common and has several other names. It's always a special time here in the Appalachian Mountains when Granny makes a Holy Smoke Cake.

I'm on the brink of 72 in a couple of months myself. My grandma was also born in 1898, but died in 1969, when I was only 18. She wasn't a cook, but she was my safe place, too. I had a good family and didn't really need a safe person, per se, but there was just a bond there that settled my soul. I spent lots of time at her home in the summer, playing Parcheesi and watching her crochet. I loved her so much and think of her often.

My grandma was born in 1892 and passed away 1 year and 1 day before Elvis Presley (August 15, 1976, always helped me remember!). She became 84 years old, which was quite amazing, since she had diabetes, used insulin and was totally blind. If it wasn’t for her getting gangrene in her legs (and they didn’t do anything about it back then, so it developed and took her life), she would have become even older! Bless her, she was something special. Even blind she knitted and crocheted. She had 12 children, 9 lived up, as well as 3 step children (my grandpa was married to her cousin first, but she died and my grandma came to help him out with the children and ended out marrying him). All her children, including all the boys, were taught how to knit, crochet, embroider and sew. Some of the boys really loved this and kept using their skills their whole life, embroidering pictures and knitting clothes for kids and grandkids. I don’t remember her cooking and baking, that I have only been told about, as she all the time I can remember, was blind.

I just love your granny, she is so adorable. I laughed when she said "over yonder", I thought that was a stereotype of American's. She just has the sweetest accent. I am so glad that you guys are close, there is nothing like granny's, they are the best. My one granny passed when I was 8 and I still miss her. Please do some interviews of her, about the olden days, I would love to see those, like what she wore, what they ate, what they did for fun anything. I would literally watch her reading the newspaper, she is so interesting! Cake looks amazing as well. I have to try that!

I remember people saying 'over yonder' and 'up the road a piece' when I was small and we lived near the Appalachians for 4 years. When we moved back to a northern state, we didn't hear those phrases anymore.
