This is Ghost's most ABBA-metal song. This was from 2018, their 4th album, so they had a lot more budget for video's and production. The plague doctor masks are part of the theme of that album - plague/death. Which was pre-COVID. Cheesy, but it's supposed to be fun (which you get). Note that the words for the chorus are "I wanna be-witch you"..

Keep in mind when you hear this song, this is from a plague-themed album. With that in mind, from an interview with Tobias Forge about the song: As Tobias Forge remarked, “Europe was in this turmoil in the late 1340s. The plague is extremely fast. It starts off as the worst flu you’ve ever had and then it just goes worse and then you’re dead after three days. So people were lying in the streets - corpses and all the surroundings were just falling apart. All the brothels and pubs were thriving because people started partying literally like there was no tomorrow because they were gonna die. They were just going for it.” Laughingly, he said, “Dance Macabre is capturing that joyous nocturnal sort of life in a disco song.” Certainly not their best song, but it is super catchy! Their most recent full length album is based off of classic 80's arena rock anthems. (Watcher In The Sky, Darkness At The Heart Of My Love, Griftwood, Respite On The Spitalfields). You should also make sure to listen to "Ritual" off of their first album for a little context of where the band started (saw them open for Mastodon in 2012 and they only had "Opus Eponymous" to pull from). Ritual is a song them almost always play live, it's an early banger for sure. And of course, have a great time at the show!

My personal belief is that part of the genius of Ghost is that they have touched all the bases in fact of sounds. They have songs like Mummy Dust and Con Clavi Con Dio which not many might like and then these pop and disco songs that are total earworms. And then ballads like He Is. There is something for every one.

Just an FYI On the LA show; It is rumoured that the last LA show will be a "Ritual Show". This is in Ghost Lore, the show where a new papa takes place, meaning Tobias Forge will evolve into a new character DURING the show. It is not certain it will happen, but it is likely as LA is the final MAJOR city for the 2023 run of tours. So it would be very cool if you were able to watch that, as it is a very rare event!

It's of course cheesy on purpose, I mean the twist in the lyrics "I wanna bewitch you" is a genius in a teenage kind of way. But if you really want to hear the musical genius of Forge I'd suggest the instrumental "Helvetesfonster". The outro melody of that song is I think on the level of any great seventies prog band. Absolutely beautiful, one of the best melodies I've heard in my entire life.

Tobias doesn’t see ghost as metal, but more as a show. At one point he tried to sell in ghost as a theater show. He also views making records and live performances as two different things. He writes new songs with old records and songs in mind for the shows to feel like a good show.

To put it short, the base of Ghost is to spread evil through catchy songs. There is an entire self written lore behind ghost that spans back to 1969. Each character has “their thing.” Copia, or Papa IV, was known for being blingy & 80s centric, CHEESY. They release little clips around eaxh character & the story line to promote tours & albums. Such an interesting way to handle it, I’ve always loved it. If you get the time, please check out some lore videos, it will ALL make sense.

I guess this is the only dance song you will hear from Ghost. But Why does it sound like this? While it is on the album Prequelle, which is about the black plague in the 1300's. Dance macabre is a classic orchestra work from a composer named Saint-Saëns and is about dancing with the devil. So, in this case, it has to be dance music! 😀. And dance music it is! A fun fact is that in this video a lot of rock musicians are present, if you can spot them. Charlie Benante and Phil Anselmo from Pantera, Kirk Hammet from Metallica a long with a lot of American sport stars and actors/actresses.

This was the very first song I ever heard by Ghost on the radio and I just couldn't get over how catchy it was and how much I loved the lead vocalist. It felt like I had been transported to the 80's the first time I heard it. So I finally looked them up and was actually really glad this was my first introduction to ghost. Because every song I listened to after it just kept getting better and better and better. I think the point of this song is to be a fun hook to get you to dance and forget your problems so the monsters can eat you. It's mindless fun. 😄

Been waiting for this one, David 🙂 Just going to give you some Ghost lore to hang this one on.. This one is from the "Prequelle" album.. and the theme of the album is the black plague.. the pandemic that killed around 25 million people in Europe. The disease was spread both from human to human.. and by animals (mostly rats.. Remember "Rats"? 😉). When people thought they were most certainly going to die of the plague, they partied and danced like there literally were no tomorrow. That is described as a dance macabre.. Looking at the lore and history of ghost, this allegedly shows the first meeting back in the 70:s between Sister Imperator and Papa Nihil, the first ever Ghost vocalist.. That's why the feel of the song is well rooted in 70:s sound and disco. It's most definitely got to do with the drums and the tambourine 😀 The meeting must be arranged somehow.. As you can see in the opening scene.. The guy at the door is quite dismissive.. until he realizes that the person to his right is actually the guy supposed to become Papa Nihil. So he states "We've been expecting you".. Sister Imperator, waiting patiently.. recognizes Papa, and connects with him.. She gives Papa his first skull paint during the party, and as you can see she knocks Papas left eye white which becomes the well known feature of all the Papa characters.. Being their first meeting.. also explains the "The beginning" line at the end of the video. And of course, Baphomet came to witness the whole ceremony... Thanks for the video! 🤘

Your right about Tobias's voice. I cant imagine anyone else singing Ghost songs. He has such clean vocals. Someone else has said he sounds like a dark angel and i totally agree 💯. I remember an interview i listened to where Tobias was still forming the "band" and he was saying we don't have a singer yet to the label execs and they told him...basically...it was him as they liked what they heard from him. Tobias is like...the opportunities are lining up and am I going to die on this hill or run with it. He ran with it. Thank goodness or he could've ended up still working in a call center.

So I’ve been binging on your reaction videos to ghost all morning and I just wanted to share a few opinions of mine about Dance Macabre: - I think they’re in Louisiana and not Los Angeles (LA) given the blood sucking. -when that “creepy” guy answered the door, my first thought was that this was a Halloween or costume party (the first guys resembled Greasers). -seeing the dancers dressed as plague doctors further reinforced my suspicion that this was a Halloween event. -I really like how much analysis that you have done for every part of every single song; it’s very informative and interesting. -the blood orgy at the end was definitely a signature of Ghost’s theatrics

Also, he says, "I want to bewitch you" not be with you. That intro music that fades in with the saxophone is a real song they also play live. Keep an eye out for it at the show.

I genuinely don't understand why the poppiness and near-disco style are to be excused in the first place. I truly fail to grasp what's potentially bad with a pop song, and especially a disco (which is one of the best genres ever) song, if there is some intent behind it and not just a random chord progression that sounds good

If you mean reactions, he did one for Square Hammer.

Really sort of misses the point to take these songs without the intention behind why they all sound as they do. To criticize this song as a dance song, when it was literally the intention, is eye rolling. Hah. Everyone would do great to forget genre constraints and expectations with Ghost.

My least favorite Ghost song, but still catchy as heck.

The most comercial Ghost´s song... There are a lot of better songs to react, specially in the two first albums. Such a pitty... This was the time that the band started to point to a more comercial public.

I mean..the fake lore of the band is that they are trying to spread their evil religion to the world through their catchy songs. Mission accomplished. On a side note, this will likely be in the encore and it slaps live, but almost all their songs slap live. Get ready to have your taint tickled and your ass wobbled.
