    This scene is hard to watch because it shows their awareness. They are aware of the fact that if they use their guns, they’d reveal their position and get shot, so they agree to silently engage each other to the death. Why not have the awareness to realize that your government is using you as a pawn. Young men from England and Germany aren’t my enemies, I don’t know them, they’ve never wronged me. It’s truly sad.

    even if they knew they are pawns.What could they do?Start a coup? a revolution?Too unrealistic.Most of them would probably just try to survive the harsh conditions of the trenches and hope to God they live for another day.

    God, this is probably one of my favorite melee fight scenes in any movie. It just checks all the boxes for me. -All fighters are skilled, the baddies aren't just fodder and pose a real threat -Theres no over the top music, most of the scene is just the sounds of combat with the score rising with the tension -The camera isn't constantly changing angles and zooming in, I can actually see what's happening -I just really like the ascetic of ww1 trench raiders, that was the only reason I liked this scene, everything I said before this was filler I pulled out of my ass, but it's still true.

    It’s… really not that deep. Would be nice if it were, but it’s simple pragmatism. Both sides know full well that, if they were to attract the attention of either side’s machine gunners, they’d be dead men (machine guns are already not great at distinguishing friend from foe, and in this darkness even less so). It’s literally a matter of “Everyone calm down; we all know that if we don’t settle this quietly, we’re all dead”

  • @epluribusunum5318

    @epluribusunum5318

    @xanderlowe1543 They agreed to fight with knifes because they know if they make any noise their allies in the trenches are gonna killed them with machine guns. There's nothing friendly or brotherly about it. Each side was sent to raid the other sides trenches and kill the sleeping soldiers, they were unaware their enemy had the same idea, they met in the middle, realized that shooting at each out would cause exactly what happens after the pistol is shot to happen.

    @@deceitfulwizard7969 well except these are stormtroopers, soldiers who are more skilled and efficient at storming trenches before the main assault so these men know how and when to use gas masks. they are trying to be silent while crawling through no mans land so why some of them would be wearing a mask that make quite a bit of noise when breathing doesn`t make sense, and noise in the dark travel far and the tiniest noise gives away your location. these are men who have been at war for quite some times and been trained for the jobs they are tying to perform, the cloaks are perfect for their mission as it kind of makes it hard to see a person in a blanket compared to looking a dark dirt. so in summary: these aren`t your regular infantry who might be scared that a night time gas attack is coming, these are trained trench raiders who are "experts" on conducting trench raiding to disrupt or cause confusing in the ranks of the enemy. they know/should know that they have to keep noise to a bare minimum so putting on a gas mask that causes your breathing to make more noise when you try to be quiet and your life is at death`s door the entire time. they know when to use their gas masks and this was not that time, and they should know it. this does not mean that i think the stormtroopers were fearless elite soldiers, but that trained specially troops knew when to use their mask. doing a nighttime raid mission where the slightest Nosie gets you killed, and the fact not all of the stormtroopers were wearing their gas masks, so their sgt or similar would tell the men not to use the gas mask as i would get them killed. all in all its just a movie thing to make the enemy seem scary and faceless guys who is just a faceless thing with no feelings. well except that one guy who got his mask removed.

    Ok, there are a lot problems in this scene: helmets without cloth covers shining in the moonlight, pointless gas mask, mp18 in the middle of 1916... But who cares, it's still an amazing scene, and I love it.

    Yeah it's a good scene though the concept that a side would send out a raid and not alert their own sentrys is a bit of a stretch, mildly unrealistic tbh. Also the guy wearing a gas mask looks cool sure. Though it would be uncomfortable, harder to breathe in and hampered vison. Definitely not something you would wear if you didn't have to, let alone go to a fight in lol

    It's not the fact that man cannot think for himself, you see the intelligence of all parties involved, knowing that shooting will inevitably get all of them killed. But it's the fact that instead of just turning around and walking away these men are committed to the ideologies of their nations, or at the very least the will to survive. Both parties know returning unsuccessfully is not an option, which could lead to punishment or even execution. The hallmark of this scene is that there are no stoic heroes amongst the group, even the German with the Gas mask and the Gauntlet spike(Which I'm not entirely sure why he's wearing a Gas mask for a night raid) is breathing anxiously. I wish there were some war movies like this on the Italian theatre, specifically the Arditi that would be hella dope.

    While night "raids" (like attacks at the enemy trench or sentries) weren't too common, doing sneaky things during the night definitely were. Wether recon to see what the enemy were up to, repairing or putting up obstacles like barbed wire in no man's land, or cutting through the enemy's such obstacles, there was a lot going on at night.
