I went to my first Ghost ritual last week. Can confirm, was screaming the entire time 🤣. This song is epic live. Screaming “Hail Satan” when you were raised in a stifling evangelical home is SUPER cathartic. 😜

I don't think they mispronounced Belial, the way it is pronounced in this song is how I would guess it would sound in Latin or Hebrew. The fact that they also use "Satanas" instead of satan seems to support this.

Yes, Behemoth is a creature from the Old Testament, but in Hebrew mythology, it was basically a generic name for any big, powerful demon. The song itself, is about the coming of the Antichrist. It, and the chants in particular, represent a ritual bringing about his coming. It is supposed to help you visualize the Satanic Church (in Tobias Forge's eyes) in an actual ritual worshipping him and his arrival.

There is no mispronounced words in Latin here. Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas and Lucifer are all names of Christianitys imaginary foes, and Tobias Forge is way to much aware AND on a mission with this project of his to anglofy the names just to please the masses. I'm not sure I agree with your assumption that most of their fans are unaware of wtf they're singing along with/to. As a mom to a teenager who found Ghost when they (my child, not ghost...) were 13 years old, turning 16 this November, I couldn't have asked for a better contemporary band to start their musical journey with! It's like kicking in open doors to get free for grabs-opportunities to discuss music; the way it developes through time and space; the impact music have on society, both right now and throughout the history of man. Plus I've gotten the chance to discuss what organized religion does to us, the masses, with my child. How many of us parents have had that luxury, hm? Doesn't matter what religion, but some of them are very much guilty to why there's still such a concept as what we as a western society call "third world countries"... That's what colonialism is all about, and the way Ghost almost forces their hard-core fans to read up on what we've done to the rest of the world in the name of some long time dead guy, just by chanting the names of frog princes and what not, haha! 😹 But ofc there's plenty of brain dead people on any given Ghost gig who would chant along to pretty much anything their parents doesn't agree with just to annoy their mom and dad or whomever they're trying to revolt against. But since I've got the rare opportunity to actually listen to kids discussing Ghost, and what their lyrics might be about... In all honesty it gives me at least some hope for the future. Because don't forget that Tobias Forge isn't you're average "Meh, I feel stuff...meh"-Angry White Guy. He's a heterosexual, married, ordinary looking middle aged dad from Sweden. With brains and a need to play dress up while making people chant names for Christian make believe-foes. In Latin. While performing awesome music and putting on a kick ass-show. Ha! 😹 Much love From STHLM, Sweden

Funny you mention "subdivision", one of Tobias' previous bands is Subvision! And btw, most likely not mispronunciations of the names. I think they pronounce it in italian or maybe latin (they use such lines in a couple songs), which ties in with the band lore, an inverse of Catholic Church with anti-popes.

Very curious to hear your opinion on Ghost- Mary on a cross (studio version) I'm a pretty big Ghost enjoyer, and Year Zero is one of my least fav tbh (Except the verse's which kick ass, but I don't care for the chorus)), but Ghost has a TON of really really good tracks. Some recs for you to see their wide range of styles: Ritual Zombie Queen He Is Pro Memoria Darkness At The Heart Of My Love One from each album. (They also have a cover of Iron Maiden - Phantom Of The Opera released quite recently if you're in to that)

That's crazy. An ex girlfriend introduced me to Ghost and I straight up told her the opposite; I could listen to the choir part(s) for the duration of the song and the rest could be removed and I'd be fine. Of course, I actually really enjoy this full song. Saw it live and it was one of the hypest the crowd got and we/they were into the setlist.

ohh as yu alrady lived it this song in concert just kicks in! and It still makes me laugh how many people takes Ghost's "satanic" visuals so seriously. Is so obvious It's a Glam band and being (pop)metal they will take catolic/christian elements, I would never expect anyone to be "shocked" by their lyrics or think of them as "fordibben" to me their aesthetic is pretty "halloween-esque" and it's pretty obvious they're a parody. It also is amazing to me how many english speakers think people have such little knowledge about demonoly, , here where I live and was born: méxico, and all latin america in general (being a highly catholic area) we know those figures even before we are born (way of speaking) I thought was the same over there having christianity so enganged. I'm not talking about you since I know you understand Ghost now better that you went to the concert and all, and you saw all the lore and story they do. and I do enjoy all your reactions ! but it still is funny to me how many reactors do see the "satanic" in ghost specifically as if was intented to shock. I've seen pastors who call them "glam rock bands" and compare them to twisted sisters and identify "they're just having fun", obviously theres others who think they're serious. but yeah. I always find funny how with so many metal bands who also call for satanism Ghost is the one who is being taken so seriously XD or maybe I just normalized too much all these storytelling stuff as I am a nerd comic artist lol
