Giddy River (Guwatjurumurru) Campgrounds - East Arnhem Land

Guwatjurumurru (Giddy River) campground is approximately a 50km drive from the East Arnhem Land township of Nhulunbuy. After turning off the Central Arnhem Road, there is a 4WD only dirt track will take you over small creek crossings and through open bushland before arriving at the recreational areas.
The three campsites provide access to the western side of the river where you can view the beautiful waterholes, small cascading waterfalls and mini gorges. The natural beauty here is spectacular with an area of the river re-entering into the main flow over a small cascade. Downstream there is a small but impressive waterfall running into a large open river section with stunning views from the closely located campsite.
Guwatjurumurru is one of the more secluded and peaceful options in the region to camp or spend a day. There are camping areas with picnic tables and fire pits located on both sides of the river and they are within walking distance to the water.
During the monsoonal season Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation will sometimes close the area to limit environmental damage to the track and recreational areas due to excess rain and vehicle traffic.
Enjoy!
If you are heading up the Central Arnhem Road with a caravan, we recommend you make sure the below five things are checked off your list well before hitting the track.
1. Book your accommodation
a. Gove Boat Club: / goveboatclub or their new website (under development 2023) goveboatclub.com.au/ has power / water and is easily the best place to stay with a caravan in Gove.
b. Walkabout Lodge: walkaboutlodge.com.au/ if you cant get into the boat club, camping out the back (no power or water) but it is in the middle of town, good pub, but can get a bit rowdy.
2. Book your transit permit
a. Head over to www.nlc.org.au/apply-for-perm... and book for the days you intend to be on the Central Arnhem Road
3. Book your recreational permit
a. Head over to www.nlc.org.au/apply-for-perm... to book your permit for the time you are staying in East Arnhem Land (you need this to book camp sites!)
4. Book your camp sites (these book out early so don’t expect to get any of the good ones at the last minute as the locals will have already snapped them up)
a. Head over to www.dhimurru.com.au/visiting-... or
b. www.eastarnhemland.com.au/cat... if you want to book Cato - which is the only other site that allows caravans
5. Book your alcohol permit
a. Head over to nt.gov.au/law/alcohol/permits...

Thanks! It really is a cracker of a place, but still not the best East Arnhem Land has to offer! We did not see any crocs or recend slides around camp, but they will be in the deeper parts for sure. The week after we camped there, some mates were just up past Giddys at Wonga Creek and saw a 2m+ one hanging around. 🐊🐊
