    It’s certainly meaningful to a player of the previous games but as someone who got into Gow through viewing the 2018 game before the previous games, there’s a lot of value in seeing the narrative from this point of view because you are essentially put into the same headspace as Atreus to an extent wanting Kratos to open up about his past and being fascinated to find out more about it.

    The blades are the Blades of Chaos which are Kratos’s signature weapons in the entire original series before this game (tho he does take on and use dozens of various weapons and magical abilities through the series) and he is called “The Ghost of Sparta” due to his skin being so pale (this is because the ashes of his original family are bound to his skin for eternity) along with his ruthless brutality for ANYONE in his way. He hates his past so much because he VERY brutally slaughtered the entire Greek pantheon as well as several Titans (titans are the beings that came before gods) Kratos also used the blades to slaughter MILLIONS of innocent civilians (often just as crossfire or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time or just being in his path) so he hates and fears his past as he doesn’t want his son to become like him following a brutal cycle that is constantly repeated in the realm of the gods (the cycle is a parent god doing something out of fear then the child returning to kill their parent and it repeats itself over and over) there is a lot more but you guys should really react to a full run through of Kratos’s past as there is a TON of information and it fills a LOT of gaps and background information for this game and it also causes a lot of character reactions and attitudes to make sense more. Also Kratos simply has a WILLDDDD backstory

    6:24 Fun Fact: So the invisibility trick Brok and Sindri use doesn’t originally come from dwarven mythology but gnomes. They escape from anyone by running behind a rock, and the moment they break line of sight they disappear. So the game developers used that as a way to explain how they get past all the obstacles you go through so that they are always at their shops. Also in addition to watching Kratos’ backstory I really hope they react to all of Mimir’s stories. Not only are they very important for the overall story but they are amazing to listen to. The Norse version of Hel is in my opinion FAR worse than any hell in any other religion. No a flaming pit, but a vast, endless, frozen wasteland, with no sense of warmth or heat, and little to no light.

    Hey, just something I wanted to mention from your first video is that Kratos and Ares are not the same characters. Ares was the first Greek God of War in the first game until Kratos replaced him for a brief time. Also, Kratos is a Greek Demi-God (Half God/Half Human). He was a demi-god at the start of the series, became a full god temporarily when he became the god of war, then became a demi-god again. Based on how the last game ended, there was a little confusion about whether he was a full god or a demi-god. Ultimately, I think he is a demi-god, even though they are calling him a god. And Kratos just called Atreus a god, and we know he is a demi-god, so the Norse gods (and maybe other creatures like dwarves) must consider people with the blood of a god a god, even if they aren't full gods. And considering how Kratos can hold his own against them, I think that makes sense. Also, Athena (the Goddess of Wisdom and War) is Kratos's half-sister (because Zeus was their father). Ares was also his brother for the same reason. Fun Fact: I heard people in Greece (either back then or still now) throw an apple to someone there are romantically interested in (and I think if the other person catches it, they know they're meant to be together). That is likely why Kratos cut the apple Sindri (one of the Dwarf brothers) threw to him (just wanted to mention that).

  • @dylanhopkins5934

    @dylanhopkins5934

    5 ай бұрын

    True he was born a demi-god. I think kratos still considers himself a full god though because he essentially regained all his powers and more after zeus killed him and he came back from the dead. And he gained other godly abilities in gow 3. Remember he needed the soul of a god I think in order to enter those teleport gates in gow 3 (technically he should still have hades soul in him too). He doesn't have all of his abilities anymore, which he explains in the next game why, but he still ages like a god rather than a mortal so thats another reason that points toward him still being a full god. As far as the norse gods go, yeah they do consider half gods gods still. Technically thor would be a demigod in greek mythology.

