Gouache Techniques & Textures: Replicating Mary Blair Alice In Wonderland Concept Art

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's my birthday!!! And to celebrate I chose to replicated a magical piece of concept art that I really love. This nocturnal scene shows Alice entering the mushroom garden where she meets the Caterpillar. It's a strange and exciting moment, kind of like any birthday after the age of 40. Being in my 40s is strange because every year I feel more like I did when I was a small child, filled with wonder and excitement about life... but then there's the aging part! lol
Annnyway, this replicant video is flawed in that I tried to record it in 4K which, I think, is why the camera kept focusing on my hand and not the painting. SORRY! I switched back to HD for the last few segments. I will figure this all out before the next video. If you have any advice, please let me know!
In this video I focus on textures and colour mixing, elements that people have been requesting, so I hope I explain these details in a helpful manner. Enjoy!
Materials Used:
*Acrylic gouache: Primary Red, Primary Magenta, Cyan, Ultramarine, Primary Yellow, Yellow, Black, China White
*Watercolour brushes in various sizes (sm. medium. and a large angle)
*Illustration board
*Washi tape
*Water and paper towel
*Reference image: Concept art made by Mary Blair, from Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951)

It’s perfectly yours💙very well done. Appreciate the difficulty of working so small, as Mary did often; true to size. Happy to see your confidence and craft shone through🍄

Thank you so much! I love working small... I always have. Not sure why, other than it's cheap lol! I guess I like getting lost in little worlds 😌

Happy belated birthday. Ot maybe I should say, “A very merry unbirthday to you”. I think I’m seeing that in some videos you are using regular gouache and in others acrylic gouache. For those of us watching, not only to appreciate the original art and your wonderful copies but also to learn the painting process it might be helpful to give that information at he start.

Thank you! Very merry unbirthday to you too! And yes, occasionally I will break out the regular gouache but in this video, I believe, it's all acrylic. I usually explain the difference in the videos but I may have forgotten in this one. Thank you for mentioning it! I'll remember to explain it in each video cause it's an important distinction to make. I really appreciate your encouragement and comment :)

Thank you so much! I love that you feel more curious about trying your gouache! It really is a fun medium. Some people catch on right away, while other people have a harder time, but I think it's worth pushing through if you find it challenging the first time. Play around! Let me know if you have any questions :) I'll help if I can!

Yay new video. I love these. You should do Ralph Hulett too or if you want a curve-ball, look up Genndy Tartakovsky's character concept art. Or just stick with Eyvind Earle and Mary Blair, because I could watch these forever heh. Happy birthday!

I love that you love these! And I LOVE Ralph Hulett! I'll try him next, thanks for the suggestion. Annnnd I actually did a Samurai Jack painting for an old boyfriend! It was the second "replicant" I ever painted... waaaay before KZread. I'm a huge fan. After Ralph I'll do a Tartakovsky :) You watch them forever and I'll make them forever ;)
