Actually in the early air battles between the early jet fighters and propeller aircraft if the jet didn’t get them first by surprise, bc the jets lacked targeting and air to air missiles, a Corsair or P-51 mustang could turn so much faster, it was common place for P-51’s to shoot down Me-262’s by preying on the jets weaknesses, a common tactic the Americans used was stalling when the jet was behind it and then the jet could not slow down quick enough and then was shot up,

It's Hollywood BS for the flak to follow dive bombers and air burst that close, you had you set the altitude for the fuses back then, no way you can do that to match a dive. Only the US and the UK had proximity fuses, even then it would be lucky to get a round that close to the diving aircraft. It just looks really cool to see it on film. The direct fire weapons like the 12.7mm you saw on the truck were the real threat, especially when pulling out of the dive which will have a relatively predictable flight path and relatively slow.

When I was a kid, my grandmother called all jet engine airplanes 'hojugi' (Australian airplanes) and all propeller airplanes 'musutang' (Mustang). At the time of the war, aircraft were unfamiliar to Korean civilians, and they simply completed their thoughts. 'if the plane attacking the enemy is noisy, it's an Australian plane (F-86, Gloster Meteor etc), and if it has a propeller, it's a Mustang (F-51, F4U etc)'. During the Korean War, my grandmother's brother was a police officer, and as a police family, being captured by North Korean soldiers meant execution. During her evacuation, she was surrounded by North Korean forces several times, but each time she was rescued by UN airstrikes. “We thought we were going to die this time because the North Korean army was blocking the road, but the ‘musutang’ passed by making the sound of popcorn, all that was left on the road was red meat and white bones. And the crows came and ate the meat”

  • @thepuncakian2024

@eltony4318 Actually in real life, a Corsair did in fact shoot down a Mig 15 in the Korean War. Not in the manner shown in the film and not by Tom Hudner, but it did happen. As far as the flak fire, I'm not exactly sure what the defenses around the bridge were like and how many, if any, US planes were taken out by anti-aircraft guns, but I do know the AA guns of that era were extremely inaccurate, even when used by trained and experienced gunners. In WWII, several thousand, even 10s or 100s of thousands, of rounds were required to bring just one plane down. It isn't 100% historically accurate and the CGI isn't the greatest, but I have definitely seen much worse depictions of history, and the overall theme of the movie, that devotion to one's country and one's comrades transcends skin color, is a good one, and accomplishes it without making Brown a complete Gary Stu or making Brown's comrades completely insufferable a-holes.

A Corsair with that much ordnance and two drop tanks would be about 250 knots on the deck. The Mig-15 would overshoot him and would have to make multiple passes. The Corsair did have a much much higher roll-rate and tighter turn than the Mig-15. So that part is accurate. Also, two 5 inch rockets only had 90lbs of explosives (combined). This would not take down a bridge....

Standard Mig-15 tactic was to start high, dive on the corsairs, and then climb out and prepare another pass. The one Mig-15 kill by a corsair was due to a rookie Mig pilot getting too greedy and instead of climbing out attempted to engage in dogfighting tactics. The kill was extremely lucky, but totally avoidable by the Mig pilot.

@@pixelfungaming Right? Absolutely ridiculous. I guess the reality of combat isn't exciting enough for Hollywood. Everything has to be exaggerated to an almost comical degree. In this movie, despite what one of the characters says, there's clearly no such thing as too much AA. The visual effects team can always pack in some more. "Hey! There's a square inch of sky in this scene that isn't filled with an explosion!" "Can we edit a few in?" "How many do you want? Three or four?" "Ten." "You got it!" "And tracer fire. We need MORE tracer fire." But, at least, in this movie the planes weren't WILDLY spinning for no apparent reason, making sharp 90 degree turns that defy the laws of physics, or flying their planes under bridges, through train tunnels, or passing through entire office buildings that happened to leave a couple of windows open.

In fact, at that time, on the banks of the Yalu River, the Chinese army was armed with only 12 old Japanese 37mm anti-aircraft guns. Such a single-barreled anti-aircraft gun could not pose any threat to the nimble and maneuverable F4U and AD-1 at all. Their anti-aircraft fire was weak. The program was also working on versions with jet engines mounted for extended range. For the Allies, the most significant threat was u-boats. After a lot of R&D over the first years of the war, the Allies leapt ahead in the battle of the Atlantic with radar sets on patrol aircraft that could detect a u-boat on the surface at range. U-boats could no longer safely come up to the surface at night to recharge batteries and send/receive radio messages. By 1945 the sets were so sensitive they could detect the snorkel of a submerged submarine. WW2 was a technological war, with most participants investing substantial resources into R&D. The weapon systems appearing in the late 40's and early 50's weren't suddenly developed, they built on work that had been going on for years.

It “just shows that you can’t always just take orders”….unless of course you’re in the military. Ha, if you are, you absolutely do have to “just take orders” from your superiors, at least if you want to continue serving in said military. If Jesse would’ve done that in real life, he’d be looking at real consequences, whether he blew the bridge or not. It’s an awesome scene, but it probably would’ve kept him out of the cockpit for quite a while if he had tried it. Military service is not a democracy.

This battle was the fiercest fight during the Korean War. It's called the Battle of Jang-Jin Lake(장진호 A.K.A 'Chosin'. Chosin is Japanese landname and it became the name of CG-65 Ticonderoga Class Cruiser.), and numerous ridges and highlands were bombed by repeated battles between the escaping U.S. Marine Corps and the chasing Chinese army's Human Wave attacks. In addition, the extreme cryogenic North Korean environment was harsh weather that the U.S. military had never experienced in history, comparable to the severe cold experienced by the Germans at the Battle of Stalingrad or the Battle of Bulge. In the movie, white mountains and frozen bridges look similar to Norway and Finland's weather. Yes, it's damn true. During The Korean War, Hamgyeong province and northern east area's average temperature in January was minus 15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit). Moreover, Morning lows hit minus 45 degrees during this battle. There were countless frozen-to-death and frostbite patients on both sides. The Chinese army planned a siege and annihilation of the U.S. military, and the U.S. Marine Corps survived to establish a defensive line. Including this battle, the Korean War is meaningful to both our South Koreans and the U.S. military. The U.S. military was the first war to fight against Chinese troops at the beginning of the Cold War, and we managed to defend Seoul and the south of the Korean Peninsula by enduring North Korea's surprise attack. I will remember their noble sacrifices and let our descendants know so that they aren't forgotten.

This scene is fucking awesome, if heavily layered in plot armor. While I LOVE this scene, it's simply unrealistic on all levels how they took down that MiG, not even mentioning the fact that only one MiG was ever shot down by a Corsair in Korea by someone else entirely. There are other nit picks such as the rockets not realistically holding enough explosive power to down a bridge, or the Chinese Anti--air gunners not knowing how to lead their shots on prop planes that were filled to the brim with ordnance, but those aren't movie destroying issues, simply issues that really take away from the realism of this movie.
