Goalkeeper | The Loneliest Job in Football | Documentary

Спорт

Who’d be a goalkeeper? You stand on your own, cut off from the rest of the team, taking abuse from the opposition fans. Your job is to prevent the very reason supporters come to games - goals. You voluntarily put yourself in the way of flying balls. And no matter what you do, you always get criticised. You'd have to be mad to be one, right? FFT talks to the unique individuals who don the gloves to find out what makes them tick.

I like how this video focuses a lot on the mental side of being a goalkeeper. I absolutely love how they go over how being goalkeeper is just so lonely and encased to the keeper himself. As a keeper, every goal you let it, it just destroys you mentally because your mind goes over the situation again and again thinking of all the ways you could have blocked the ball. It's just such a mental position that many can't handle. So much respect to every single goalkeeper out there!

I used to be a goalkeeper. I quit because our coach didn't play me and disrespected me. He told me I was too short, although the goalkeeper who usually played instead of me was only about 1-3 inches taller, and didn't even come to all training sessions. By then I was 14 years old, and it made me very depressed since I really wanted to play professional football as a goalkeeper, and I really felt I had a chance. But instead I got played with the 12 year olds, and performed very well, got praise from their coach (not mine, he didn't give a shit), I basically showed proof that I was good enough to play in the team. But I never got to for some reason, and I don't know why. That feeling of your dream slowly being crushed is truly horrible, so I quit because I didn't want to experience it anymore. I am quite lucky to have good grades, I couldn't imagine how I would have kept on going otherwise, knowing I might become nothing.

I’m not that great of a goalkeeper. And when I played with my high school team (I was the back-up), I was getting harsh criticism. It made me realize what it really meant to be a goalkeeper. Also, in my local rec league, I was widely hated. I would get bullied, I would be told that I’m weak and not good, I even had one player who spit on me. BUT, in all that, there is nothing more satisfying than shutting someone up than stopping a shot. That’s why I’m a goalie.

@Witchytoe some managers just suck, one time I conceded a goal, a chip shot from midfield while I was too far ahead of the box, I got blinded by the lighting tracking back and missed the save. My coach was furious and told me "how are you gonna recover from that mistake now?". Truth is that was the last goal I conceded that match of a total of 2, for the rest of the match they weren't able to score again and were trashed 9-2 at their home field.

I've suffered from some rather dark depression and anxiety for around 10 years now and this documentary has helped me realize that it may have something to do with the mental abuse I got from my teammates and coaches as a goalie in high school. Regardless, I am immensely proud that I was the one to be put in goal and I think I might find an adult league and reprise my role

Hello there; I sure hope that you followed through with your thoughts. being a goalkeeper is touch in so many ways. When I was young I lost my nerve as a goalkeeper after coming off worst in a one to one. My first injury. It was during a training match during trails for the youth team of my island. It was one goalkeeper vs 3 forwards. So i was really up against it, but one on one was my speciality. I acted fast and got the ball, but I also got the foot that was meant to connect to the ball. I was severly winded and dropped the ball and the other team went on to score. I finished the game without any problems and it's from that point everything went wrong. The coaches decided that I'd fallen off the horse and had to get back on, so to speak. They took me into the gym and forced me to make one on one saves. This was completely unnatural to me and despite what had happened up until this point I'd not registered anything as being wrong. Instead this workout did the opposite and instilled fear into me, that hadn't been there before. Why the coaches felt the need to take such action, I don't know. I'd not exhibited any fear during the game after the accident, nothing was broken. I just had sever bruising of the ribs and got on with the game. Then the league team I was playing for made matters worse and that was the end of any dream that I had to play pro football. I kept on playing, but the fear was always there. I became depressed and became ever more depressed. I loved my football. I was only 14 at the time and it took 40 years before I regained my full confidence. Now at 61, forwards would rather give me the ball, than I come and get it! I now what depression is, I've lived with it for decades, but now I am able to cope with it for the most part, but where my football is concerned, I manage to leave it in the dressing room. So if you haven't, I encourage you to do so. And if you have, good for you. remember the ball has to get past the 10 players in front of you, before it can get past you. You're there to basically save their necks, they rely on you. You have to keep them in the game, without you the team doesn't stand a chance and they have to do their job in defending and in scoring! The Black Panther (Players started calling me this when I was 11 and playing senior football in the business league. I was 6'2" and they never realised how young I was.)

I remember when i was a futsal goalie on my high school and college. It's so much fun when i got to deny couple great shots from great strikers + when i got to save the penalty. It's brilliant feeling to me. But, the worst part being a goalie was no matter how many saves you got, they still gonna blame for 1 or 2 mistakes lead to goal even worst they boo-ing you from the seats.

Quite a bit of months ago when I was 11, I never understood this and thought it was kinda stupid. But I look in the past and realised who stupid I was for thinking this as I just turned a complete goalkeeper after playing outfield too. The goalkeeper position is great as I love diving in the mud and hitting the ground, it’s jaw dropping that I thought everyone who did this was “crazy” and I guess you could call me that.

Really great piece of work. It's funny for me to see the connections between goalies in different sports. The position just attracts the crazy people whether it's Rene Higuita, Gilles Gratton the mad goalie adage rings true. There is something just inherently mad about wanting to stand in front of a powerful strike or a giant slapshot. Being a goalie is so much more on the mental side of things such as having irrational confidence in ones self or just trying to keep your mind sharp throughout the ebbs and flows of the game. Goalies are definitely one of the underappreciated positions in sports. I am actually surprised how they left out how important the goalie is in communicating to the team.

Aight, I’m a 12 year old keeper, I can either have nothing to do and asking on of the supporters for their chair, or there are some games where the ball barely leaves my box unless I do a high punt into their half and I do most of the work, I definitely prefer the more action games (no extra points for guessing that)
