That bit at 4:14 made my stomach drop. When I was little and walking with my mother up to a convenience store at night, if I caught a glimpse of the back, I would think "damn that looks creepy, glad I'm with my mom and not back there." I used to look out of the car window at deserted streets late at night like "damn it's creepy out there, glad I'm in here with mom." This whole map recreates a very specific feeling I didn't know could be accurately recreated

Maps like these just make me think of 'Ara and the Empty Universe'. Specifically, what the titular character likely was going through as she drove to each town and city looking for any signs of people... and just finding ghost town after ghost town. Maybe even finding houses with lights still on or other electronics still going, music playing, and having that brief moment of thinking you found someone else but upon checking it out you find you are still indeed alone.

Hello, librarian, I recommend you explore Gm_Vacant_Industry when you have the time, it's an incredibly huge map with plenty of secrets and it'll probably have you spending hours trying to find every little thing on it. Side note: Haven't watched this whole video yet but I already know it's gonna be an absolute banger

Going for long walks late at night is a great way to clear your head. Just be careful and always be aware of your surroundings. Also I really dislike the new LED street lights, the sodium vapor lights were so much easier on the eyes.

I love walking by myself at night while listening to CHVRCHES and some of my favourite bands. It's such a good vibe. The cold breeze is my favourite part about it. Sad thing is that they replaced the amber lights with the boring LED ones. Taking pictures at night with the fog and amber lights was such a vibe. Now it's all boring and blend

I disagree. I couldn't tell jack from squat with those sodium lamps. LEDs are far better, they let me tell apart colors and shapes, especially when I'm driving. But maybe my city uses better LED lamps than you guys'.

33:40 the blue street lamp may be meant to be an older LED, as they age the yellow phosphor starts to break down causing them to eventually turn purple. some also do this very early due to quality control of LEDs being a lot more expensive than bulbs, which makes it done a lot less

Yep! I know at certain street corners and bathrooms there’s intentional ones that (supposedly) make it harder to find veins for users. There’s a few old lamps that i’ve watched turn bluer and bluer over a couple weeks down town. it’s not instant, seems the cells degrade at different rates.

I've also seen this happen to some street lights, where the output of worn-out ones will be a very dim, pale bluish-white colour. Sometimes, they'll be even more pale than usual and their brightness is constantly fluctuating. Are these mercury vapour lamps or sodium vapour lamps that I'm seeing where this happens?

About that question pretty early on. As a “young’un” I can confirm that this map exudes perfect creepy and comfy feelings. I may have never lived in a place akin to this, but it still feels incredibly nostalgic. I think there’s only one place I’ve ever lived in that exudes something similar to this creepy and comfy feeling. There was a really new apartment complex that I lived in, and it had large fields around it on all sides. There was basically nothing else built besides this new apartment. The wide grass fields on all sides were so incredibly dark at night. The only thing that had shone light for miles was this place, and the little road next to it. At least, that’s what it felt like. Looking back at it today, the fields and woods surrounding it aren’t nearly that large, and there’s a couple of buildings around the area. But even so, in my young mind I remember looking out my second story window, and seeing the orangish glow of the street lights barely keeping the darkness of the fields out, barely keeping me safe from whatever lived in the long wispy grass..

As someone who lives in the UK, the map is half relatable if that makes any sense. The lighting of the map gives of feelings if nostalgia but the architecture does not. I relate to gm_shambles more and the houses on that map are something im more used to.

Most people from High school and College can get this feeling during night whenever they are going home at this late hours. Imagine when someone goes missing and never got found the next day

A youngin’ here, I don’t know, these GMod maps like Shambles, this and that British highway map are just really calming, they always remind me of walking back to my car after going to a party, or Halloween. Shambles at day too has a really peaceful vibe. (It makes me with for a foggy morning version of this map like Shambles has)

im definitely not the only person to say this but one of the comfiest things about this channel is how, without fail, it always seems like we're right next to librarian as he plays, like.. we're all just a part of his friendgroup, i find myself almost.. talking *with* librarian as he plays, like he could hear me, cause the things he says seems so.. directly to YOU. and not just.. like gameplay, but theres someone speaking too its.. just a seriously nice thing, and a big part of why librarian is my comfort youtuber

