The original Gladiator 2 story was supposed to be maximus coming back to life after he was blessed by the gods. But Russell (maximus) was 100% against that idea. So the story was rewritten from scratch that's why it took so long.

Don't. There are hundreds of great films you haven't seen. I just watched Old Country for Old Men for the first time and it was so brilliant. Couldn't recommend it more (if you haven't seen it). Just look up a list of the top 100 films and see some that you've not watched. They'll be from back when Hollywood was allowed to produce good movies.

100% agree. Without being called Gladiator 2, I’d probably be mored hyped. But that movie is held in such high regard. This feels more like a movie inspired by Gladiator. I hope it’s great. The cast is stacked. When they drop a trailer with Hans’ score, maybe I’ll be more excited.

Denzel is 70 but acts like he’s still in his 30s.

The original Gladiator was damn near a perfect movie. I'm just gonna pretend that this one doesn't exist.

I wonder what the movie is about? Looks like there is no story whatsoever. There is a Coliseum doubling as an Olympic swimming pool with sharks and a war with catapults, and some guy with no parents that wants revenge for something and Denzel is there in some time travel subplot trying to hide his 20th century mannerisms. Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal seem to be the boss battle.

I already had my reservations about this movie. That ridiculous song removed any doubt. To think that a group of people actually got together and came up with this trailer, thinking it was a great idea.

Why?!? Just Why????🤷🏾‍♂️ Gladiator was a magnificent movie and probably in the top 50 if not 10 or 25 of the greatest movies of all time. I doubted G2 will be as successful and it sure as hell won't be as good🤦🏾‍♂️

Denzel starts his stopwatch and kills then all in 19 seconds

The Oscar-winning Gladiator (2000) is my favorite film of all-time. So Gladiator II has massive shoes to fill. I also love how they showed the major elements (e.g. the protagonist’s love interest dying, etc.) within this 3+ min long trailer. Trailers should only “tease”, should not spoil major plot points, and shouldn’t be longer than 2 mins. Also, glad Denzel is bringing that Alonzo “Training Day” meets Frank “American Gangster” persona… totally fits the historical accuracy and vibe of the Roman Empire… 🤦🏻‍♂️ Remember, folks… this is the same Ridley Scott who brought us post-Gladiator historical films like Robin Hood, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Napoleon, and other recent dumpster fires. In my opinion, his only solid film within the last 10~ years was “The Martian”. Here’s to hoping Gladiator is a banger of a film, despite the questionable first trailer.

It's the music that makes it strange. IMO, Denzel is in over 50% good re-watchable movies, so I am confident this will be in that range at the least.

As much as I love both Denzel & Pedro -- the simple fact is good or bad, this simply won't hold a candle to the first film.

I loved the first Gladiator movie. When I first heard about Gladiator 2 I had no excitement for it. But when I found out Denzel Washington was attached it became my most anticipated movie for this year. This trailer didn’t disappoint. Did you know that Gladiator (2000) is a remake... The original is called The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964). It's just as good as Gladiator in my opinion.

Story of the artistic inspiration behind this movie Soulless Hollywood marketing hacks: "Hey Ridley Scott. We just drove 10 trucks of money onto your property. Do you want us to move them?" Ridley Scott: "Not really, no..."

If they wanted to appeal to the nostalgia factor, they could have played the song Now we are free, which at least would have made more sense.

Not trying to bash this movie but I think the first one pretty much said it all. This seems to be like a bunch of execs were in a room and one just says, "What about a Gladiator sequel? That'll make some money."

The desperation has become physical to me at this point: I mean for decades now I've just been laughing, wincing, cringing at (but not watching) all these catastrophic blunders, so I'm sure this insane modern Western movie industry has contributed to the "crows feet" lines I have at the corners of my eyes. I'm fully enjoying the spectacle, while deeply flowing in the creative rivers of oldschool film making from around the world. I just hope I'm still alive to see the whole horrific edifice crumble and lay bare as much of the true degenerate and utter evils that we all know and loathe.

I think it will be good, maybe not as great as the first, because that came out at the right time with the right mood/acting/cast. The story in the first one was amazing. It's difficult to know if this one will live up to expectations since it was light on story and heavy on action. I really hope it lives up to the first one!

Honestly though, for a 2024 movie, this actually looks good. And Gladiator is one of my favorite movies ever.

There just doesn't seem to be any need for this movie to be called "gladiator II". They could have just had it be it's own thing and then I'd be much more open to the idea of the movie. Now I'm just looking at it wondering wtf it has to do with gladiator, and how was gladiator not a complete story? Feels like they set this movie up for failure by drawing an association.
