Professor Peter Millican | God does NOT exist

Professor Peter Millican gives his argument against the existence of God.

Oxford Union Website @ www.oxford-union.org/
Professor Peter Millican opens by saying he had hoped to find good reasons to believe in God by gave up looking. He says that some people need evidence for their beliefs and that he is one of these people.
The theistic hypothesis claims there is an immaterial God who's thought process can act freely of a physical body and that our thinking self can continue without our thinking brains. The human brain has been growing larger as we've evolved as a species and our heads are very large as new-born's making it dangerous for mothers during childbirth, surely if we are to go on thinking after we die we wouldn't need this evolutionary process.
He proceeds to say that every religion has a moral code but this is not surprising as humans are universally moral beings. We are moral because we are a weak species and the only way we can survive is by cooperation in society and we need a morality to be able to do that.

    "It is only at the semantic level that we really have meaningful information; thus, we may establish the following theorem: Theorem 14: Any entity, to be accepted as information, must entail semantics; it must be meaningful. Semantics is an essential aspect of information because the meaning is the only invariant property. The statistical and syntactical properties can be altered appreciably when information is represented in another language (e.g., translated into Chinese), but the meaning does not change. Meanings always represent mental concepts; therefore, we have: Theorem 15: When its progress along the chain of transmission events is traced backward, every piece of information leads to a mental source, the mind of the sender." The need to convince people is just the subconscious hope that if other people agree with you there’s a better chance that you are right. But to tell people that for a fact God does not exist at all because you just know so much is actually more bizarre than saying he does. God doesn’t want religion he only wants your LOVE ❤️ if you were staring death in the face and there were no others to convince , would you still believe it yourself that there is no God? Or would the fear of what’s after death be enough for you to realize that the feeling of Love that is a universal human language is in fact from GOD

    you should watch the debates of Dr Ed Feser and Dr William Lane Craig about God in which they debate against atheists and although the videos are long and advanced it's worth it; they change many opinions and prejudices that atheists and agnostics have about Theism, with those debates I realized that the defense of God is much stronger, rational and deeper than even I believed. They show how it’s totally possible to be rational, analitic and at the same time defending God's existence. And the reason why specifically the Christian religion would be the true one is because of the resurrection which is almost a historical fact, you can watch debates about it and see how the defense of the resurrection of Jesus is rationally strong.

    ***** I’m not worried about that; I’m worry about what theists are doing to our kid’s education. In 800 AD the intellectual center of the world was Bagdad. All the advances in engineering, biology, medicine, mathematics was there. Our numerals are called Arabic numerals. Arabs invented Algebra, Algorithms is an Arabic name, etc. They were advanced in astronomy, 2/3 of the stars have Arabic names. But something happens in the XII century, science was replaced by revelation and religion stupidity, this people leaders in science, nº 1 in science are now on the bottom of the list, and they haven’t recover since. This is what religion does. In the 50s, a new leader in science was born, the united states of America, now the leadership is threaten by the same religion stupidity, if we don’t do something we are going to go back to the 19th century, we are heading to the bottom of the list thanks to religious beliefs. That is why people like Laurence Krauss, Neil deGrasse Tyson and many other bright science are fighting against theism. That is why religious people don’t understand the arguments of Atheists; they have a very narrow view. Another thing that religious people tend to do is lie, and believe their own lies: You said that there where more atheist in that debate, how do you know that? Perhaps revelation? The debate divides the house in two, one side for the motion and the other against. If one side of the house won is because people in the other side vote for their motion. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ IS the Proof of His Sonship of God the Father... It was Prophecied many times in the Old Testament that He would die and rise again... Jesus Himself, told His disciples 5 times, that He would rise again after 3 days... When this came to pass accurately, He showed Himself alive to over 90 people... Even Thomas one of His disciples, didn't believe He would rise again.. But, when Thomas saw Him, he fell down and worshipped Him... The Resurrection is an established fact of truth...

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Jubei Yang "How do you know that it is evidence when you have not seen?" I see a tree bending, leaves fluttering. That is the visible evidence of unseen wind blowing. It really is just that simple. The idea is that you probably do not see God, but you can see the *effects* of God. The problem of course is discerning God. For instance, someone might have a string tied to the tree making it move and flutter, and it wasn't the wind. Sometimes the *evidence* isn't entirely conclusive. In this context, one *hopes* for salvation or eternal life or even just a bit of happiness in this life, and the hope is sustained by some evidence which everyone can see but which you interpret as signifying the existence of God.

