Gigabyte M28U - The Perfect Monitor for Me!

This took what felt like months to find the right monitor for me, It was not until I got it, messed around, did I find out that the Gigabyte M28U is the perfect monitor for me. Keywords "for me". Not saying it's the perfect one for you. I hope this helps in your research!

    If you are a Mac user and you want to update the firmware, you will need a Windows laptop. At the time of this writing, that is the only way. If you do not have a Windows laptop, there might be options with Bootcamp or Parallels but I can't confirm that. Please check the internet for alternatives before buying if updating firmware is important to you.

    Thank you for this review. I've been looking everywhere for more details on the KVM functionality as I want to use this with my work laptop (1x USB C) and then switch to my Windows desktop (HDMI, USB etc) with one set of peripherals and you're the only place to have explained and show this in detail. I'll be picking this monitor up now!

    I really like your review style. It seems very balanced and as unbiased as possible. I am considering switching from my 4K 60Hz LG LG 27UK850 / BK85U to this monitor. My current monitor is fine, but now that I have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I want to take advantage of the 120Hz+ support. I also want a monitor that can be dual purpose for my gaming PC (connected via KVM). This seems to be the best "balanced" choice that checks all the boxes. One question I have - how is the text quality while running at the "More space" (and the default) display modes on your Mac? I know that non-Retina displays (even my current 4K monitor) sometimes have "jaggies" around certain text due to the lower PPI (pixels per inch) as compared to the Apple native display. However, I'm unwilling to spend $3,000 on a monitor, so I'm trying to determine if this is something I can live with for the budget price of ~$500 for the M28U. Also, I noticed this is FreeSync, but not G-Sync. My current gaming PC is running an Nvidia card, so I'm hoping it will work okay with G-Sync. Thanks again for this review. Hopefully you can see this comment and give me some insight!

    Thank you Eli. Hard in the space to give your opinions and come across as objective as possible. Try my best. Appreciate the question. I can answer your question in a few ways. Reply what I see, take a screen shot and a video. The best reply is to do the latter two and then let you decide, knowing that what you are viewing it on my skew the results. But being that I am human and therefore a hypocrite, lol, I'll toss in my perception with 51 year old eyes. I sit about 30 inches from the monitor. I normally wear glasses for distance. Without glasses and the setting at 2560X1440 or one box to the right of default, I can read text fine. Glasses, zero issues. When I goto 3840x2160 more spaces option, I need my glasses and although legible, it's a bit rough. I can make out text without glasses but I'm straining. I've never experience a high end Mac monitor, so I can't compare or answer which is better. Personally, I like $2500 extra in my pocket and if I need to move in a little closer or adjust the display, I am good. In all honesty, I've never had an issue with reading on this display. Then again, I am not pixel peeping looking for imperfections. I hope this answers your question and will do the video part later. Good luck and all the best!

    You can change the HDMI ports from 2.1 to 2.0 in the setting if needed and you can also change the size and transparency of the osd setting menu so it doesn't take up too much of the display and get in the way. When you have a laptop connected through kvm you can shut the screen and it will display the laptop screen only on the monitor but you do lose access to the keyboard and trackpad. So if your laptop has a USB type a port I suggest getting an adapter that will turn the USB type A port into at least 2 USB type A ports so you can connect a keyboard and mouse. I don't suggest using a wireless keyboard and mouse because it can mess with your laptops performance. for me connecting my Bluetooth earbuds to my chromebook causes things to start buffering. And if you want to update the monitors drivers or firmware you need a laptop or PC that runs windows 10 or higher. The base settings on the monitor aren't the best but if you adjust it yourself or watch a KZread guide it will look a lot better and the colors will really pop. The monitor does have HDR but it's only HDR 400 so it is basically a knockoff version of HDR and it's really not good. Though the main reason to get this monitor is for the 4k at 144hertz at the same time instead of having to make compromises. Everything is great about the monitor except for the HDR.

    Hi, Krazy Wabbit, thanks for your video. I've just bought a M32U lately, and when I connect my iPad Pro to the Type C port on the back of the monitor, it only charges my iPad, not bringing anything to the monitor. So I'm curious if you have a special USB C cable instead of the one that comes from the iPad box. Cheers.

  • @krazywabbit

    @krazywabbit

    Жыл бұрын

    I did consider it. I don't think it wold have taken up that much more space. If I recall from my research, there was no extra advantage of going 32 and 28 seemed to be the top end of the range that would work for my set up. If you have the space and will be sitting further back from the screen, go for it. (I am just beyond an arms length from where I set to the monitor)

    @@krazywabbit gotcha ok. Yeah I’m considering a dual monitor desk setup, and was thinking the 32” would be pretty epic with two of them (this would be for work and gaming). But that miiiight just be too much on a sit/stand desk… perhaps 28” is the better move.

    I have a Macbook air M1 ( probably going to upgrade to macbook pro later this year) and was wondering if you think this monitor would work for what I want. If i understand correctly, you connected your macbook air to the monitor using the usb c ports on both devices and that still gives you high refresh rate at 4k resolution? and does that one cable also provide enough power to charge the macbook? is it a thunderbolt cable? If so I think this would be perfect for me

  • @krazywabbit

    everything you said is correct in my setup. USB-C to USB-C cable going to MacBook. Charges and gets the 4k resolution. My only issue I've noticed (I shared this somewhere in an update) is the KVM switching to the Mac mini is a bit wonky at time. It could be my set up as I have a Mac extended keyboard and Magic Trackpad going into the M28U.

    If the image is being scaled to 1080 (default setting for 4k monitors as much as i know) on a 4K monitor to make text more accessible, would it impact the performance of the macbook ( cause i use my macbook at its peak performance very frequently and i won't need any performance issue if that impact highly on graphics components of the laptop). Maybe you can tell which is the best scaling setting for 4k 32 inch monitors on mac? also on amazon there is ARM and non ARM model of the monitor.... what does that mean?
