Masters of the Air. Season 1. Episode 9. We were the true masters of the air.

Ойындар

Hello there and welcome to the opening scene from the final episode. Enjoy it!
As always Add-Free!
A series from Apple. During WWII, five miles above the ground and behind enemy lines, ten men inside a bomber known as a "Flying Fortress" battle unrelenting flocks of German fighters.
A like or comment is always appreciated and i will try to respond to them all.
Have a wonderful day! I recommend listening with headphones.

The only problem is that it isn't true! This raid is in February 1945. The Luftwaffe shot down many Allied aircraft in the coming weeks. Claiming to be masters of the air is an insult to those airmen who died in the last weeks of the war.

This is correct, but time and budget constraints meant they had to roll with what they had. The full sized, real, B-17 they had for ground shots was an F. So they had to stick to the F. Still, it doesn't take away from the over all spectacle.

I don't really agree with the current possibilities of computer animation that could have been used. We must not forget that this is not twenty or thirty years ago when these options would have really cost a fortune. Even if the production had a fixed budget, the visuals would still have had to be closer to the reality of the time because the relationship between the crews could not really be represented correctly. I don't have the slightest doubt about the work for this excellent acting and performance, but for me it falsifies the reality of that time.

German fighters could launch (or better, lob) missiles into US bomber formations, preferably from behind. As these rockets did not have any proximity fuses, they would detonate after a given time. Meaning that only expert Luftwaffe pilots like Galland were able to use these rockets effectively. If you launched them from the front, the rockets would probably go through the whole formation before exploding. These rockets did not fly well, which is why they were lobbed into the formations, falling through and losing altitude rapidly. I once read an account of an ace Luftwaffe pilot actually downing a P-51 with such a rocket, which seems unbelievable to me. *WWII US Bombers: Masters of the Air-Rocket Usage, shooting down bombers with questionable weapons and tactics*

As WW2 aviation themed shows/movies go it's nowhere near the worst offender. The CGI isn't even that bad. Short of Hollywood blockbusters like Top Gun 2 there isn't much better out there (and some -like Midway and Pearl Harbour -a hell of a lot worse). US fighter pilots who flew during World War II recollected there was pretty much no dogfighting at all. The smallest element in any fighter formation was the pair, one leader, one wingman., The leader would seek out targets to attack. The wingman's duty was to stay on his leader's wing at all times. Usually it was just hit an run. Spot a lone, unsuspecting enemy fighter, get on his six and let him have a short, accurate burst and he went down before he realized he was being attacked. If, however, you missed your target and decided to turn the hit and run into a dogfight, you were now without the element of surprise, speed decreasing and probably attracting your enemy's mates. And while you were busy turning and diving, trying to get that SOB in your sights, probably you yourself ended up in the gun sights of an enemy fighter whom you weren't even paying any attention to. So it was mostly hit and run, all the while staying in formation (element of two planes).

Again, lousy, inaccurate CGI work. None of the Mustangs that I can see have contrails. I know that it's a minor error, but too many things are bothersome about the clips I have seen. I may watch an episode to give the series a chance, but I just am not at all enthused about it. I even hate the title of this series....and the book. Maybe my expectations were just too high, and that no one could or would deliver. With a big budget and a required ROI, one cannot expect to see this chapter of US involvement in the war done right. Instead, mythology is created, and it's bad mythology at that. The real thing is infinitely more interesting. I was born in 1961, so I grew up surrounded by these guys who served in the war. They were my dad, my uncles, neighbors, guys at the barber shop, guys in town, guys all over the USA working at businesses and factories. NFL coach Tom Landry flew B-17s, and we all knew it, but no one made a big deal over it--because everyone served! And nowadays, they are venerated as gods and called Masters of the Air. What bullshit. It was just so common for me to talk to these men and, if they were willing, they would sometimes reveal some parts to me about their wartime experiences. Rarely, they spoke in an animated way about it, but it was damned fascinating when they did. And I always felt a small rush when they talked to me, a then boy or teen or young man in his twenties. But, Hollywood tends to turn real life events and real people into caricatures. And god how I hate it!!! But then, maybe that is what the paying public wants. Or maybe that is what the creators just do by default, and the price is that the real story and the realities are turned into glossy myth. To that end, I say that I will stick to the books and my memories of the guys who showed me their scars, their photos albums, their souvenirs, and told me in a spare way their stories.......and leave it at that. Most movies cannot match that, nor do these experiences justice. On a more positive note, there have been a few compelling scenes that look pretty good. Compared to old war movies done after the war and through the 1980s, I will admit that there are things that can be done now that could not be done decades ago. Watching Memphis Bell is just such an example. The air scenes just don't look good at all. The CGI here tops that and tops anything but the real thing. Still, there are just too many shortcomings with the technology. Either that, or the creators just don't know how to get certain details right due to lack of knowledge. That might actually be a shortcoming of technical advisors. Or the technology still needs more tweaking and refinement. Check six.

@@namelastname1085 Well put. BTW, there is a content creator here on youtube called WW2.US.Bombers. He is really good on technical details, weapons, tactics, etc on the USAAF use of bombers over Europe, over the Atlantic, and over the Pacific. He mentions some of the inaccuracies of MOTA since its release in some of his most recent vids. He talks about how the Mustangs in one scene is incredibly inaccurate in specific terms: far too many were shown (he gives specifics of how exactly many Mustangs flew that particular mission (and he even counted how many he saw in this particular scene), along with P-47s and P-38s also acting as escorts for that mission, and how absurdly close the escorts were flying to the bombers. It really looked awful to me when I watched the clip. I mean, it was immediately noticeable! Escorts in reality flew very specific positioning relative to the bombers to achieve best protection, but to also prevent being shot at by bomber crews! Even though I don't have the level of expertise that this fellow has, I have seen so many inaccuracies that I wonder who the hell acted as technical advisors, and just how accurate the book was. There are so, so many books written on this subject, and why it is that this particular book was used for the story telling is befuddling to me. Maybe it is because of its recency. I dunno.
