He's English, he just had an Irish grandmother. The lad might have been ambitious, but he probably didn't think he was going to be playing for England some day, so I can't blame him for initially deciding to play for Ireland where he could get some international game time and even be a star. He's a serious player and seems like a top lad, unfortunate from our Irish point of view, but most of us would have done the same in his shoes

Dude was saluting the IRA on twitter a few years ago. Believe it or not people have a far deeper affection for the country of their heritage and forefathers than they do for the country they happen to be born in. Even someone like Saka probably loves Nigeria more than England deep down and i speak as a 1st generation immigrant in this country. Alot of these players only use England for the opportunity of competing in world cups and gaining more exposure which would ultimately line up their pockets. You think Rice as a young child was cheering for England when they played against Ireland? Highly unlikely lol.

I can definitely sympathise with Rice having to pick between the two

Just think, some expert at the academy of Chelsea decided DR wasn't good enough and, fortunately for us, another expert at the academy of West Ham decided he was. Mick McCarthy said in 2018 that he would build the Ireland team around DR and make him its captain. Again, fortunately for us, DR decided differently. Changing the subject, did you know that Edge was born in Barking Maternity Hospital, the same one as me. His name is David Howell Evans and his parents are Welsh. The London-Ireland connection of DR brought this to my mind.

@@davidwalsh8241 there’s a reason why England is a multicultural nation in this modern era. England had colonial territories over many countries in Africa, Asia, Caribbean etc. England implemented Christianity and compulsory English academic teachings in most of those countries which also tweaked those country’s original culture. During the same time, the British stole cultural resources from the countries they ruled and made it their own. English people now have to accept individuals from other ancestral backgrounds in England because it was their fault for ruling these countries centuries ago in the first place. In this era, no matter your ethnic background, if you’re born and bred in the UK with a British passport. Then you are ENGLISH. Skin tone means nothing. Whether you’re black, Asian, Caribbean, Scandinavian it doesn’t matter as long as you were born and lived in the UK then your English. England is the most multicultural and diverse country in the world and no one can do anything about it. It’s how it meant to be.

A lot of comments here about international selection rules and the like. As an Englishman of Irish descent, I find it ridiculous that Rice ever played for Ireland but yes his conduct was equally silly. Firstly, I think that if you pull on the shirt and play then you are tied, friendly or not BUT I also think that to represent a nation you should need more than a granny's birth certificate. The international rules at present mean that you can play for a country you weren't born in, have never played in, haven't even lived in, don't speak the language of, have neither parent born in, nor theoretically have ever set foot in. It's a total joke.