It seemed like I had someone who shared my thoughts, loved the same things, and that truly made my day each time. This map really reminds me of my home town of nampa, especially the outskirts of the downtown area, Nampa is a suburb of Boise, but has been around ever since Boise was established. It’s a railroad town so its planning is horrible, the grid is shifted. This map really reminds me of driving at 2 in the morning with my brother going to my house from my other brothers apartment, Listening to snoop dog or whatever. This map just really gives me that bittersweet feeling, abandoned supermarkets in shopping centers and random houses off highways. And the best part, they still use those sodium vapor lights all along downtown.

I think empty churches are really slept on in eerie maps. I grew up being in churches at all times of the day, so I doubt most people get the same nostalgia from that that I do. So many other creepy and comfy maps already remind me of waiting in a dark church hall only lit by street lights through the windows, and I think there's so much potential in that kind of setting from a liminal space perspective. It's so comfy in that it's such a familiar space at a time when the street outside is asleep, but still creepy with the sprawling empty offices and meeting rooms from when the church was more popular that are now just filled with old junk. The most unsettling part for me as a child was knowing that the comfort could quickly turn to discomfort depending on what human interactions I had.

1:27 during the night your hearing is way more sensitive than during the day, not only because things are quieter but because it is actually easier to hear minor sounds during the colder temperatures of the night, i do military night watches from 11 pm to 6 am, you can hear a leaf falling on the ground from a 100 meters away, im glad im not a jumpy guy but doing it is not for the light hearted

There is actually a ritual to be completed on this map, and I will say it involves both the spooky basement and the sewer.

Liminal spaces, creepy and comfy and concepts like that are special for everyone i think, like for example American childhoods and Eastern European ones are very different, while American people will find some stuff creepy or see it as a liminal space people that had different childhoods will see them as completely normal places. So that means concepts like liminal spaces and etc. are special for everyone which is really cool! (mb for bad wording, English is my 2nd language)

Im much younger, but i still get the creepy comfy vibes from what you describe. I think its less about nostalgia but more about similar situations and experiences-like weather or being in a forest. Although, i think nostalgia can help, like some people are nostalgic for different video games while others arent. For me, being in a car, sort of scared because you're shrouded in darkness except for the light reflecting off of signs, is that creepy comfy feeling. Especially when its raining.

I’m a teen and get reminded of that feeling all the time. For example my dad took me to a warehouse for an event. Besides the main room, it was dark and eerie. I tried to go deeper into it once but was worried I wasn’t allowed to. I wish i did

To answer your question, Librarian, yes it does. I both want to curl up beneath one of those lamps and watch the skies for the movement of something truly imaginary.

You talked about doing walks on the morning and getting scared by leaves and bags and I can relate to that. I usually go for walks at dawn cause I don't like going for walks with people around and I always get scared by random noises and shadows that look like a person lurking in the dark. I normally walk while listening to my favourite musics and bands but sometimes I just go for a silent walk. And sodium vapor lights were a thing until early this year here on my city. I loved taking pictures at night with the fog and amber lights. But now it's all LED light that are just boring.

I do indeed get creepy and comfy from this

As a “young’un”, I related a lot with this, reminds me of my hometown. Sneaking over to the convenience store at night getting pocket change by cleaning for them, although as I’m scared, not of the dark, but if being attacked, I’m paranoid so I always have my pocket knife on me. The creepy and comfy vibe of this map is definitely there, and I like the creepy and comfy vibe, hence why I’m here.

Huh, how interesting. At first i thought i saw an ''Exploring gm_Nightlight'' video on your channel about a week before, but about a few minutes ago when i was searching for the video, i wasn't able to find it... And now, you suddenly made a video about it, how coincidental!

