You know you wrote a good song when James Hetfield sits in the audience as a normal fan and headbanging to the riff in the intro 🤘. He also played it live in Metallica:s warm up area backstage later on. Quite cool when you think that Tobias came up with the riff when he was at the playground swinging his kids 😃

The song peaked at number 4 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, and won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2016.

A true classic Ghost song. You are correct the album version of the song does not end the way this video does. Hopefully they do play it live when you go. It is a fun song live. They played it last year when I got to see them.

Thanks for this one, David 🙂 IMHO one of the best Ghost songs out there. Cirice has that magic combination of excellent riffs and "OMPF".. that you describe as "marching", together with beautiful silent parts of vocal and keys. Each in themselves magic, but the different styles just enhances each other perfectly. Given that the title means Church in Old English, I lean to the text as describing the unhealthy relationship between the religion and a person in the congregation.. Basically the song is about how the Church emotionally manipulates people in the congregation into feeling sinful, lost and powerless without it.. which trust me, it absolutely does. We are commanded to be "sick" and at the same time handed "the cure" of salvation.. "Can't you see that you're lost without me".. Just reeling it in.. What would you do if you left the religion, because you are certainly lost. Others have also stated that the lyrics can be interpreted as an abusing relationship between people.. And I can also see that angle. But as I mentioned.. due to title, I lean to the religion vs. people story. David... you are now more than ready for "Twenties" from the "Impera" album.. Please have a go at it, for a total metal surprise! Thanks again for the video 🤘

Twenties needed time for me to click especially since it was released as single after Sunshine and got me confused. But after 3rd listen of it, it skyrocketed to top 3 Ghost songs, so so good, I can't get enough of it.

I've been waiting for this review for a long time - Ghost's best song IMO. Definitely deserving of the 9s.

yeah the end resolves in the actual song rather than the music vid. The name Cirice is a play on words between Clarice from Silence of the Lambs (see the cover art on the single to see why).. and it also means "church" in Old English Great reaction, cheers 👻

WOW! like I wasn't into this kind of "rock/metal" but after this show and seeing Eddie live I found a brand new appreciation made me go back to old Metallica, Megadeath, Dio, Slayer. Ghost was awesome I loved their set and ambience

The album track ends better than the music video.

love that you caught that ride symbol during the organ break. itself sounds like it's descending in pitch because of the instrumentation. for this one i feel like the music video makes this song.

21:32 You're absolutely right, David That's actually not how this song ends on the actual album. And, I also dislike how music videos alter the song's format for the sake of the music video, for which there's a number of songs that the version of the song in the video is totally different from the original recording, such as "The Final Countdown" by Europe

Great review. I can respect when people don't like Ghost, but no one should say they/he isn't a brilliant songwriter and performer. Ghost has an extremely high bar or quality on all fronts.

It's hard to imagine that Ritual wasn't on the 'must listen' list he was given.

This song won a Grammy.

The best moment of the song is for me the extra 2/4 bar in the chorus after two 4/4 bars ("in your heart"). Sometimes it's the little things that make the song. This was the track that finally made me fall in love with Ghost. And of course the intro riff already got me hooked as an old Slayer fan.

I guessed 9.2. Yeah, that's the thing with Ghost, lots of quite simple stuff, but unique stuff and lots of great melodies

I love that you are going deeper into Ghost catalogue, can´t wait for next song reaction

Yeah, I wish the request had been something other than the music video. But it's cool to get the breakdown for the song anyway; I didn't think about that little buzz on the ride before.

There is nothing "accidental" in Ghost. Or predictable. Eventually you will hear enough Ghost to where it doesn't surprise you anymore, you'll just anticipate it.

Do anyone else agree that the intro for this song, he is and darkenss at the heart is very inspired by iron maiden and Metallica? Iron maiden pops up very often for me at least when these song starts

It pretty much ends that way. It's not way different than the studio version there is like one more down beat that rings out but nothing too crazy that will change your opinion.

Thanks. If you would let us hear your bass as you are figuring out riffs would be very interesting - just clean, no effects needed. Your points about the riff and incidentals would be interesting to understand better for us non-musicians and amateurs. But, it IS your show. :) Thanks again.
