This format was based off "American Gladiators" in the US. It began in syndication in September 1989 with hosts Mike Adamle and Joe Theismann. Theismann would leave halfway through the season and be replaced by Todd Christensen. When the second season came along in 1990, Larry Csonka would be seen alongside Adamle. Csonka would stay on until 1993 and be replaced by Lisa Malosky. At the beginning of the last US season in 1995, Danny Lee Clark (aka gladiator Nitro) would replace Malosky. There were also two international series aired in 1995 and 1996 that were both filmed in Birmingham. Mike Adamle would fly over to co-present with one of the UK hosts, the first with John Fashanu, and the second with Ulrika Jonsson. A revival in the US aired in weekly primetime on NBC in 2008, this time being presented by Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali.

I remember this show being the centre of steroid use

Hawk's the only Gladiator from the US version.

Though this version used the Hawk name first. In fact, there were many Gladiator names that were used across various countries over the years, including Amazon, Atlas, Blaze, Cyclone, Flame, Gold, Ice, Jet, Laser, Nitro, Panther, Phoenix, Rebel, Siren, Storm, Titan, Tower, Viper, and Wolf.
