ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this KZread journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

As someone who always struggles with water control, this was such a big help! I got a question, does the type of paper (e.g. cold/hot press) make a difference at all?
@Pointebrush
4 ай бұрын
Happy it was helpful! To answer your question, YES the type of paper does make a difference. Cold press paper tends to be much more forgiving for water control because it stays moist for longer therefore allowing the pigments to settle. Hot press is flat, smooth and faster drying which makes it more more challenging. This is why a lot of people hate it but in my opinion, it's a very misunderstood paper. Both are wonderful in their own way. You just have to be more skilled with hot press. It won't let you get away with sloppiness which makes it an excellent paper to practice your water control on 😉

@@Pointebrush That's good to know! I love using hot press, the faster drying time is invaluable to an impatient creature like me haha

This video is the best water management explanation for watercolours I have seen. Your analogies are great. Margot, you did a fantastic job, and I admire the hard work and dedication you put into your video content.

@@PointebrushYou are well on your way! 💕💕💕
*Most important point that cannot be stressed enough*: let your paper dry. After two years of progressing fairly well, my impulsive nature still compels me to begin tinkering before the paper is completely dry. It HAS forced me to become quite good at repairs. A dab hand, you might say. Patience is the key.
You are a delight to watch! Clear, illustrated principles delivered with. A sense of humor + personal vulnerability. One of the best approaches I have experienced! Thank you!
After years of trying to learn watercolor via KZread, my painting really turned a corner after watching this!! Thank you so much!!
I’ve never heard water management explained this way. It was eye opening! Thank you. I really enjoy your vlogs! ❤
I can't believe this never occurred to me. Thank you so much Margot! BTW, I love the way you create a "show" with your videos.

Thank you Margot, you are a star ⭐️ I think you are the best teacher I have come across I appreciate your time so much ❤
Sometimes, it's the images that stick with you when you learn something new...and those little boats on the water? Brilliant! Not to mention the arcade game. Kids and their lives are great inspiration, aren't they.
I literally poured myself a cup of tea to watch this because I look forward to each of your videos

I'm honored. And doubly so for being tea worthy too 😘
The production on this video… incredible!
This was such a great way to explain this! I had the hardest time getting this when I started painting. I love your blend of story telling with instructional video. It’s so engaging and easy to follow. You’re such s great teacher!
Gosh, this is such a fundamental NO DUH makes-sense explanation, I am so glad I just subscribed to your channel last week. I cannot tell you how many watercolor classes I've taken and YT videos I've watched over the years and finally gave up on watercolor painting, as I could never control the medium. Not once did I ever hear anyone offer these "why it acts that way" explanations, else maybe I'd have had a completely different experience. What a great teacher you are, I look forward to watching your channel as I try getting back into art-making this year! Thanks for the "why it works," now I kinda get it. DUH.
Once again, a tricky concept made simple to understand in a hugely entertaining fashion and always demonstrated with kindness and the delighted air of "passing over" knowledge. You're a real gem Margot.
I love that you actually teach. I saw a video about flowers centers and it solved a huge problem for me. I can draw a flower now.
Just. Wow. Its so simple, yet no one until now has explained this so well! Thank you 😊 i love your channel ❤️

Hullo Margot, I saw your poll but did not weigh in as I was going to watch no matter what picture you used for the thumbnail. I am just not good at those choices either. I do enjoy watching others teaching simple techniques that are not easy to complete! I felt that you did a wonderful job getting this concept across to your viewers. Watercolor is the most difficult medium simply because of the planning that must be done to eliminate surprises! Planning out a painting is hard! Most people just don’t want to do it. This is another reason why masking fluid is so hard to use, it MUST BE planned out before you even start! You can make surprises work for you in your painting or you can throw your hands up in despair. Thank you for sharing your time and effort with us and explaining water flow in an easy to understand way. Have a lovely day!
Thank you! Being from the Netherlands I should master the water.... but watercolour is a totaly different cup of tea💗

