The question is who should the referees be accountable to? Because, when they make these calculated mistakes, they should not only apologize, but should be charged with a points deductible system that would eventually have them suspended and eventually banned. Teams lose crucial points from these errors that affect the results of the league, therefore a match replay would be the most appropriate solution. This premier league is the most corrupt to the bone, with referees ,var match officials and pundits all involved. There is a lot big bucks going around.

Martin has a lot of valid points here. Simon clearly dislikes Arteta's behavior and constantly kept interrupting and finding different ways to try and get Keown to admit that Arteta was wrong. He did not actually talk about the decisions that were made or about improving anything - technology or the process - as Keown was clearly trying to do. EDIT: I'm a Chelsea fan and don't have a particular affinity for Keown or Arteta. But let's call a spade, a spade. Simon is not really contributing materially to anything here; he's arguing for argument's sake. And Jim is literally trolling.

It seems you missed the point like keown did. Decisions are subjective and it will never be perfect because there are no ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ decisions. Its like disagreeing with how a critic has reviewed a movie. ‘You didnt like the godfather?? Well youre WRONG and need banning from being a critic!’ Let the referees referee and give them respect. At the end of the day (or season to be exact) the best team almost always wins the league, stop moaning FGS!

@@DanielS10291 appears that you're just going on about subjectivity like simon is, and completely missing the big picture... subjectivity can be reduced or confined by actually improving the process and/or technology.. there are things that can be eliminated from subjective interpretation by completely objective implementation.. that is how things improve and are made better.. for example, there was a time when there was no instant replay.. then those were added to broadcasts... then there was goal line technology.. now there is var.. each of these milestones eliminated aspects of subjectivity.. the question is what's next when it comes to continuous improvement.. that's a material discussion that simon refuses to engage in here because he can't see the forest through the trees...

What's clearly evident is that these former players still harbor bias based on rivalries from when they played no matter how objective they try to portray themselves to be. This alone is the reason why it would never work. What's needed is that there needs to be a point system for refereeing performances. This can possibly unearth good officials from the other divisions as well rather than have the same so called incompetent PL referees year after year

This already exists bro, and PGMOL sends refs emails a week before they officiate their next game showing them their points tally for decisions. Check out tifo football they explained. What's needed is diversity in refs across the whole footballing profession, now hear me out on this one. The leagues across Europe use refs from their respective countries. If we could have refs from other nations who are the best come over it would help a lot kinda like we do with footballers. Imagine if the leagues only featured players from their own countries. Being a ref is a tough job and requires a skill set many humans don't have. Notice that we have fewer errors in cross contentinatal competitions than in domestic leagues. There's a reason for that.

On top of that, other clubs are benefiting from their terrible decisions.

  • @ManUnited6380

you just answered your own stupid question - the club also needs to be penalized because they released a statement of support for a ridiculous lash out against referees claiming arsenal was cheated (implying the match is fixed and the league is somehow corrupted by the officials). high profile managers like arteta and klopp publicly bashing VAR "ONLY" when it goes against them week in and week out is the reason why the VAR can't be consistent because it encourages everyone in the industry to keep demanding something one week, and something different the week after. the reason why they shouldn't overstep their authority and bash the officials is not simply because officials deserve respect, it's because doing so rids the sport of integrity and trust. Once people lose trust in the rules and the system of the sport then you no longer have a properly functioning professional league.

The worst thing about the goal is the part nobody talks about: clear handball. Players, the on field ref and VAR all acknowledge a clear handball but they cant do anything because he’s not the goalscorer? THATS where the rules need changing and need to be put into question. Gotta get with the times and actually challenge some decisions or else the would never be any change.. and the game clearly needs change from wherever it is now. Last thing that was hilarious is them begging to stop talking about this topic like they aren’t getting the most interactions from it. This is what people come to listen to on this show because I guarantee NOBODY wants to hear any tactics from Simon or Jim.

