ABOUT THE MOVIE
The story follows teenagers Paul Bäumer and his friends Albert and Müller, who voluntarily enlist in the German army, riding a wave of patriotic fervor that quickly dissipates once they face the brutal realities of life on the front. Paul's preconceptions about the enemy and the rights and wrongs of the conflict soon crumble. However, amid the countdown to the armistice, Paul must carry on fighting until the end, with no purpose other than to satisfy the top brass' desire to end the war on a German offensive.
In spring 1917, three years into the First World War, 17-year-old Paul Bäumer enlists in the Imperial German Army alongside his school friends, Albert Kropp, Franz Müller and Ludwig Behm. They listen to a patriotic speech by a school official and unknowingly receive uniforms from soldiers killed in a previous battle. After they are deployed in Northern France near La Malmaison, they are befriended by Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky, an older soldier. Their romantic view of the war is shattered by the realities of trench warfare on the Western Front and Ludwig is killed by artillery the first night.

This scene feels so real. When the two soldiers win the close quarter firefight and then stop to eat amidst the battle it really shows you how starved/deprived they are - especially since that drive manifested in the middle of combat with heaps of adrenaline running through their bodies.

@@Rambonii it's harder than you think to aim a single-shot bolt-action rifle when your hands are shaking from fear and adrenaline. It's pretty much the entire reason we started inventing sub-machine guns and later Assault Rifles. Plus, it's a movie. You can’t really criticize the Hollywood music part when honestly- the soundtrack in this movie leaves ALOT to be desired. It’s just this one electronic tone that makes it sound like some video game. The movie is great don’t get me wrong- but music’s role in conveying suspense, seriousness, etc. wasn’t utilized to its fullest extent here.

Wow the close combat in this scene is so gritty and real. The chaos, the smoke, artillery, the confusion, the soldiers shooting and stabbing each other at close range, checking around every corner for enemies. It truly does justice to what the troops on the ground must've seen 100+ years ago. However, no movie can portray the true horrors of war unless you've actually experienced it.

Er schwor sich, dass das in einem späteren Krieg nie mehr so laufen darf. An die Macht gelangt, rüstete er bald die deutsche Panzerwaffe auf. I woulda taken that dead officers pistol ( 0:26 ) in a trench fight where everyone is using bolt action rifles, an auto-loading pistol that you can get multiple shots off with quickly comes in handy big time. In the same time it’d take him to get two shots off with the Mauser, he could have gotten at least 4-5 shots off with the pistol and in a trench fight where you’re facing multiple enemies who are really close to you, that can really make the difference between you either getting shot/bayoneted/bludgeoned or making it back out of that trench alive…

Only German officers, nco’s, and Stormtroop units (towards the end of WWI) were issued sidearms. If Paul took that Luger, and some officer or nco caught him with that, he would have been shot for looting. If it wasn’t issued to you, it’s not yours. German’s are sticklers for the rules.

The German Attack, also known as the German Offensive, was a significant military operation conducted by the German Empire during World War I. It specifically refers to the series of attacks launched by the Germans on the Western Front in 1918. After years of stalemate and trench warfare, the German High Command planned a major offensive in an attempt to break the deadlock. The operation was called Operation Michael and began on March 21, 1918. The German Attack aimed to achieve a decisive victory by launching a massive assault on the British and French forces, hoping to drive them back and force them to surrender. The offensive was initially successful, catching the Allies off guard and pushing them back several kilometers. However, the German advance eventually slowed down due to logistical issues and overstretched supply lines. The Allied forces regrouped, and with the arrival of American troops, they were able to mount a successful defense. The Battle of Amiens, which took place from August 8 to 11, 1918, marked a turning point in the German Offensive. The Allies launched a surprise attack, employing innovative tactics such as the use of tanks and aircraft. The battle resulted in a significant loss for the Germans, and their offensive momentum was halted. The German Attack and subsequent battles, depicted in Erich Maria Remarque's novel "All Quiet on the Western Front," highlight the brutal realities of warfare. The novel portrays the experiences of German soldiers on the Western Front, capturing the horrors, futility, and dehumanizing effects of war. Overall, the German Attack was a critical phase of World War I, but despite initial success, it ultimately failed to achieve its objectives. The German offensive was eventually pushed back, leading to the eventual Allied victory and the end of the war.

