My entire family is Christian, and every single one of my relatives are. I was brought up in the church and heavily involved in it. I was in Awana for 5 years, I was in a Christian Rockabilly club and Bible Study, I went to Christian Summer Camp, and was even a Counselor. I became "saved" at the 1996 Harvest Crusade in Anaheim. It was only 5 years ago when I was around 25 years old when I became an Atheist, because I could no longer deny rational thinking, and came clean with my true feelings

I have always had doubts even as a child. I just couldn't understand the Bible at all. It confused me more, but all I heard was, "you have to believe and have faith". I couldn't believe in something I couldn't understand, so I just kept quiet and observed. I have had many discussions with family about God's purpose and His will. I lost my first child in 1979, and many told me, that was God's will, and that perhaps God was sparing me for a worse hardship. What can possibly be worse than losing your baby at birth? That's when I totally turned away from religious lunatics and trying to understand the Bible. I don't want to totally dismiss a higher power because as a child we have been scared to fear God and the Devil. I can't say I believe in either one. There is a lot of good in people, and I have seen a lot of evil in people. I know who the good people are...I am one of them, and if that's not good enough...so be it.

Thank you for this! I was one of those souls who went “oops, I was wrong” and willingly faced the wrath of public scorn and persecution for being so vocal about leaving a fundamental religion (that was my entire life) and proclaiming my atheism. One of the most difficult times of my life, but also empowering as I came out on the other side intact. I hope in my small little insignificant area of the world I can make it just a little easier for someone else to come out. The more of us who do, the smoother of a path we can forge for others to come. It’s not just big celebrities, but those around us we know that contribute. I’m so grateful for Daniel Dennett and those like him.

No, it's stoo-pid. Richard Dawkins teaches the universe came from "literally nothing." Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God. This was wonderful. I've never seen another of these atheist talks that probed so deeply and honestly into the human nature and social fears and impulses that serve to maintain a collective belief. The distinction between a belief in God and a belief in belief of God is an illuminating observation. Finally, it's a treat to see someone deliver a brilliant, devastating examination of supernatural belief without bitterness but a genuine compassion for believers. Count me as a fan of Dan Dennett!

This is the video that I can relate the most to by far. I am an example of the 1st and 2nd kind of silent atheist as explained by Den Denett. My situation is that of fear of a collapse in stability. Majority of my family are greatly religious, and most if not all of their social relationships depend on their religion. As seeing as blissful as they are now, I just can't bring myself to shove the facts down their throat, saying:"Look, you guys are either ignorant or delusional!".

Uh, Alex, you have to have a more rational approach to your religious family and wider community than the violence you want to inflict on them. How to rescue them from this sucking mire of ignorance, superstition parading as religiousity, rigidity masquerading as faith, and fear translated into violence? You have a formidable job ahead of you, virtually a great wall of China to scale and climb over, a ponderous rock to roll back up the hill, so what to do? Nothing! That s right, nothing! Like Jesus said, Let the dead bury their dead. For now, anyway. It s not their time to wake up yet. There is a set time for everyone. Jesus also said, I have come that you may have life, and have it abundantly. Go, therefore, and enjoy your life to the fullest and never look back. Cuz Jesus also said, if you keep looking back, you ll never see the kingdom of God.

There are both dolts. God is the reason for us and all we have. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJ2B09yHj7y5iLg.html “However improbable the origin of life might be, we know it happened on Earth because we are here.” -Richard Dawkins. There is a thread on here that I joined in briefly but ran from because it falls into a trap that Dan Dennett illustrates perfectly at around 16:50 onwards. We can enter into very convoluted and nebulous discussions about religion that bizarrely sidestep the central issue about the very existence of god. This seems to happen all the time and we get drawn in. I don't believe a god exists so then having a discussion about his nature and character is nonsensical: like discussing socialism in the goblin community or feminist issues for dragons. This is a problem of conversational embarrassment when talking to the religious because it takes me to a point where I think I can only point out that the person I am engaged in conversation with is frankly deluded. Their assumption of a god is seemingly second nature to them but not to me, so it rapidly turns into an experience akin to talking to someone who believes in Santa Claus or that Elvis is still alive. It becomes almost impossible to carry on a discourse with someone making 'serious' points about their imaginary friend without pointing this out to them. I don't really feel very comfortable doing this so I tend to disengage. I don't always do this; young earth creationists are fair game for attack in my book as they are wilfully idiotic and want their lies to be taught in schools in parts of the U.S. That of course makes them dangerous. It's one thing to have a personal belief that we shared the same era as dinosaurs and quite another to dumb down the next generation.

