    Except he was wrong about the games he gave Rice. Rice played in a World Cup Qualifier against Turkey and 2 friendlies. The rules are that you can switch nations even after a full competitive cap if you were under 21/22 at the time. Rice deserves all the hate he gets and more. These players and their parents need to pick a country and stick with it.

    The real issue was the FAI's reliance on getting young British-born players into the Irish youth setups and hoping those players won't just revert back to their birth nation when they're mature enough to make their own choices. The focus really should be on improving the facilities for home grown players at schoolboy level. Typically, when it comes to homegrown players, Ireland has relied on English academies scouting the best young Irish players and bringing them over at 15/16 to develop but the academies in England are far more competitive than they've ever been with recruitment being global now. Young English players face the same competition at academies of course but the difference is that young English players are getting world class football education at schoolboy level, before they even get into club academies. The best Irish players are going to end up in England or Scotland so to give them the best opportunity to compete and succeed, they need to be given the tools to do so. That requires massive investment at underage level, from Under 8's to Under 14's so that when they are scouted by English academies they have the ability to compete. Unfortunately, the FAI is basically broke for various reasons that include corruption and incompetence.

  • @davidpryle3935

    @davidpryle3935

    Жыл бұрын

    Also throw in the fact that football is a minority sport in Ireland, with most people supporting sports that no other country plays. It’s difficult for the FAI to make a top class international football team magically appear from nowhere. It’s easy to see why they get drawn down the granny route.

If they never had any ambition to play for Ireland don’t pick them simple, Martin clearly knew they weren’t interested so don’t include them in the squads and give the places to proper Irishman who want to play for our country, it’s simple. 'I wouldnt have played him [in a competitive match]' like martin what?! Why did you bother playing him in place of someone else who wants to play for ireland long term? why invite them into the camp with no intent of them playing for ireland competitively, it really makes it sound like Ireland is a stepping stone for englands team and sure look go over there and get experience of international football. I agree with martins point that they are born in england; they feel english; they want to play for england, i understand that, but dont invite them into the ireland camp in that case. A complete mismanagement of a situation in my opinion.

    Let’s be honest footballers want to be internationals. Most English players can trace their heritage to other countries in UK and Ireland. So if they don’t get an England call up they’ll go elsewhere. Simple as that. It works the other way too. Ryan Giggs played for England at youth level….

    Grealish and Rice were different cases. Grealish never kicked a senior ball for Ireland, and in all honesty we knew we were never going to get him. Rice on the other hand did play for the senior team, so we were tearing our hair out over O'Neill not picking him for a competitive game and nailing him down. What I take from Martin here is that he knew that if he did pick Rice he wouldn't have played, and all that would have achieved would have been to shut the door completely.

Along with Keane,Neville and Souness would be my 4 top pundits .