nah, that's a common view of trench warfare but a generally incorrect one. taking the first few trench lines wasn't the hardest part of an attack, holding them against enemy counterattacks was. no man's land provided cover for attacking soldiers (who generally did not sprint at machine guns, but moved from cover to cover in squads and used suppressing fire), but it was extremely difficult to move supplies and heavy weapons up through the mud. meanwhile, the defenders had prepared supply routes (communication trenches and railways), artillery dug-in out of the enemy's range, and a bunch of other advantages to retake the lost trenches.

Imagine, running out in the cold of the battlefield, from the trenches into No Man’s Land. Feet feeling wet and soggy, running forward across uneven scared land. Others collapsing from the endless fray of fire from the opposition. Moving with the rifle, taking the aim into the nothingness that might hit something in the sheer chaos, getting up and moving. Mud in the boots, tired with adrenaline, diving into the opposition’s trench to bring them down with the bayonet if you don’t get it yourself. To somehow make the run back across No Man’s Land with the company of men who did their duty to. To escape the possible bullet with your name on it as you run back into your trench from the long haul across. Happy to live until you turn back, and see the repeat. The opposition doing the same. As the Allied machine gun posts start firing. The Allies are on the defensive, the opposition is on the offensive. If you live through this day, there is tomorrow. But as you take aim at the one man running across the scared desolate land of No Man’s Land, you sight in as the front of German men run closer, Allied machine guns on overtime pushing the fray of bullets towards of front of men. Not one man from either side actually WANTS to be out there, rather just taking the orders, from the leaders, for most aren’t doing the “dirty work”. -Absolute respect to the men who survived who survived to tell the tale. From either side, pre-WW2. This was carnage to the most extreme no modern action movie can capture, yet this was truly real as well as surreal. Yet, what is happening in the modern battlefields of Europe in Ukraine with Russia right now in 2023, this has become the Chapter 3 of humanity’s World Wars. World War 1 was Chapter 1 110+ years ago, the American Civil War was just the Prologue. God help us. 🇺🇸

For Germany to have won first instead of invading France, Germany should have invaded Russia first and only protect the border with France using trenches for that there Germany It could move forward in Russia as it would take a long time for Russia to move its troops months go by and Germany dominates more and more territories in the Russian empire Then after having defeated Russia, then yes, Germany could focus all its forces on France, another thing that should have changed is that the Hungarian stars should have given that territory to For Italy, I think, yes, Germany would be able to win a partnership treaty, so Germany would annex several territories, it would take 1/3 of Africa, it would take several territories in France would annex Belgium colony Lithuania Estonia Latvia Poland Belarus Ukraine and Finland would become German-influenced vassal states Now austria hungary would annex serbia and montenegro but actually using their hungarian was in a dire situation i bet they would last until the 30's until the empire fell to the ottomans Azerbaijan Armenia Georgia It would become a vassal of the Roman Empire in addition to taking almost the entire Middle East and that's all Russia was most screwed in this war, which basically lost a lot of territories to Germany And for the Ottoman Empire the United Kingdom was also going to get screwed together with France they should pay very high reparations to Germany we would probably see an independent India soon in the 30's and an independent India would probably roll a second column from Paris in France after the great depression and the German empire being the greatest world power the United States with the Its big defeat would be more isolationist along with the Russian empire too, tomorrow it would help in the Russian civil war and probably the whites would win because the German empire and there were the Bolsheviks as a risk to the empire and yes the empire of Brazil was going to come back