My favorite thing about this map, what makes it extra creepy; is that this looks like a place that’s very clearly meant for people to inhabit. Hell, you even hear the sounds of cars in the background. It helps that it echoes places you can find in the real world. It’s truly as off all this town’s residents just mysteriously up and vanished. However for some reason it left you behind, alive. Taunting you with the false promise of life (the idol civilians in that one store), leaving you to descend to madness with the ceaseless emptiness. Only an ominous feeling to company you, one that won’t leave you even in that church. Eventually you realize something, you could very well be that ominous presence. *_You_*_ could be the monster_

The only jumpscare in this video is him yelling in terror after seeing actual human beings

Part of what makes the nostalgic buildings like schools and churches in the dark of night so exciting and creepy is the cognitive dissonance of them being murky and empty. Your mind is so used to it being light and crowded that it can't internalize the opposite idea of dark and emptiness, despite being stared in the face by it.

I think that even as a young person the sodium vapor lights still evoke the creepy comfy vibe beacause the lights around my home used to have the same warm glow, but also i think that beacause of the soft warm glow of the lights help with the creepy comfy vibe

The fact there are flat screen computer and television monitors, the computers are all running on Windows 12, and the modern Amazon logo, strongly implies this is NOT set in the 90s. In fact this must be set in the future, because Windows 12 isn't out yet.

When I was VERY young (No older than 10) those late night trips from my state to Maine to see my grandfather, and stopping at a gas station or a chain store like Walmart and just sitting in the car waiting for my parents to come back out was an experience. Most of the time my Mother would stay with me but for the times she didn't stay in the car with me, it was almost a whole other civilization or lack-there-of.

God your vivid imagination adds so much to the commentary of these maps. Not even 2 minutes in and you're already rattling on about what you're seeing. Has to be my absolute favorite part of these types of videos.

I gotta say, this 100% made me think of gm_shambles. That dark setting dotted with the orange glow of street-lamps is quite an interesting one. Also, my personal take on liminal spaces, analog horror, and creepy-comfy is that these things are definitely rooted in childhood. I think that these places and things are so interesting to people because they were the background filler between destinations during childhood, like a hallway in a mall or school, or the dark, orange-lit streets you saw through the back window of a car being driven home from an event, or in the case of analog horror, news segments on the television that your parents watched and you ignored as you played with toys on the living room floor.

That would be a nice neighborhood to cruise on a bike or play flashlight hide-and-seek with friends.

One of my family members used to work the evening shift at a church when I was younger, I don't recall any spooky vibes back then but there were a few rooms that definitely felt off, especially the pitch black sanctuary

I've always been a big night owl so these sorts of environments I find soothing. The brightness, bustle, heat, all keeps me from enjoying just those solitary moments in life where you can absorb yourself in the greater portrait of life. I love seeing the lights following the streets and alleyways, like will-o-the-wisps of modern technology beckoning me towards places like the street nearby I skip all the time, or just an interesting piece of urban/rural infrastructure that often becomes forgotten in the big machine of daily living. Where others are asleep, it gives me the space to walk. Both my body, and mind.

Can't get enough of these Librarian gmod adventures. Love them!

I was playing swat 4 and man does some of the levels of that game have the same vibes of this map Fairfax The gas station The concert And a a lot of the user maps I really wish a lot more developers played into these vibes A game that im super excited for is "wronged us" It takes this small american town vibe and puts it to 11 damn that game looks so nice especially the liminal vibes i get from it 29:00 its a good point you make. Your speaking on the before times the big divider being 9 11 and then the shift happening officially in 2006 when the i phone came out. And i love the way you describe the less involved and smaller feeling world. A more connected world feels less personal less comfy and less safe. And with the end of history at the dawn of social media and the transfer of us going from the real to the simulacrum is what your describing. Glad I'm not the only one that takes night walks

Man, this is just t h e v i b e s. That orange light vibe was still pretty common when I was younger, especially on highways. Also the feelings about being alone at night in your church or similar place hits home because I frequently got to do so growing up; that feeling of knowing the realest version of the building as a constructed space is very unique.

