Giannis Antetokounmpo - Defensive Dynamo 16/17

Спорт

Giannis Antetokounmpo became the first player in NBA history to finish in the top 20 in total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. In leading his team in each major statistical category, he joined the likes of Dave Cowens, Scottie Pippen, Kevin Garnett, and LeBron James (since the league began recording blocks and steals in the 1973-74 season, that is) as the only players to have ever done so. He had a career year, and with the SOLE exception of his 3 point percentage, he had career best numbers across the board. At any given time, he can be found playing or defending any position on the floor, and that versatility has buoyed not only his Most Improved Player campaign, but also shows the league flashes of a future Most Valuable Player.
Giannis has pretty much shown the world that, at least in these playoffs, he’s one of the top 5 players in the East. Obviously, defensive statistics aren’t always telling of a player’s true value, but given that you just have to watch a game to know that he passes the eye test, I’ll present the stats anyway: Giannis is 4th in the league in Defensive Box Plus/Minus, behind guys like Draymond Green and Rudy Gobert, he’s ranked higher in defensive win shares than 2 former Defensive Players of the Year (Dwight Howard and Marc Gasol), and his block percentage is just beneath rugged rim protectors like Gobert, Anthony Davis, and Hassan Whiteside. He finished with more total blocks than Draymond, DeAndre Jordan, Kristaps Porzingis, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Again, these are pretty impressive numbers on their own, but he lines up at times as the Milwaukee Bucks’ practically 7 foot point guard. Add to that the fact that he’s only 22 years old, and that makes for a frighteningly ferocious future for the Greek Freak.

He's one of those once in a lifetime players for sure, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes down as one of the best players of all time once his career is over

King Phil Never said he was, I'm just acknowledging that he's a special player who's already putting up historic numbers. I don't think there's ever been a 6ft 11 guard who can dribble, pass, defend and score like him so if he isn't once in a lifetime then what is?

@@kingphil4073 Of course he's not Michael Jordan...He's Giannis Antetokounmpo, his own type of player. That is exactly what a once in a lifetime player is. That's why you can't compare guys like Michael Jordan or Kareem Abdul Jabbar because they are unique just like Giannis can't be compared. I'm sure you already changed your opinion since this was 3 years ago...

That play against the Warriors at the end of the video is stupid crazy. How many guys in the league can do that? Rotate to the roll man and stop him before he gets into the restricted area to score, he tosses a lob, then Giannis pivots, turns and recovers and blocks Draymond finishing the oop. That is fucking unbelievable and I don't think people understand how crazy that is. Anthony Davis might be the only person in the NBA with that kind of quickness, length, and explosiveness. I guess Lebron could do that too but still, not many players are capable of that. Maybe AD, Bron, KD and that's about it

Giannis has developed very well for yet another season. Got some more lean muscle weight without losing explosiveness, balance or speed, learned how to play in a more physical way both in offense and defense, and is much more difficult to guard now, than last year. The team has started to properly incorporate his physical attributes into half court strategy too. Due to the penetration danger that Giannis presents, opposing teams have to either give him space for rim protection or to double team. The Bucks are starting to use this to their advantage, with Giannis forcing the double team to expose an unopposed assist to the perimeter. The next stage is to eliminate the space given by the opposing defense, by having Giannis develop a dependable JS from range. I'm pretty sure that Giannis is going to focus on this during the off-season. And if he masters it, he will be a truly terrifying all around player. With no weaknesses left.

Sometimes if you watch the Bucks games he seems like he "smells" the block coming and he explodes in the air to block the shot some of his block are even surprising his own teammates with the way he waits patiently until the last second to jump in order to maximize the possibility of getting the block it's clear as day how hard he worked on his rim protection he isn't just an athletic freak of a human being he is putting in the work every fucking day. Also he is one of the most humble guys in the league so props to you Giannis and thank you for giving us Bucks fans hope again:)

if gobert is getting consideration for dpoy for being a rim protector, how is giannis not in the conversation? he is the 2nd most versatile defender in the league, only trailing draymond.

Do you know what the word versatile means? Draymond Green is much better at guarding PFs and Cs than Kawhi. He also does a pretty good job on the perimeter when they switch. Draymond is definitely a more versatile defender than Kawhi Leonard.
