    Probably because of how funny that comes off, like a cinderblock falling from one story could definitely kill someone lol Mixed it up with the tossing a coin from the empire state building, which theoretically is true but that is if wind drag isn't accounted for. Fun Fact: Wind can do some whacky stuff. Like if you spin and drop a basket ball from a high place it will go really far forward thanks to how it interacts with the wind, it's nuts.

    I don't think you get enough credit for how emotionally vulnerable you make yourself to these maps. Not very many people would be able to do this kind of content without going on the defense or breaking the tension somehow. Your commentary is how I imagine I would feel being alone at night playing one of these maps, and that really adds to the atmosphere

  • @ToyokaX

    @ToyokaX

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think so too. I think you hit the nail on the head with the tension-breaking stuff that most other content creators do. In some way it's good to break the tension to stay sane to brush away the fear, but when it comes to exploring something spooky for the audience, I think it's a lot more surreal when the content creator gets in the spooky mood, because it also invites the audience watching them to feel that as well. There were quite a few moments in this video and other past videos where I had shared the same moment of "oh god what the hell is that" just because The Librarian also mentioned it. Or in another way, his reaction elicits a reaction from me too. I think there is not enough of this kind of content, and I'm glad that Librarian has found his niche.

    About the pretending to be scared thing, playing games in VR is a completly different ball game than watching it on a tv. I dont get affected much by horror games at all, i might find them a bit creepy at times, but watching things on a TV doesnt scare me. On the other hand, Ive played games in VR where i just had to stop because the tension built up in such a way it became too much. Something standing behind you when you turn around is quite different when all you see is the game world and whatevers there without the framing of real life around it. Never came across to me like mr Librarian here pretends to be scared or creeped out, like i said, VR is a different beast.

    Yeah, the sense of scale and immersion added by VR just changes everything on a fundamental level. Something that'd make me roll my eyes and sigh if I were playing it normally makes me throw my headset off in a panic attack in VR. There's just no comparison.

    From what i've heard from people with VR headsets, It feels like your life is actually at stake. Because you feel like you are physically there. You are a living being, And there might be something else that knows you are there. I may jump at jumpscares on pc, But i cant even imagine what different hell you must feel when you think you are in that situation. Just there.

  • @StalwartTirith

    @@AArbiter If you're ever able to, I definitely recommend giving it a go at least once. Especially if you can easily get immersed in something. When you play a game and a person is in front of you, you don't really grasp that fact because you're seeing them on a flat screen. In VR, they're standing right in front of you, eye-level, as though you were actually there. It's insane and I love it.

    The "LoD" thing that you mentioned at around 9:50 is actually just Source engine fog doing it's thing. Several explanations as to what's happening: - The way fog is rendered in Source (depending on the settings of the fog controller), it does not work well with wide screen resolutions or high FOV player camera. So looking at things from a certain angle at the edge of your screen can reveal things in fog due to how the fog is affected by the player's view. Imagine the camera as a flat vertical plane, and the fog's influence as a sphere around that plane/the player. The wider the camera plane (FOV/resolution), the more distorted/stretched both ends of the sphere become (which starts to become an ovoid) to compensate for the plane's length. This contributes to the wackiness of fog (if set improperly) because of how closely it is tied to the player's camera. - The fog controller's start and end values are quite close to each other and the fall-off is drastic enough that things can disappear in certain view angles and pop in in other view angles. The further the start and end values are from each other (and from the player), the more gradual the fall-off and the less noticeable the effect at greater distances. - The fog that's being seen at the edge of the map is actually 3d skybox fog, which has its own properties that are separate from the main map's actual fog. If the values of both version of fog don't match up accurately, you can get varying degrees of vision through fog depending on where you're looking at in relation to the main map and the skybox. - Any combination of the above

  • @blinded6502

    @blinded6502

    In other words, fog shader uses not distance away from camera, but a depth - how far ahead this specific pixel is. Which causes you to actually see further through the fog on the edges of your screen. I remember being stuck for hours with my own atmosphere shader for planets acting all sus - creating circular shapes of bright and dark spots; - until I realized what the problem was.

    I think one of the reasons why Garry's mod maps are so creepy is the lack of NPCs. It is very difficult to include immersive/custom npcs in creating a map in source, so most creators just exclude them, which in turn results in loneliness. When you can't include NPCs that add immersion, you become reliant on map details, which is perfect for these videos. Now that gmod vr has become more popular, I wonder if there will be any spooky maps designed specifically to be explored in vr

    I'm bored so as a Russian speaker I will be translating all the text that's in Russian. 0:00 - Red neon sign - "PRODUCTS" aka "GROCERIES" 1:59 - Red sign on the wall - TOP "Fresh meat for you"; BOTTOM "Best present from us" (rhymes in Russian, doesn't rhyme in English though) 5:23 - Far dark blue poster on wall - "SAVE WATER!" (the rest is too compressed to read) Close light blue poster on wall - "TURN OFF THE LIGHT - THE NATIONAL (?) MONEY IS BURNING!" (don't know the _exact_ translation, I don't often get to translate the word "народные") Red poster behind counter - "HYMN" (the rest is too compressed to read, but most probably the USSR or Russia's hymn) 9:03 - Words on Snickers pack (hard to spot) - "SUPER SALE!" or "SUPER PRICE!" (not sure) Two "TODAY" newspapers - LEFT "Paying for communal apartments without a queue" (part of that text is covered, but it's most probably the same as another one you can see fully); RIGHT "Where _________" (as with the rightmost one, the rest of the newspaper is covered) More newspapers in bottom right - BOTTOM LEFT "Paying for communal apartments without a queue"; CENTER "Peaceful war: how they're using soldiers (?) _______" (rest is covered, unsure about "soldiers"); BOTTOM RIGHT "Heat tariffs have doubled" (this is Ukrainian but it was relatively simple to translate) _Note: the texture is the same on all walls and the other texture is just a bunch of ads and corporate stuff that can't be directly translated._ That's about it.

    Theory: the town had a serial killer who’d cut up some of their victims and leave one of the body parts around the map as that would be where they killed the person. The town (being aware of the serial killer) would issue a curfew while the player might arrive while the curfew is in effect as the killer is patrolling the area. The sounds could be the serial killer stalking you as you wonder around a seemingly empty town without a clue as to their killings. The body that can be found in the sewers might’ve been of someone who wanted to warn you of the killer but got killed by the killer (hence the scream). The chute might lead to the (butcher?) shop you first entered.

    Most people ( including myself) are very cautious and hesitant to explore these kinds of areas. I and some people I know and various youtubers I've watched would go "nope" and just give up, but you just hop in and get it over with. I like how your not hesitant to explore and discover eerie areas.

    The way you review these maps is actually very engaging, instead of giving a basic overlook to the details it actually does look like you strapped a gopro on your forehead and went on a journey to explore the map, I really enjoy when someone gets immersed into a map, especially when the map is so detailed and lifelike, something that the Source Engine excels at, even if it is from 2004.. The reactions are something that add to the experience, people shouldn't really be bothered by it, so I hope you'll keep exploring these awesome maps, don't let the mean comments get to you.

    You haven't been able to open doors because you were holding an item (a can, a palm). Apparently, you can't interact with doors on this map when there's something in your hand in VR. The second I saw this video I went exploring the map myself, got too scared after 15 minutes of playing (as always), and went back to watching the video. Spent a good amount of time trying to open doors while holding an orange juice from the store until I found out what was the issue.
