The problem I see with MoN at Villa was that he got a lot out of his first XI. But he never used a squad. Even in matches, he'd rarely make substitutions. He was the same at Leicester. Knew his best XI and never deviated from it.

Man City are only buying Declan Rice so that none of their rivals will get him ,the exact same thing happened with Calvin Phillips. Neither of them are going displace Rodri and for some people to say that man City need to replace Gundogan and that's why there trying to buy Declan Rice is a little silly because Gundogan was on the bench an awful lot and that's why he turned down City's new contract because it wasn't long enough and he was sitting on the bench more than he played. Man City with their Billions are in that position of being able to buy players that would strengthen their opponents teams and just put them on the bench, even with their 116 charges of breaching the financial fair play rules and the financial rules of the Premier League. They bought Grealish and didn't play him very much for a year until Raheim Sterling wanted a move and they knew all the rumours going around about man utd and Chelsea wanting Grealish, so they bought him and benched him and the exact same thing happened with Calvin Phillips, he was never going to get into the team ahead of Rodri but they knew man utd were desperate for a CDM and were lucky to get Casimero. Just look at City's bench and the strength in depth they have compared to everyone else and because they nearly lost the league to Arsenal, the last thing they want is to see arsenal strengthen their team because next season arsenal might be strong enough to actually follow through to the end with a Declan Rice etc. I understand that Declan Rice will back himself and think he'll get straight into man City's team but I don't think he will!!!

It's a team game at the end of the day, and you have to consider, when talking about Rice's ability to play 'cute' passes, whether there are enough players making 'cute' runs, or how much that behaviour is being encouraged and facilitated in the team by the manager/coaches. I see no reason why Rice can't appear to be better at these things once he is plonked into an environment like they have at City.

Souness was brutal. Always need a hard man in the middle and he fulfilled that role. Brilliant and skilful player and Scotland buzzed when he played but some of his tackles were outrageous. Watch them, none of that nuts about 'it looks worse in slow motion' over the top tackles on shins and knees are just that, - over the top tackles. Brilliant a player though he was he was filthy too,

Souness was an average product of his era, he wouldn't last four minutes in the modern game. 'Hard man in the middle' and 'thug that kicked people cause he couldn't keep up' are two very different things. Now he just makes stupid comments for the sake of controversy in a desperate attempt to convince the world that he's still somehow relevant.

Good, sure, as he had to be to make it at that level, but no better than an average player at that level. Martin O'Niel isn't exactly gonna sit there and say 'nah Souness was average' is he? He has to be nice and polite and civil. Call it a personal opinion or whatever, I just think he's remembered for being better than he actually was purely because he's still in the limelight at sky sports.

I can still remember Souness kicking Peter Nicholas on the head as they both lay on the ground in a Scotland-Wales international. He was a thug, and also a loudmouth. After Liverpool got a late equaliser against Man United in an FA Cup sem-final, he mouthed off "United have had their chance. They've blown it, and they know it". Small problem - United won the replay!

Sometimes, Souness has opinions that is so far off i don't think even he believes his own words. Does players have to be complete to be worth a premium? Sure Rice is nowhere near worth a crazy 100m when we hear Tonali is 70-80m, but Rice's role in a team is pretty clear. A CDM that has a role to play in the defensive part of the game. He doesn't need critical passing skills when he is surrounded by the type of players the clubs in question has. He would be surrounded by top playmakers at United, Arsenal and City so it's not an issue at all.

Souness' problem is he talks so much he doesn't have time to actually watch football. He's clearly not watched Rice play much since he first broke through at West Ham, and thinking he's the same player he was in 2018/19. Evolved massively, but pundits have an image of a player in their minds that seemingly can't be changed - if it drives clicks then every outlet will have on people with uninformed opinions just for the controversy

Yes but what if Bernardo leaves? Most of peps players can play 2/3/4 positions. Kovacic can and will play multiple roles. City go most of the way in most competitions now a days and they all will get game time. Only a few play every/most games. I think pep has realised this season a good back 3/4 and a couple of cdm’s stepping into midfield gets us over the line rather than getting left short at the back and getting hit on the break. I personally think rice is a little overrated but if pep wants him he will have a plan for him 100%

City's interest in Rice was always priced in by Arsenal (naive to assume otherwise), hence the lower offers in the beginning. As Arsenal creep up to the inevitable £100m fee, West Ham will feel they've negotiated well when in reality its kept the valuation ceiling much lower. City could still get him regardless (they're a financial behemoth and guarantee trophies), but right now it's Arsenal's transfer to lose.