  • @thomasmaughan4798

    @thomasmaughan4798

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Jubei Yang "Are you that stupid?" *NO* (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteridge%27s_law_of_headlines ). Now if you were to quantify exactly what level of stupidity you mean I could give you a more nuanced answer. "you see the effects of the wind so the same applies to God?" yes, that is precisely so. At least you understand the analogy. You cannot see gravity, only its effects. You cannot see electricity, only its effects. You can see only a relatively narrow range of wavelengths, 400 to 600 nanometers (more or less) all other wavelengths are invisible to your eyes and senses but you can see their effects. Wind is moving air, its effect is manifest only when something *resists* the moving air and as a result energy is transferred from air to object, or in the case of a fan or blower, from object to air. So it is that God can presumably both accept and source energy; but how you *interpret* that energy is unpredictable to me. At any rate, it should be obvious that it is impossible to say that this is not so, that there is no God; for you have little or no idea what is the nature of that interaction, and if God chooses to not interact with you, then for you he does not exist or might as well not exist.

  • @thomasmaughan4798

    @Jubei Yang Contemplate for a moment two goldfish in a bowl or aquarium. One is trying to persuade the other of the existence of "water". The second says, "There is no such thing as water, prove it to me!" How is that to be done? It cannot be done; for both fish have been in water their entire lives and consequently don't even have a name for it. There is no boundary condition by which to detect it. But the first fish leaped out of the tank and was quickly rescued by something with five fingers, who the first fish named "god" but was Billy rescuing his pet goldfish. At any rate, the experience showed the fish the existence of NOT-water, by which the existence of water was bounded and defined. So it is that many people live in constant contact with God their entire lives not once realizing the nearly omni-presence, and if it was entirely omnipresent then nobody would detect it. But occasionally someone steps out of the light and perceives the darkness, and on perceiving darkness, also perceives light. Now between you and me, what exactly do you mean by stupid? I who see more things than you, or you who are blind? You are correct; my enhanced sight makes me more responsible for my decisions and actions; your limited vision somewhat excuses your choices because you cannot choose a thing you do not see. For that you are excused.

  • @thomasmaughan4798

    @thomasmaughan4798

    @Jubei Yang You must be one of the goldfish." Yes, and so are you. "You meant to say that God can be felt, touched, smelled and seen?" Yes, if he wishes it. you either have to go where he is, which is difficult to impossible, or he comes to you, which is possible but rare. "Even the goldfish see the water, feel it, smell it and swim in it." Water cannot be seen from the inside. I am a SCUBA diver among other things. What you see is not-water (dirt, fish, plants). You feel it but will not have named it "water". It simply *is* whatever it is and doesn't need a name. Have you named the baryons in which you swim right now? Probably not. "Where's your God?" Where ever he wishes to be. I am not his secretary to know where he is right now. "Can you feel him, touch him, see him, and smell him?" I can if he wishes it. Feeling is the easiest, next after that is seeing. Touching is extremely rare and I've never yet met anyone mention smelling him. That would probably be a sign of not-God. You have repeatedly failed to mention "hearing" which is the most common reportage regarding God. I shall include it for completeness. "You are even more stupid than your goldfish" Thank you for this opportunity to demonstrate my politeness as compared to your rudeness. "because the goldfish understand that they could not leave the water." So you are a "goldfish whisperer", knowing the thoughts of goldfish. That's interesting.

  • @thomasmaughan4798

    @Jubei Yang "You are more stupid than the goldfish." Seems like I've encountered those words before. Oh yes, your previous comment! It didn't work then. Perhaps it will work now. "When the water recedes and the goldfish cannot get oxygen from the water, it struggles to breathe." Ineed it does. "When its body is exposed to air, it knows that death is not far away and it will swim to deeper water." I think that *knowing* is an exaggeration but yes, it will instinctively seek out water more to its liking. "Goldfish are not stupid like you." Perhaps. But who are you conversing with and what does that make you? "Your God is omnipresent but you can't see, smell, or touch him." Well, mine isn't omnipresent. Your mileage obviously varies. "When I push your head understand water and you struggle to breathe, no God to help you!!!" I expect as much. He's more of a scientist; observes human beings, doesn't interfere much. "There's no God to save you." Agreed. I do not expect God to save me from assassins. What he is much more likely to do is to alert me to their presence. Gods do not save humans. Humans save humans. I should advise that I use the word "God" in a somewhat generic manner to mean any of many possible metaphysical agents that have the power to inform me of things. It is also likely that what you believe "God" means is different than what I mean by it; which is what makes these conversations so entertaining.

