GIVENCHY Barbie Doll - Barbie Collector - Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

To celebrate Mr. Givenchy's 91st birthday, I'm deboxing and reviewing Givenchy Barbie, from 1999.
She is wearing a mini replica of a 1956 Givenchy Haute Couture original. Such a classy lady. Happy birthday, Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy!

LOL! Suresh darling, she's gorgeous and that hair was a trend setter! I remember the torture to get that exact look in my baby fine hair. By the time that the hairstyle had filtered down to the masses, I was in high school so I HAD to have that style of course.OMG! What we did to achieve it! First, on fresh washed hair, we applied a handful of styling gel. (Dippity Do, anybody?), then rolled the major part of our hair on orange juice cans. Why? The curlers of the day were small. Those disgusting wire and brush things you see in thrift shops? Those. So we had to invent our own. Frozen orange juice cans were the right size to get the "volume" and "lift" we needed. All of us suddenly had this urge to drink orange juice and our mothers couldn't understand why...but they got it for us. The bangs were slicked with the gel (glued to our faces) and pinned with this huge pin curl behind our ears. Then, after all that, we used those tiny little curlers to get the flip. And then? We SLEPT on this mess! Wet hair, gel, and all. You set your hair right after your bath, then sat down to watch tv...all three channels of it. Then bed. Only the rich girls had those bonnet hair dryers, the rest of us went to bed with a wet head. In the morning, we took the curlers down and started brushing that stiff mass into submission. Dried gel flew, the ridges and lumps disappeared, and we had a base. Then...we started back combing. That's a process where you deliberately put tangles into your hair for lift. Spray the tangles so they won't come out, then smooth the rest into that gorgeous style...and spray some more. That style wasn't SUPPOSED to move...and it didn't. Except my hair. I started off with a nice flip which turned into a casual upturn by the end of the day. Mine flattened out and what I started with wasn't what I had at the end of the day. We all used hairspray by the boat loads. It's no accident that fluorocarbons were banned about that time...we certainly flooded the atmosphere in our quest to get that style. Not unusual to get one or two large cans of Aquanet a week. Helmet hair? Oh yeah! You had to look picture ready at all times! Oh the things that people do to themselves in the name of fashion.

Wonderful video, and I loved all the background information on Hubert de Givenchy. I had no idea he is still with us, that's wonderful. You're making me want to get this one. I always thought she was pretty back in the day, but I was on a Vintage kick back then and didn't really collect 'new' Barbies. So I may stalk her on eBay for a bit.

FIRST! Love that your tie matches the moire panel and your jacket is velvet like her dress! This is one of my favorites from my earliest collecting days. Class and quality all the way EXCEPT that the hair was gelled beyond belief. Of course mine is still in the box, so it's nice to see her in all her glory. Thank you so much for the Givenchy history lesson as well!

Dear, she's very beautiful, the dress and jewelry are everything (after all, it's Givenchy!), even though I have to say that I find her 90's body so weird by now! Thanks for giving us some info about Monsieur Givenchy's life and career and for showing us those inspiring pictures (oh Audrey, I adore you... too much of a cliché, isn't it?!). Big big hugs!

Omg... That Edith Head ballgown in Sabrina... Omg... I bought the silkstone Sabrina a few years back and I was all she's lonely so I got the White Diamond Elizabeth Taylor and flower dress Grace Kelly, I'm pretty sure she wore that dress when she was introduced the the prince she married but only because she had nothing to wear... Anyway I noticed they never made a Marilyn Monroe silkstone but then I figured maybe because all three of them were Oscar winners lol so it's like a little Oscar winner collection... I added a Marilyn to them though lol she needed to be a part of my collection... And James Dean lol

Cherry Chanel That gown was actually not designed by Edith Head-it was a Givenchy Haute Couture original. Along with some other key pieces in the movie. However, when the movie came out, the studio didn’t credit Mr. Givenchy even though Audrey had told them that some of her wardrobe pieces were borrowed from him. Apparently, Mr. Givenchy didn’t care at all and was just happy to have made a new friend 😁