So then, a mind capable of creating this world, life etc. ,must be an extra-ordinarily complex being....and therefore (under your own assertion), must have required a designer also....?? Appealing to the 'god of the gaps' is lazy thinking (so often used by the ignorant and delusional). The problem with apologists and the like, is that they always view everything from the top down...and this never leads to successful answers about reality because we now know, life arose in fact, from the bottom up, (which fits perfectly with all scientific observation) . There are no gods, they are man made inventions ..this is overwhelmingly obvious.

@@rebanx1 I've been wondering about this very thing for sometime now. You said "...because we now know, life arose in fact, from the bottom up, (which fits perfectly with all scientific observation) ." What exactly was or has been observed scientifically that demonstrates life arose in an evolutionary manner? I was under the impression that life arose so slowly that it can't actually be observed. And therefore no real "observable scientific" evidence can be offered. Love if you could give me an example or two where it was observed that life arose from non-life or even one kind of animal into a completely new one? Be helpful, thanks.

No Way Interesting. You could look at the way Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris have been tussling about the consciousness and free will issue lately -- they are in deep disagreement, and have been exchanging salvos in the form of book review and response essay. And to be honest, the exchange is not remotely friendly, although it is civil (mostly) in tone. The veneer, at least, however, is by academically honest mutual invitation to refute, and nobody has come close to shooting anybody yet, or even threatening. The really wholesome aspect to all of this is that two of the Horsemen can have a substantive disagreement, vent it thoroughly in public forum, and remain Horsemen and probably friends. Most religionists would have been splitting into mutually abusive factions around their gurus by now.

manthasagittarius1 That is interesting. And perhaps worth figuring out why this sort of exchange should actually be encouraged. Perhaps it is because the use of force or coercion to silence one or the other wouldn't change any of the actual truths or the objective facts which they both seek to understand. Both go into this assuming that neither of them have an absolute truth. But both go into this willing to be wrong for the sake of actually getting it right. Both go into this assuming that this is a matter for debate, however, not a matter of opinion and yet, any Joe or Jane with a brain could develop a better model at any time. You're right about religions. The doctrines they have are assumed absolute truths. They are unchangeable. Personal opinions are not heard. If they are heard then those whose views differ must branch off as another religion if they're lucky enough to avoid being silenced. In another sense, if opinions are coddled, then nobody can know if they are close to any objective truths or not. Some people like Popes, Bishops and priests are assumed to have higher knowledge than yourself so you confess and submit to them. It is a taboo to question authority and especially taboo to prove them wrong or point out their mistakes.

The major religious factions have an agenda which is to force the rest of us to live OUR lives according to THEIR beliefs, fuck that! They make various claims about what is moral and if we don't hate gays or, praise jesus or, allah or what ever the case may be, we are wicked and evil and so on. Religious speak out on topics such as gay marriage, abortion and many other things. Religions DO NOT support freedom of choice, how can they? There is one GOD and one true religion, everyone that disagrees is going to hell, in some cases, sooner rather than later and they want the law to enforce religious doctrine on EVERYONE. No one is saying that people should not be allowed to believe what they like, how can you stop them? Religions are NOT silent about their beliefs and the idea that those who do not believe should simply shut up and let them preach their ideologies unchallenged is nonsense, of course we should and we have every right to do so.

sauniz1 Rather than addressing "why wouldn't it?" I shall address "Why doesn't it?" It doesn't because of the last statement you made, with the discrepant word capitalized. ..."so that mankind might be saved from his HATE through his love!" This doesn't represent any Christian belief nor the resolution of the ransom theory which you later presented in the statement to which I now respond to. This is the view:* God doesn't operate in hate but in love. His purpose was established before creation. He left dominion of earth to mankind through His influence so that His purpose may be expressed on earth through mankind. Mankind lost the influence of God and became blind to His purpose. God reunited man unto himself through Jesus Christ... Now that is a summary of the story

Bullsh... - The truth about many things keeps changing because science keeps learning! Only those who refuse to learn because they have been successful in selling the same humdrum, - they stick to the same lies. (Not even that: Look at all the Jesus-sects for example. They disagree in so many respects! Some of them have even discarded hell and the devil...)

Atheist Bible, Genesis of Atheism The Beginning 1 In the beginning Nothing created the nothing and the nothing.2 Now the nothing was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the nothing, and the nothing hovering over the nothing. 3 And nothing said, “Let there be nothing,” and there was nothing. 4 Nothing saw that the nothing was good, and it separated the nothing from the darkness of nothing. 5 Nothing called the nothing, and the Nothing called nothing. And there was no evening, and there was no morning-the first day never came. 6 And Nothing said, “Let there be nothing between the nothing to separate nothing from nothing.” 7 So nothing made the nothing and separated the nothing under the nothing from the nothing above it. And it was so. 8 Nothing called the Nothing “nothing.” And there was no evening, and there was no morning-the second day never came. 9 And nothing said, “Let the nothing under the nothing be gathered to no place, and let no dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 Nothing called the dry ground “land nothing,” and the gathered nothing he called “no seas.” And nothing saw that it was good

