German-Built Howitzers Pound Russian Targets In Ukraine

We joined a Ukrainian Army crew manning a German Panzerhaubitze 2000, a self-propelled, long-range howitzer, as it opened fire on Russian positions. After firing a salvo, the crew hid the weapon system among trees and broken branches. They said Russian drones were hunting the howitzers.

I grew up near Bergen, one of the biggest training fields for the"Panzer-Brigade" and went to bed while they were shooting projectiles over my head just to hit a target 40 to 60 km away. There's a reason German weapons and engineering are a thing. There are three places in the world where you can depend on quality steel enough to literally stake your own life on it: Japan, the USA, and Germany. Germany was also a major innovator during the Second World War. Say what you want about the many evil things that regime did - including slave labor in the factories - but the actual engineering and improvement of weapons was second to none. Now their assembly lines weren't as efficient as those elsewhere, and that's partly why they weren't able to make equipment in numbers, but the actual designs tended to be machines that functioned remarkably well. Artillery pieces like the FlaK36 "88" anti-aircraft gun (and it's 128mm counterpart), tanks like the Pz IV and StuG III, fighters like the Bf109 and the Fw190, and of course small arms like the MP40, MG34, and MG42. The MG42 is objectively one of the best firearms ever made. It's so good that we are STILL producing new weapons that are based on, or descended from, its design. Every video game about the second world war almost always has at least one scene (but usually several) where that weapon in particular plays a significant role. The MG3 was based on it, nations all over Europe copied it, and even we Americans took design elements from it and based the M60 GPM off of it. According to "Forgotten Weapons", the combined Allied effort to play down the effectiveness of the MG42 largely failed "because it really was an excellent gun". Now with all of that in mind, and that last sentence in particular, apply all of that to the PzH 2000. It's technically the same caliber as most other NATO artillery pieces. We have the M777 Howitzer and the M109 Paladin. The M777 is the fixed variant, and the M109 would be the American equivalent to the PzH 2000. Both fit into the category of mobile artillery. However (and I'm drawing info from wikipedia, so forgive me for doing so but this also isn't a scholarly article) the PzH 2000's range is SIGNIFICANTLY longer than the M109: 42 miles vs 19 miles for the RAP (rocket assisted projectile). I do not know the PzH2k's range with the Excalibur munition, but I do know the M109's is 25 miles. Even that is sill much less. The Paladin uses a 23 caliber barrel, while the 2k uses a 52 caliber barrel. The overall length of a barrel is its bore diameter in millimeters divided by its caliber, which gives a length of 3565mm for the Paladin and 8,060mm for the 2000. That's an 11'8" barrel on the Paladin compared with 26'5" for the 2000. The extraordinarily large barrel allows much more time for compressed ignition gases to exert pressure behind the projectile which increases its muzzle velocity and therefore its range. In addition, its chrome-lined, laser-hardened barrel allows it to briefly sustain an extremely high rate of fire, famed for being able to fire 3-4 shots in 10 seconds. Indeed, in the video below, you can witness one firing three shots in 10 seconds by its Dutch crew. I'm hazarding a guess if they were in a more serious situation they would be moving with an even greater sense of urgency. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqVn2KR7Z8e0p9Y.html Long range, high rate of fire, and high accuracy thanks to both its own guidance and - where possible - use of the Excalibur GPS-guided munitions. These make the PzH 2000 the best self-propelled artillery piece in existence. And Ukraine now has enough of these to outfit an entire artillery brigade. And also serving as a wonderful complement to their HIMARS and M270 MLRS rocket launchers.

Junk military hardware and a complete myth about German quality. Unreliable and did not work in extreme weather. They lost WW2 to superior Russian equipment and weaponry and to the bravery of the Russian soldier. Germans were cowards and inferior to an army of equal strength. All they knew was to retreat and surrender. Unworthy to be called soldiers.

PZH has the highest rate of fire, best armor and will be therefore the closest to the frontline. Theoretically. As counter artillery battery, the Caesar or DANA will do the same job - likely less maintenance. But in average at a higher distance to target. If that works, its the better sysetm for that "counter" job.

We should defenetly send the Leopard 1. Ukraine already operates the Gepard in small numbers and the gepard is based on the same chasis so there should be at least some mechanics who are already familiar enough. Leopard 1s can be used by reserve troops stationed at the belorussian border to free up ukrainain armored units to fight in the donbas, meanwhile the crews can get familiar with leopard 1 and in case russia would try another invasion from Belarus for some reason (highly unlikely) the leopard 1s should a very powerfull defensive weapon. The Leopard 1A5 comes with laser warning reciver, thermal sights, good fire controll system, very good mobility and most importantly it only weighs 44 tons which means it can cross Ukrainian bridges (60 ton Leopard 2 or Abrams are too heavy). Also leopard 1 uses the NATO standard L7 gun which means it can use NATO 105mm ammunition. The U.S. could supply M900 APFSDS shells for the Leopard 1s, which are depleted uranium shells which can punch threw any russian tank from the front.

@@jakobc.2558 If you want to kill them - do so. Outdated, no stabilized gun, no real all weather target aquisition - its lacking proper traing likely less effective than the "well known" T64. IMHO. And rather than a few guepards you have then to maintain a fleet of these chassis types. By the way, its a similar chassis and not the same. Guepards hull is a bit stretched. What Ukraine needs - counter Artillery radar and good long-range AA against the remaining cruise missiles.

Ukraine is mainly firing German DM121 boat tail unguided high explosive shells with an official range of circa 30 kilometers at which about 85% land within the area of a soccer field. They also have an unknown number of SMArt 155 shells which contain two submunitions that are released over the target area. They rotate whilst descending on a small parachute and scan with radar and infrared for targets like tanks within a radius of circa 150 meters. If a target is detected the submunition fires an explosively formed penetrator at it to destroy the target.

The netherlands have clearly given up on having an independently run and independently combat-ready army, which makes giving up some of their most valuable assets a lot less of an issue as they have much less strict operational requirements for their armed forces than most other countries. Meanwhile Germany just announced a complete renewal of their capabilities with 2% of the GDP spent on it per year as the legal minimum, 100 billion euros as a special fund to fix some of the most glaring issues ASAP and the intention to expand and improve the armed forces in general, which makes giving away howitzers like that a much bigger deal. In short: Context matters.

Great to see people finally accept what we from Germany have done - yes too slow and too few but when it arrived it’s 110% - now it’s snot the logistics of new barrels and ammunition plus service The Ukrainians can shoot for sure and when trained can service and repaired it for sure too The 100 units order should be first supplied with 20 from the German army units and these replaced by new ones. Thereafter rolling deliveries with parts to Ukraine - they should keep those in the field now plus the next 20 from the Bundeswehr as a big thankyou. Once two full batteries are in operation 28-30 units then it’s about service and parts new barrels and munitions- supply and logistics are the key Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