Margot - I have to say, I hang on your every word. I think your style is impeccable and your easy, concise way of explaining and teaching just wonderful. I also am doing my best to learn from your experience. As an “okay” painter - I find your easy way of teaching so very enjoyable and hope to move to the next level from being “okay” to “decent” as time (and your helpful advice - ie Videos) continue!!! PS - I have also spent far too much on watercolor paints from your reccs! LOL. ❤
One of the best ways to control water is never to blot your brush. Instead, remove water by pullng it out of the back of the brush with a paper towel. No loss of paint and easy to control.
This made so much sense! Water Shepherding should be on your resume!
This was very helpful. Explain it to me like I’m a four year old! Seriously, that’s how it should be done!
Oh Margot - you are SO creative. Great video content delivered in such a fun way. You would make a dynamite school teacher especially with younger children. I'm not suggesting a career change because it's evident you love what you do and do it well. Good for you to recognize you needed professional help with the postpartum depression.
I just love the way you teach Margot. You are so good at explaining things. I love your content
I love your work and creativity! This video is so informative and fun and I can’t wait to apply your information when I’m painting. The references while demonstrating helped make more sense - I appreciate you! PS. Enjoyed watching your adult ballerina videos - they inspired me to use the 13 year parental investment in dance classes to go back into the studio at 53 to teach Jazz at our local community theatre. Thank you 💜
Great tips in a fun way and yes, I've never seen a backrun in a waterfall. 😅
Interesting tools. I have honestly never thought about moving that drop of paint in one direction. I might be doing it anyway without thinking about it but whether I have been doing it before now or not I will make a conscious effort to do it that way. I already wait for the first layer to dry completely before adding another but I am surprised to see so many people just add another wet layer on top of a still wet layer. Good point for those who don’t do this. I enjoy watching your videos. I learn something most every time. Plus I like seeing your work. Very well done.
I really enjoy your art technique videos! They’re fun to watch and you have some great tips. Thank you for another great video!
I loved this video! I would love a similar one about loading the brush. The unsaid things in beginner videos are very frustrating, but more importantly the super simple art these tutorials use make it had for my neurospicy brain to tune in when the explanations are also bland and nonspecific.
Three video's in and I am smitten ❤❤
A very helpful tutorial while being so entertaining! Your creativity is so refreshing. I learn from you while being amused. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us in an entertaining format.❤
Euraka. An Australian term you shout when you have struck gold. I always enjoy your content and humor but this video is gold to me.
Thank you so much Margot!!! You are a wonderful teacher and inspiration 🎨 🖼
Once again you have explained a concept in a way it makes sense. I watch A LOT of videos and no one has really explained it like that and related how to trouble shoot these weird water stains that mysterily appear. I recently bought hot press to try my hand at some florals,( I heard that it is a good paper for florals). I practiced on a page and was so suprised at how quickly it dried and got these weird hard lines. I'm going too keep at it, onward!

I’m glad the video was helpful! Hot press is the hardest to manage for sure so you’re not alone in finding it difficult. Give these tips a shot and don’t give up! Hot press is the ultimate gauntlet that forges greatness 😉🤣
What a captivating visual presentation! I found it simultaneously stimulating and enlightening. I ardently anticipate the perpetuation of your creative endeavors in this vein. Admirable work, indeed!
Loved that teaching approach, I feel like I’ll be able to remember it easily next time I pull out my paints
So clever! I like your demo with water directionality! I hadn’t ever really thought about that. Thanks!
Holy moly….this video was a haha moment. You are the best teacher ever…You are clear, to the point with great demonstrations and easy to understand. You go slow and easy. Thank you so much…wow. I’m still amazed.! 🥰👏👏👏👏👏

Margot thank you. I have probably watched thousands of youtube watercolor videos over the last couple of years as someone new to watercolor, and not once has any youtube artist taught this simple fact about water control and how to prevent blooms. Kudos 🎊. You are fast becoming my new watercolor "secret weapon". Now if I can just figure out how to paint those darn ballerinas!😅

You are a delight. Your video production is amazing and you impart so much wisdom…I only you wish you were an oil painter because that’s my primary medium. Still, I try to extrapolate some of your ideas to oil. If you have any videos that you think would be helpful to an oil painter, I’d be grateful to hear about them.