  • @user-mc1qb2qb3g

    @user-mc1qb2qb3g

    5 ай бұрын

    True, he does seem to age like a God, so he could be a full God. But I believe the weapon he took from Hades, in God of War 3, held his soul, not Kratos himself. Also, a demigod would be half human and half God. You can still be half God and half something else (besides human) to be a full God, so I don't think Thor is a demigod considered a God. He is a God. But, some possible evidence towards Kratos being a God would be at the end of gow3 when he stabs himself with the blade of Olympus. That blade held his godly power after Zeus stole it (and I don't think he got that back after Zeus killed him because he never seemed to be more powerful than a demigod when he came back to life, and Zeus wouldn't have allowed or risked that happening) and he could have absorbed that power back after stabbing himself and releasing the power of hope to the world. But if that was the case, then Kratos should be more powerful than he is in the new gow games. When Kratos was the god of war, he could become a powerful giant (not the race) god. The norse gods may not be able to do that, but the greek gods could, and he would be a greek god. Maybe it's a choice, but I don't know. I think it's possible he is a full god, but I still think he's a demigod. If you consider him a full God, that's ok. I think someone should ask this to the developers.

  • @dylanhopkins5934

    @dylanhopkins5934

    5 ай бұрын

    @user-mc1qb2qb3g you could maybe argue that hades soul is really inside the weapon that kratos took, but we see it actually go inside kratos's body and not the weapons. There's no reason to assume hades soul left him either, so I'm more inclined to think it's still inside him. Thor in norse mythology isn't considered a demigod, but by Greek rules he would be. Demigod doesn't just mean half human and half god. And since thor is mixed with something that isn't considered a god or divine being, that would technically make him a demigod. Kratos didn't get his powers back right after coming back from the dead, but he does get other powers from the help of the titans in order to go back in time to fight zeus. It's what happened in gow 2. And kratos uses the blade of Olympus many times in gow 2 and 3 so if he did reabsorb his powers then he probably did it long before he stabbed himself. I doubt it though, because he never uses any old godly powers in gow 3 at all like growing into a giant (although now that im thinking about it, i dont think his ability to turn giant was put into the blade of olympus. It was given to the giant statue he fought so maybe thats not an ability he could've absorbed from the blade anyways). As to the reason why he doesn't seem as powerful or more powerful in the new games, well, that's what I was hinting at before in my previous comment. He explains why he doesn't have his other abilities in the next game. Gow ragnarok. I didn't want to go into specifics just in case it's spoilery for the ladies doing the reaction. But then again, you don't hear why in a cutscene, so they'll probably miss it. I'll just say it here then with a small warning. (*minor spoiler ahead for those who haven't played god of war ragnarok) Its explained in the next game that his powers were basically bound to the land, and when he destroyed Greece, much of his powers left with it. So it's not by choice that he doesn't use other powers (that includes all other weapons he had besides the blades). I still consider him a god though, and since the developers are calling him a god, then it's probably safe to assume he's full god.🤷🏾‍♂️

  • @khazms

    @khazms

    5 ай бұрын

    Cory Barlog (Game Director) has stated Kratos is a full God. I guess maybe they retconned the idea of Demi-God or perhaps there never was a concept of it. Maybe it could simply be he inherited Ares's Godhood abilities which doubled Kratos's own Godhood. Basically, like how Atreus is currently not a God, but eventually develops into one. Simply knowing they are a God is what allows them to develop their "Godhood". That's the most probable assumption to make with what this and Rangarok have shown.

    Kratos did a lot of monstrous things in his past, even to those who didn’t deserve it. Christopher Judge’s performance in the scene with Athena is one of my favorites in this game. The way Kratos responds to Athena when she calls him a monster, and he says “I know.” You can hear the sorrow about that in his voice. Thing I love about this story is how it’s a redemption. This cut is a little weird. It cut the dialog from Mimir on the way to Freya but kept the dialog of Freya talking about her banishment. I guess because Freya sort of repeats what Mimir says.

I love seeing video games being used in ways like this to tell deep and complex stories and really utilising the medium to add layers to that - this game in particular is fantastic in how it basically all runs as one continuous camera shot, including when transitioning between normal gameplay that the player has control over and when there are more dialogue-heavy scenes where you can put the controller down and watch things unfold. Really special.