Someone interrupted Martin’s morning yoga……. As an arsenal fan: should Arteta be charged for comments? Yeah probably. Was it a goal for Newcastle? Doesn’t matter. The games done. It could have been disallowed three times or it could have been given. Thems are the fine margins in football. Do when need technology to help someone come to a subjective opinion? No. VAR is deskilling the officials to the point at times it’s almost the infield officials and the VAR in direct opposition. VAR at this point should be limited to goal line technology and off the ball incidents. When it’s delivering at a one hundred percents effective capacity then expand its scope as opposed to throwing a technology shaped rock into the pond and having no idea what directions the waves are going to go. Even if VAR had a defining say: for example the game carries on and VAR spots a foul issues virtually a red or yellow card on behalf of on field official and at the next break in play it’s awarded on field. There are many example of how VAR could be used better instantly but it almost seems that the powers that be have taken the most awkward, difficult ridiculous path each and every time. Take time wasting and the 100 minute games. That can be ended almost completely almost immediately by simply allowing physios to come on (as in rugby) when a player goes down. When there’s no advantage to lying down on the grass and rolling down one’s sock for no reason and in fact becomes a serious disadvantage the players will stop. BUT instead of stopping time wasting we will just allow the time wasting to carry on and add more time on which the winning side tjme wastes anyway!!!!

As an Arsenal fan, I can agree the ball was not out of play, the possible offside was difficult to call and I can understand the decision made for that, but how can that not be a foul on Gabriel? I've also noticed a lack of discussion about Havertz' tackle and the arm to Jorginho. Both red card incidents that again the ref's and VAR failed to deal with.

u've missed the point on the foul.... its the type of foul that maybe 60-70% of ref would give in real time... but not all. u've seen that from the punditry after that it's split on that decision. therefore if the ref saw it in real time and didn't deem it a foul... is it a clear and obvious error? to which the answers is no. so ultimately tho the decision feels harsh it is actually the right one following protocols. however that whole goal is a complex and difficult decision what I don't get is why arsenal fans are fixate on that decision which is a tough subject one and not on the Bruno g. one? that 1 is a clear red card and I still don't understand to this day how it wasn't

It’s lack of consistency as Keown states VAR needs to be better. Apparently the pressure of Joelinton’s 2 hands on Gabriel wasn’t enough for a foul so how was one hand of Ramus Hojlund on Rodri enough to force Rodri to turn 360 degrees and then fall to the ground so a penalty was awarded. Subjective…..

The ex players for VAR is such a stupid idea. 1. So many ex pros disagreed on these decisions. 2. If they're anything like Dion Dublin (Commentary for England vs Malta last night) then they don't even know or understand the laws of the game! 3. Refs don't "Understand the game"? Well players don't "Understand" Refereeing! Same argument would apply! 4. They would still be held back by the "Clear and Obvious" wording. I find it hilarious that some average supporter thinks a bloke whose profession is officiating a sport hasn't played the game or has a far poorer understanding of it than they do because they played football at lunchtimes in school when they were twelve.

And when you talk about bias you enter conspiracy land where the system is out to get a team for no apparent reason.

Keown is 100% correct on the foul. It was blatant. The idea it was a subjective is a nonsense excuse. No reason for defender to go down if he isnt pushed. Keown also right about using better technology. Both the potential offside and the ball in/out of play should be possible to identify. Makes no sense that they did not draw lines as they are happy to use that for offside calls like they did for the disallowed Arsenal goal vs Brentford. I think it was actually in play though but it should have been possible to confirm.

  • @mick2nv

Just get rid of VAR! 1. These meltdowns were barely happening pre VAR in comparison to today. 2. It’s slowed the game down dramatically (watch an old PL classic and tell me the game didn’t flow better). 3. If a trained linesman does not see any advantage with their trained eyes, I’m sorry a fractional offside should benefit the attacker. 4. To my point above, the same goes with a defender tackle in the box. If it’s not clear that contact was made on the player/ball (and again is marginal) benefit should go to defender. 5. Football is a human game, played by humans, for humans who should be reffed by humans. And ALL humans make mistakes, refs included. Conclusion: keep goal line technology, add to all boundaries of the field as there is no subjectivity. Pay refs a lot more money to attract the best and ramp up the training regime from top to bottom.

What respect is Jordan talking about? People need to put some context into Arteta's implosion because it isnt down to Newcaslte's goal alone... it was an accumulation of what happen not only in other games this season, but also last season. At the end of January last season, a SkySports article that analyzed many wrong decision gone against Arsenal, argue that Arsenal had potentially lost 11 point unfairly... someone could argue that it may even cost Arsenal the title. Any club suffering from 3 official PGMOL apologies costing them 11 points, and then have Newcastle's goal allowed, would have imploded much much earlier... enough is enough!