Might seem outta place for this kinda comment but im going through absolute hell rn and your gmod videos really help me distract myself from the situations around me and make me feel better and comfortable somehow. Thank you and please keep doing what your doing 🙏

Wow, those sounds hit differently-- I don't live in a city anymore, but living in a town shaped my childhood and everything about this was very nostalgic for me, especially the cars, the dark backyards, and the street lights (which I always found annoying as a kid because the light would always come in past my curtains right onto my bed). With all that atmosphere, I half expected to hear the clang of the flagpole alongside everything else.

I explored this one, loved the bench in the garden, sitting on it and just chilling listening on the sound effects and meteo was great

When you talked about how lights at night gives us that confy nostalgia I feel you, I'm from Colombia and watching you talk about that feeling I kown very well about it, in fact when I was a child sometimes some relatives from US comes to visit and many times I went to the airport at night in the backseat of a car, with the night air flowing, the yellow lightbulbs passing by, that was and keep being a great memory and a great feeling

Love your videos. I was very into night walking from around 2012-2016. I used to spend hours alone in these kinds of environments multiple nights a week. The way you describe the nostalgia and other feelings triggered by the late night urban areas is spot on.

This reminded me of feelings I haven’t experienced in such a long time. I remember going out at night as a kid felt like a event like you said. A few years ago I explored my neighborhood at night and it felt so similar to this. This map is just oozing with Atmosphere, to the point I forgot I was watching a Garry’s mod video. It reminds me of a time as a kid. A time of being super curious about the world at night, yet still creeped out by the environment, but it was It was in a fun way. I will say, this map doesn't really touch the "Creepy and Comfy" side of my brain as much as it does others, but I fully agree that it has to do with my upbringing and memories. I was inside a lot when I was younger, and I really only interacted with my close neighborhood and school. The image of the cookie cutter suburban houses at twilight really hits home for me. Another strange liminal "thing" that really hits me for some reason is a typically really busy road at noon being completely deserted. Anyways, keep it up with the great videos, I just wanted to put my two cents in!

My area still uses the same sodium lamps they installed back in the early 2000s. Most of them have fallen apart when the council abandoned the area but there is a few still giving off that nostalgic yellow light.

Hello, thanks for your content, it often helps me fall asleep normally. I remember "Places You've Seen In Your Dreams" especially well, I love it, it is even updated often as I noticed. I would like to recommend walking around "TTT_Surface", this is one of those maps that at first glance is just cool, but... There is something in it. The atmosphere is oppressive, the ambient sometimes looks like someone's breathing close and the sounds of someone's presence. For example, there is one short and nasty metallic clang from which, in contrast to the quiet noise of the wind, it becomes unbearably disgusting, in my opinion. As well as other sounds. Keep making videos like this, I love them so much)

I used to go to an elementary school that was right next to a church, sometimes events for instance like Halloween Parties would be hosted and I’d go with my friends and we’d eat cupcakes, drink kool aid and hang outside while talking about who’s costume was gonna win and if Kimberely was really talking shit about Brianna, I really miss that school, I’m in 10th grade highschool now and yes for the better we do still sometimes have Monster Mashes and MOST of us wear our Halloween costumes.

On the inside you have pillars as a slight protection from incoming bullets and on the outside, you have more space as a head start for running if someone would run at you from one of the stores with a knife in hand.

As a younger person, I'd say the creepy/comfy feelings still apply, less so due to nostalgia and more so because of the atmosphere itself. The yellowish-orange lamps illuminating the place with warm light, inherently making the place more comfortable, contrasted with the dark sky, empty stores, and dark areas filled with trees. And it seems to be the early 2000's, I spotted what looks to be a 2004 Ford Expedition at the party house (26:23). Hello librarian. I agree with your begining monolog about how we always have had these experiences and just had no way of sharing them. I think that is one of the reasons creepypastas and youtube horror stories became so big. Because they all have stories or ideas that generic horror movies or even books never really touched on.

If I had GMOD or any skills in creation in it, I would create a map that is essentially a compilation of every room the Librarian has every called "Mine!" too.

Those Orange lights always take me back to the late 90's when my parents would drive us back up home after spending friday nights visiting my great grandparents. always remember just watching my shadow appear and disappear as the orange lights overhead passed by in the back of the front seats of my parents.