    Unfortunately the significance of the references to the previous games and the Greek pantheon is lost on you guys. But thats fine because I think this game does a good job as a stand alone story. You'll just have a different experience from the rest of us. But after your done you really need to check out either the story of the previous games or an abridged version of it or atleast a compilation of all the executions. I know alot of comments have been really aggressive and mean when suggesting that. But you really are missing out

    So the game making him travel all the way back to Freya and not fast travelling or cutting to it is because this game has no actual cuts. It's all just one long take, so to speak. The camera just moves and follows the action it needs to, but there's no cutting between characters in dialogue or any fade to black moments at all. It really sells the sense of journey for these three characters.

    Just for reference the thunder storm during Kratos' journey was Thor beating the 💩 out of his son Modi for allowing his big brother to be killed while he fled in fear. Also it's hard to spot because of the bird being so distracting (i missed this first time as well lol) was at 41:50 after Kratos kills the Bridge Keeper and basically desecrates his body to get his heart he takes a moment and places his hand on his chest as a sign of respect. Kratos absolutely doesn't think this guy is an A-hole. This is the soldier in him (he was a Spartan soldier before he became a Demi God) showing respect to another soldier who didn't just randomly attack him in the wild on his journey but was just a being doing their job/duty and because of his decision to not be truthful with Atreus about his lineage led him to the point where he has to kill this being in order to save him. He has no problem doing whatever it takes to save his son but it shows he still has morals and can show remorse. Athena and him both agree he will always be a monster but it's certainly not his main and only characteristic. Kratos has never been very talkative throughout all the games but in this one he is particularly non verbal as he is a lot older and wiser than he was in the previous games and has seen some 💩. His age hasn't been confirmed by the studio or developers as far as I'm aware but educated guesses have his age around 1050 years old. If you pay very close attention his body language and combat ferocity (Spartan Rage) often says more than his words by how he reacts to events and people's words. Slight heads tilts, furrowing of the brow, standing more upright, clenching of fists etc tells you exactly what he's probably thinking in that moment without uttering a word and the voice and motion capture body acting by Christopher Judge is just absolutely superb. One of the best written characters in video game history without a doubt.

    @@paxapunch2708 Not really, not when it comes to God of War. That franchise has such an important trilogy the 2018 game is a bit underwhelming, when it comes to storytelling, if you have no prior knowledge of the trilogy's storyline. I'm not saying the story of the 2018 game is bad or anything, it's just a little bit generic and weird, cause you'd have no concept of some of the Kratos' motivations. Like as an example - they clearly are reacting to the story and don't get why Kratos is the way he is. And that's not their fault, it's just how the game's written, it's ,in fact, for people who've played the original trilogy.

  • @thefonz8373

    @@paxapunch2708 I get that. I think that is one of the strengths of this game, that it can stand on it's own. But you have to admit, getting the chaos blades or the scenes with Athena or the scene with meeting Zeus in hell etc isn't as impactful without context. Hell even Atreus relationship with Kratos is missing a lot of context. Without it, he seems like yet another hard ass dad who is trying to form a relationship with his son. While admittedly it is a tried and true trope, the context of Knowing about his past family and the horrors he experienced really underscores the themes in this game

    Y’all need to watch the cutscenes for the old games. You look so damn confused 😂. Long story short, kratos WAS a demo god. He became a full god later, then lost his powers and became a demo god again then at the end of the Greek series he got his full godhood back but lost all of the magical abilities he had. The only god power he kept was his enhanced strength. He use to have a lot more powers. Kratos explains why he lost most of his powers in the new game.

    Well now that this game is currently surprising you with its story. I'm hoping to see more reactions to games then. Because boy, this ain't the only game that has a deep story. It's the very reason we have a show like The Last of Us. Video games are a legit mode of story telling now. Has been for a while actually. And a video game can tell stories that are worth multiple feature-length films. I'd argue that games can offer so much more than films can in narratives, because some games have branching paths and different endings. Also, one of the cool things about video games now is that it's not just programmers, developers, producers, directors, and voice actors. We're at a point where actual performances by real actors are captured for games so they feel very life-like. It's honestly one of the best things to happen to story-driven video games.