Because religion is all they have to hold onto. It's literally the only thing that provides them with real hope/consolation. Take that away from them and they're left with nothing except starvation, suffering, disease, and death. At the very best, one could come up with some series of thoughts that would reach to the conclusion that there is only a tiny chance that God does exist. It will always remain 100% certain that it is impossible to disprove the existence of God with 100% certainty, wether God exists or not. Just like most likely there will always be people, as long as there are people in this universe, who will deny any proof of God to be a true proof for God to exist. In short, I argue that the most rational decision one could make on this subject is never to accept any disproof of God as absolute truth, as such a proof could never be complete.

    that relates to Pascual's Wager. Sadly, those people have consigned themselves to living in perpetual fear of millions of vindictive gods who just might (very improbably) exist. Unlike you, I think therefore the argument against making Pascual's Wager is strong, and that people are in fact courageous enough to conclude that there is no supernatural being and none of these gods exist. This does take courage and a good understanding of science, but it is a step being taken by increasing numbers of people.

Literally, philosophy is love of knowledge. The brilliant physicist William Thomson, who was knighted and then raised to the peerage as Lord Kelvin, was professor of "Natural Philosophy" at Glasgow University. Properly interpreted, Natural Philosophy is NOT some vague speculations that happen to occur to the holder. Called free will. We turned from God because we give into the flesh and sin. Our wicked ways are what separates us from God, yet He still Sacrificed Himself on the cross because He loves and desires a relationship with us. We have the choice to choose the truth which is God, or evil which is of Satan. If God didn’t allow us to have free will to choose, what would be the point of it all? He wants us to choose to love Him. Though we are sinners, we are made new in Jesus Christ because He is the atonement for our sins. We are now justified in God’s eyes. He does not know sin (He isn’t a sinful being, only Holy). Yet we chose to go against Him and He still gave His only Son for us all so we may be His adopted children and inherit the Kingdom of God. We made this world evil by choosing Satan and sin, but not God. God promises those who don’t believe or have faith/repent that they will be damned to eternal Hell, away from Him. But that’s their choice. Why would God force someone to live with Him in Heaven for eternity? Those who do terrible things and don’t accept Christ, devoting to their lives to Him,will also be sent to Hell because He is a just God.

Not just because you strive to be a good person that you will never suffer. Faith in God is to suffer and still love HIM. To be thankful despite our sufferings. Not just because you don't get what you want that He does not love you. And sometimes, the things that will make you happy is not what you need or at least what you think you need. I see no evidence for an afterlife. Therefore most of your questions are meaningless. You have no evidence for an afterlife, even though you claim to be "zion bound". You think that some part of you exists without your body, and yet we know of only 4 forces in nature, and none of these would apply to your "soul". This was great, but the objection to the teleological argument, as usual, missed the mark. The main problem with that argument is that is assumes the conclusion in the premise. One must assume that life was an intended feature of the universe for that to work at all. And if one assumes that, then they have already accepted the idea of an intentional agent as the cause of the universe. To claim that god is proved by our existence is no more rational than a Poker player being dealt a good hand and assuming that there was a god who made that happen. Our existence is valuable to us, therefore we see a universe capable of producing and supporting us as "fortuitous", but that is purely subjective. Even if there were a god, what if all he wanted to create was a machine that could make complex elements, and the unintended, and possibly unwanted byproduct was us? This argument for god is as weak as the ontological argument - it sucks.

    7:06 Peter Hitchens makes an interruption to draw a distinction between "knows" and "believes" at a point when Peter is discussing a point John Lennox made, "if you believe the resurrection is true, there's a God". Perhaps he should have interrupted John! But it is quite simply a fallacious argument as he proves by example. But quite simply knowing and believing are related. If you "know" something is unlikely, impossible or implausible then you don't believe it and if you feel you know something is true, then you believe it. So I think it is stupid unless it is a confession that he believes in spite of his knowledge to the contrary. We can have doubts about whether we know anything. So you could argue that "knowing" is really having a strong belief indistinguishable from certainty.

I stated “almost All “ not all! I respect ppl’s beliefs until they try and push it on me then my other parties tend to come out and play ugly lol. Shhh... I hear voices but don’t tell anyone! JK with you. The chief duty of every new age is to upraise new men to determine its liberties, to lead it towards material success - to rend the rusty padlocks and chains of dead custom that always prevent healthy expansion. Theories and ideas that may have meant life and hope and freedom for our ancestors may now mean destruction, slavery, and dishonor to us! As environments change, no human ideal standeth sure! Whenever, therefore, a lie has built unto itself a throne, let it be assailed without pity and without regret, for under the domination of an inconvenient falsehood, no one can prosper. Let established sophisms be dethroned, rooted out, burnt and destroyed, for they are a standing menace to all true nobility of thought and action! Whatever alleged "truth" is proven by results to be but an empty fiction, let it be unceremoniously flung into the outer darkness, among the dead gods, dead empires, dead philosophies, and other useless lumber and wreckage! The most dangerous of all enthroned lies is the holy, the sanctified, the privileged lie the lie everyone believes to be a model truth. It is the fruitful mother of all other popular errors and delusions. It is a hydra-headed tree of unreason with a thousand roots. It is a social cancer! The lie that is known to be a lie is half eradicated, but the lie that even intelligent persons accept as fact - the lie that has been inculcated in a little child at its mother's knee - is more dangerous to contend against than a creeping pestilence! There is nothing inherently sacred about moral codes. Like the wooden idols of long ago, they are the work of human hands, and what man has made, man will destroy! This is evident of what’s going on in the world today. Man is determined to destroy man!

