Going Off Grid Ep 12 - Framing out the Shed & Mezzanine Floor
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It's been a while since the last update (Since we finished the shed build). A lot has been happening for us. In brief we sold our house in Townsville QLD and moved all our belongings to our new property. That was a bit of an effort. We also has to fix a few issues with our beloved house of 22.5 years before the sale. So many fantastic family memories! The kids have grown up and moved on, so now we are on our new adventure, full time living off the grid on our new 4.5 acre bush property. We have an endless list of jobs to do.
In this video Judy and I framed out our walls and put in the Mezzanine floor. The timber is treated pine framing (Termite treated I'm told), 75x35 and 90 x 40mm for the load bearing walls. I really closed up the stud spacing between 400 to 450mm. I used bugle headed screws as they are super strong and easy to use (and I have a sore shoulder from hammering previously).
Thanks for watching!
Regards Scott and Judy

When I sold my house a few years ago the only emotion I felt was relief, but then my situation was unusual. But I do understand, a lifetime of memories built inside a home generates an attachment for most people. This is a great series - thanks for posting. Thumbs up!

Still in awe of your industriousness, precision and work ethic Scott! Big doings at this point in your lives. Kudos for the brave approach, and with great results! And Mrs. T is completely supportive and fully involved in all the other aspects of domestics, which is the only way the whole things works I'd say. Spectacular and engaging journey, thanks for sharing. Cheers.

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious My advice? Acquiesce on the colors. LOL. Cheers.
Hi Scott. You’ve made one small mistake in your framing. Each wall where it meets another wall has to have a stud so that the plaster has something to screw to. At the moment you have one wall that’s okay, and the other one has nothing. Also, yellow tongue is great for the walls. It’s a much better insulator than plaster and you can screw anything you want anywhere on the wall. With insulation behind it it’s unbeatable as an insulator. Great work. Cheers!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious

Thanks for your comment and pointing that out. I do know of it and I'll put the studs for the lining next week with any luck. I was considering the yellow tongue for walls but we opted for the easy VJ as it reminds us of our old place. Thanks again and all the best!
@judge462

Another tip when laying your studs you should always run your eye down the length and have them all bowing one way either up or down that way when you go to straighten the wall for your sheeting it will be a lot quicker.

Coming on Scott. I would be the size of a house if my misses kept feeding me cakes 🍰! Yum 😂 Just curiously what building regulations do you have to adhere to, if any as it’s a domestic dwelling. It’s a very different construction for a house with a mixture of prefab and timber.

I have to admit, I've never seen framing done with a Japanese pull saw or those massive screws with pilot holes. It's almost like you're a bit of a perfectionist, Scott! LOL Very well done. I feel like DeWalt or Milwaukee should reach out and send you a free nail gun! Also, the bonus space over the rooms is great extra storage and as you mentioned, a perfect sleeping loft. Cheers.

Nice work Scott. I built a loft like that in my shed above a closed in room which I thought would be a great place for storage and get clear up floor space. My kids thought it was a great idea too so they helped me fill it. Not much room left for poor old Dad. This video reminds me of building that and my poor wife helping me lift those heavy sheets of flooring. I have the sheets on the underside of the C-purlins as well, for a ceiling in that room with insulation between. It’s crazy the difference in temperature in there. You’ll appreciate it up there next summer no doubt. Cheers, Peter

G'Day Scott and Judy (the real boss ;) Coming up in 12 months I have a major dilemma. My boss and I are moving to rural Thailand and although we have a lovely house already on our block I will be building a 22 x 15 x 5 meter shed with 22 degree pitch. My dilemma is that, apart from language difficulties, they build sheds (of this size) with tubular trussed bearers and posts. All welded in situ and well the welding is not good.... I found a fairly local Blue scope steel/ Ranbuild company based off the Australian model we have here in Queensland. Kit sheds supplied off the customers requirements and delivered to site. We hope :) Your initial video I watched of the first shed you built will become the template for the locals to watch and learn on how we BOLT and SCREW it together rather than weld. I'm hooked and have watched every video you've posted since. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU... And I will be teaching them about slab prep too.. Thanks again you two and I'm hitting the SUBSCIBE button now :)

Nicely done! Efficient methods. Not only some great techniques in the framing, but also efficient use of materials. After years of hand nailing, I bought a nail gun and used it on quite a few jobs. Then it failed when I was assisting a homeowner build of a shed over a holiday weekend. I couldn't buy parts, but I could buy screws and even though I fixed the nail gun, I found that framing with screws made for accurate work and a calm and quiet jobsite. I was skeptical when I realized that you were planning to live full time in a "tin shed", but this is clearly going to be a very well made, durable, efficient, and nicely finished building. Funny thing, my career is sort of the reverse of yours. After 40 years of DIY making alongside construction, cabinetry, furniture building and craft/trade education, I recently retired and then took on a completely new sort of job...as an airplane mechanic.
