Gouache, Watercolour & Inking: Replicating Mary Blair Concept Art from Alice In Wonderland

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! This video is dedicated to my Mum, who is one of the most creative and imaginative people I know, and who I love a lot. We are spending Valentine's together this year and I'm grateful :)
I chose this piece of concept art (by Mary Blair of course) that has a more gestural, inked background, so some new techniques to share!
Here is a more straight forward description of my process and a list of my supplies:
1. Using watercolour paper for the "canvas" I quickly block out where my main shapes are before applying a wash of watered down black watercolour to the sky.
2. When the sky is almost completely dry, I start to add another wash to where the darker foliage is. With watercolour, you always start light and apply a tonal value range as you go.... lightest to darkest, with your page acting as the highlights (if you're using lighted coloured paper)
3. I then use a black, fine tipped, water proof ink pen to "ink" in gestural marks for the foliage. I use the original art as inspiration for the size and style of mark. Quick and confident lines, inking with a distinct, consistent gesture for each element.
4. I then block in (the outlines) of the characters to make sure my proportions are correct.
5. When painting with gouache, remember to water down your paint a little at a time until it's a nice, creamy consistency that is easy to apply. You don't want resistance, unless you are doing a dry brush effect.
6. Allow each coat to dry before applying a second coat.

Watercolour paper (cold press)
Washi tape to mask
Watercolour brush size #6
Black watercolour paint
Acrylic gouache: red, yellow, ultra marine, viridian, black, white

For valentine's earlier, since my partner and I both hate commercial holidays, I said I'd make it like Alice in Wonderland's unbirthdays, and celebrate our love the other 364 days of the year :D Thanks for the lovely painting and enjoy with your mom!

This tutorial is awesome! I have rarely seen Mary do this ink + paint hybrid so this was great to see it unfold before my non-Lasik-treated eyes. I'm still afraid of creating diminished colors using complements so thanks for making it seem a little less scary. Beautiful work! Hope you're having the best Valentine's ever with your mama

Thanks Gina! But why you gotta brag about your non-lasik-treated eyes?! jkjkjkjk... and I actually DID have the best Valentine's with my mama. I made her laugh so hard she peed her pants, so that was an accomplishment.
