George wrote this song in memory of his Brazilian partner Anselmo Feleppa, whom he met in 1991 while performing at the Rock in Rio II Festival in Rio de Janeiro. Anselmo died only two years later of a brain haemorrhage - a result of his suffering from Aids. George said he never felt real love until he met Anselmo. That's why he dedicated this song and the whole album "Older" to his lost love. Dee, you say this one doesn't sound like George. Sweety, you are so WRONG!!!!!!!! You just have to go deeper into his music. THIS SONG IS 100% GEORGE!!!!!!!😘😘

I think his close friends did. George did keep It from his family other than Melonie. So sad that he felt he had to before Anselmo passed. I believe he came out to his parents shortly after then. I believe he not only had his sister's support but now the rest of his family was there to comfort him. Remember George still kept things close to his heart private. Still so sad! 😢🕯😇💖+😇💖4 EVER TOGETHER💞

George was a lyrical genius. You have to pay close attention to the meaning because it reveals everything. It took me a few times listening to this song for me to fully understand it. I loved it immediately, that soft bossa nova start, his beautiful soft delicate voice that is full of pain and sorrow for losing the love of his life, tugs at your heart strings.. And that phrase he smiled at me like Jesus to a child, means to me this person had complete pure unconditional love for him. Innocent and all accepting which I think is what everybody looks for. Just my take on it. But it was dedicated to the love of his life who died. He sings this live in front of the Brandenburg gate (mtv) for the first time with a symphony orchestra, back in the late90s. It’s absolutely worth checking out.

When he performed at Freddie Mercury's tribute concert, he knew that his partner had AIDS and that his great love didn't have long to live. After the death of his friend he had a writer's block and needed a long time to find his way back to music. On the album Older he sings about the processing of this pain and how he dealt with it.

Wow you guys really missed the boat on that one, It's all there in the lyrics, an unconditionnal love letter to a lost lover in the most painful of ways, one of George's most touching and profound song, I'm a grown man and tear up every time I hear it, his partner was really one of the few to have been loved like this, love is beautiful but life can truly be cruel, RIP Anselmo...

George's mum died about three yrs. later. This was way too much for George. He was very, very close to his mum, So he went into (as he put It) A black hole. Then when he came out of It about 4 yrs. later he wrote not just this song but, the album OLDER! George said many times that this was his favorite album and the best album he wrote! Suggestion, BROTHER CAN YOU SPARE A DIME. Watch the Pavarotti & Friends Venue, I think It's the best! It Will Blow You Away! Thanks, Guys, we'll see you again next time, take care! BK😄🎤😎🎶🎶🎶🎶 💖💞🗺💞💖

Yes, this song was dedicated to Anselmo Feleppa who was the love of his life and the love he never got over losing. Absolutely horrible the people we lost to AIDS. I had a cousin who died of the disease and it was a slow and painful death. George dedicated ALL the royalties from this song to the charity Childline who provides counseling to children in jeopardy. The director of the charity said that George made it possible for them to help hundreds of thousands of children.

I don’t believe George ever got over losing Anselmo. He tried, but don’t think it ever happened. Anselmo died of AIDS in I believe 1993. They were together 2 yrs. The Bosa Nova sound was because Anselmo was from Brazil.

Hi Karen, Great to see you here. I agree, I don't think George ever really got over his first TRUE LOVE, Anselmo. But when It gets right down to It, Does anyone Really get over their first TRUE LOVE? I think we remember, even If It's not a real issue anymore. George moved on as well, however, I do believe Anselmo was Never forgotten! Since George gave us his love through his music, we in turn wanted him to be happy! Yah? Take care my friend, BK🕯😇🥰💓

I always loved the song. always conveyed sorrow. But then I learned of his story and it made complete sense. It's sang from the heart, which was so broken, and this is him lamenting. His partner who he adored, died, and in the same week he was told his mother was diagnosed with cancer and she died not long after. This is like his feelings in lyrics

Easily one of my favorite George Michael songs. A tribute to his partner at the time who died from HIV/AIDS. Also, we never got the George Michael/Sade collaboration we deserved and I'm still mad about it. Like this slow bossa nova heavy reverb style is so them coded.

Anselmo went back to Brazil for treatment. George knew he had AIDS. George felt if Anselmo had done the treatment in the US or London, he would have lived. Anselmo didn’t want to put a strain on George’s career with the press. That is why he went back to Brazil for treatment n died there from a brain hemorrhage.