    There is no need to convince anyone outside of yourself that God is. The people calling themselves atheist will know that God is. It does not matter what anyone thinks outside of me, I know that God is, because I know that I Am. God is not separate from me, I am one with God. As I will not try to prove to anyone God is real by using books, I do not want anyone trying to disprove God by using books. I can only present myself as living proof that God is, because I Am. The proof of God is in you, and me, not outside of you, or me. If you can prove you are not, than you can prove that God is not. “I THINK! THEREFORE, I AM!” So because God is, therefore, I Am. God and me are one and the same. I dare not think that I Am separate from God, because I know that I am not separate from God, and God is not separate from me. There is no such thing as matter; everything we call matter, is: “Infinite Potential, Infinite Probability; Infinite Possibility; and Infinite Power” compressed into form, for a specific function. What we call death is the separation of the meta-physical me, from my temporal material body, the compressed functioning form of me that gave me an identity in the material world. Upon death I return to the anti-matter world where I can from, and in time the whole material Universe will decompress, and return to its purest form of infinite potential; infinite possibility; infinite probability; infinite power, and infinite promise, where everything is Light, Life, Alive, Love, and Living. I know all of these things to be true intuitively, I did not learn, know or understand these thing by anything outside of me, but by the eternal truth that is in me, and I am not blind, therefore I am free, and I can clearly see the truth. They obviously do not know the gentleman, but that last statement was a window into a better disposition.

    "are we supposed to accept" There is no WE. You are free to accept, or not, whatever you wish. I suggest at least pretending to subscribe to the ideals of your employer.

    @@Chickennuggie1498 "wot?" Yes, absolutely. I could write it again or you could save me the time and simply read it again. But it seems some elaboration might be needed. "Supposed to" is a rule based statement. It implies the existence of an Authority that has issued Rules that you are Supposed To obey. Authorities exist in vast number and includes your spouse, your employer, your church leaders or in substitute your DNC (Democratic National Committee), AND IF you wish to curry favor with your favorite Authority, THEN you are "supposed to" do whatever that authority decrees.

    @@Chickennuggie1498 "The whole biblical narrative is based on authority" Yes. Many authorities! The genius of some part of it is render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. I have many authorities in my life, well, several at least. When I was in the Navy long enough I became one of the authorities. I am also pedantic; I process words carefully. It is a useful skill for computer programming; sometimes less so in social settings where many people, maybe most, do not construct meaningful sentences. "are we supposed to accept the observations, conclusions of people who thought the world to be flat " Let us imagine a person named Tom. He lives near Fargo, North Dakota, and believes the world is flat, because at Fargo, North Dakota, it is so flat it doesn't even follow the curvature of the earth. This is because it is in the bottom of an extremely shallow bowl caused by the Red River valley. Anyway, he observes that summer is hot and winter is cold. Very cold. Indescribably cold. The question then becomes SHOULD you accept his observations? Oh, I misspoke; should WE accept his observation? I am a drone, a bee, a sheep; I do not think for myself in fact I have no idea what to think or do unless WE have decided it. Okay, well, I'm not actually a sheep or bee and I am not a we. But many people ARE we. I TENTATIVELY accept anyone's observations on any topic until and unless I have judged the observation to be false. Now, if the observation is within the realm of things I believe the person is in error about, I am less likely to even tentatively accept an observation. So, the person that believes the entire planet is a disk, and not a sphere, seems to be in error and is probably not a reliable source of information about geography, geology, astronomy, mathematics, navigation. But at the same time may well be expert in biology, genetics, computer science, electronics and so on; things that do not depend on correct understanding of the shape of the Earth.

That would be my personal test for anyone's so called "God"....

    It was really along the lines of "He is not supposed to be saying these things because they are false and cannot be proven true, while Jesus is proven true to exist and because he did exist, whatever he was like, he portrayed himself as God and was worshiped by many. And he, judging by the earlier scriptures, was prophesied to come as he came, no other god came as he did(Vishnu, Isis, Osiris, Thor, etc.)."* Just wanted to fix your grammatical error :)