Yeah seems quite legit because Atheism surely needs a bible. Speaking an universe into existence is really the best answer to the origin of life. Why don't we stop researching on everything and just study the bible since everything science has to offer are only theories. God the allmighty will lead us wouldn't that be wonderful :D

deathchaos21 Atheist don't need Bible but they need healthy brain to think. Science is OK and temporary. Scientific technology and and its theory changes all the time. Some thing which we have today will be change in future. But desire of man never changes. Desire of Peace, Love, compassion, rest were always in human soul and will remain in human soul as long as he is alive on earth. God is not a Science but a need to satisfy our fearful soul, guilt, desire, rest. Without God we can go to moon but can not get peace, joy and rest in our soul. Be little more wise.

I don't think everyone needs god to be good. Since i was born i was never able to believe. I were in church every Sunday and were taught about the bible. Even as an Atheist I know the bible very well. I would never tell someone that his believe is wrong since I don't know if god exists. Our mind is really limited I don't think that science knows every thing but I believe we are on a good way to understand the universe and maybe its origin

deathchaos21 Just read without anger, without hate God and without keeping religion in your mind. Other wise its just nonsense long comment and wastage of time. Please give yourself some time. You need life and truth. Now here is response to your comment. No Sir, you don't need God to be good. In fact God created every thing good first in place. But question is, from where evil came in our world and in us. If you start to teach a Child lies and truth, stealing and honesty, hate and love, to be kind hearten and selfishness simultaneously and do not reveal him/her the difference or consequences of evil, he/she will start to learn lies, stealing, hate, anger, selfishness etc more faster than all good which you taught him/her. Sir you need God not to become a "good man" but to become a "new man" who even don't know what is lies, stealing, hate, evil etc. But such new birth of man is not possible from same seed which already producing man of evil knowledge. Adam was a first man started to producing us. Jesus is the second Man producing a new Man from Him. There is only one option for birth of such man. And that is present death of old man and born again from incorruptible seed of other Father. Here is the Point, Birth of Jesus without earthly father denoting His incorruptibly nature, His death on cross behalf of earthly human denoting death of our corruptible body, His resurrection from death is future hope of our new birth from His incorruptible seed. We all born with knowledge of evil that is why we know evil and do not remain innocent. But good news is that if we accept our sin and evil and believe in Jesus Christ that He dies in our place and rose again to give us new birth from His seed, then we will be forgiven, will raise from dead some day and will come back in the Kingdom of God. And if we will dig earth in the Kingdom of God we will found atheist bone in fossil form as we are getting fossils of dinosaur's today. Earth will be old but creation on it will be new. Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about your Sin, His forgiveness, and Kingdom of God in future. Its not a religion but life, death and again life in new world. If you think scientifically, present creation going to be an end, new creation will raise again as old creation of dinosaur's time was end and new creation of our time rose. Now time has come for an end of our time creation and new creation called Kingdom of God will come in future very soon. God is inviting you in His Kingdom through Cross of Christ. But first you have to die on cross by believing in death of Christ so in future you may raise again for His Kingdom. Its not rocket science nor religion but life cycle which are occurring since beginning when God created the world and universe. Beginning could be millions of years before but creation always changes and came to an end. Dinosaur's time period came and gone, same way our age and time period will also an end sooner or later. Just think about it, without religion.

@@JoshFlorii there are sooooo many ways I could make a long list, but here are a few. God is the reason for us and all we have. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJ2B09yHj7y5iLg.html “However improbable the origin of life might be, we know it happened on Earth because we are here.” -Richard Dawkins. We only get life from life...the law of biogenesis. We can't get anything without God. The odds are NOT there. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWWTraePkabfkaQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4ttycOwqr2yo84.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpiV07WupNebkdo.html No, the eye did not evolve into various eyes. Your mere chance mutations are absurd. kzread.info/dash/bejne/imuclKqQk7fdkZc.html Even Dawkins admits we can't know what is true because of natural selection... The God Delusion, “Since we are creatures of natural selection, we cannot totally trust our senses. Evolution only passes on traits that help a species survive, and not with preserving traits that tell a species what is actually true about life.” Oh, but Dawkins knows what's true about life...killing those who don't meet his expectations for living. dailycaller.com/2021/05/19/richard-dawkins-down-syndrome-roe-v-wade/

You're correct in the sense that Tolkien wouldn't put that kind of story into his works, but he's a single author specifically crafting a work of fiction. Noah, on the other hand, was a story built up over time by many authors. Floods would have been disastrous in the stone age, and so one crazy man that happened to have a boat, and was able to save all his cattle would be legendary. Over time this would get embellished. It's really no different than the legend of Hercules et all.
