A world class actor couldn't have done it more convincingly. No hype, often not looking at Boycott, and not even recognizing it effected him for several minutes. As beautifully and elegantly played as any off drive through the covers for four.

Boycott is so classy and as a batsman technically correct and amassed runs - the equivalent of a certain Sunil Gavaskar the Indian Opener. However in England Geoffery Boycott faces so many taunts and below the belt jibes, all thanks to his streak for what is seen as selfish play and mean gamesmanship. Gavaskar is quite a mirror image of Boycott in India. Yet even as Boycott faces flak for his several attributes not considered good for the team, Gavaskar is held aloft in India. Shows that India has been ever so starved of Sporting Greats and a Sunny G gets to be treated like a demi God while his exact copy in Britain gets treated like dirt - subjected to mean jibes and taunts. In fact SG was far worse than GB - the 36 not out in 60 overs opening bat in the 1975 World Cup in England showing that in clear terms

World class wind up. I come back and watch this every so often and it brightens my day. 😂

If that's Boycott taking it well, I'd hate to see him taking anything badly. I seem to recall that he was spitting blood when Botham ran him out on purpose at Christchurch in 1978 when Boycott had raced to 26 off 80 balls and England needed quick runs for a chance to beat NZ and level the series. "Wot 'ave yer dun, wot 'ave yer dun?" bleated Boycott. "I've run you out, you ****" was the reply "Worrabout mi average?" wailed the (very) temporary England captain - whose 77 off a mere 302 balls in the first Test is probably still talked about sadly among insomniacs in Christchurch, wishing the home VCR had been on general sale just a little earlier.

Aggers may not have been one of England's best Test cricketers. He did, however, soften up one of England's greatest batsmen of all time and turned him into a fantastic and loveable commentator for us all to learn from and enjoy.

@@1414yorks Except that he didn't face Lillee and Thompson at their fastest in the 74-75 ashes series, nor Holding and Roberts in 1976, because of his self-imposed exile from the England test team. Instead, England had to call up a couple of forty-something players in Colin Cowdery and Brian Close, who were well past their prime but willing to put their bodies on the line. I have a lot of admiration for his stubborn batting, but he was an awkward so and so, and he didn't always serve his country as well as he could have done.

Commentaries are dominated by women who have never played male test cricket which means they can’t tell Geoffrey stories about legends he has played with. It’s a shame. Wokism is dominating commentary boxes these days. And even though they are good. They are not the same. I reckon that’s why Geoffrey left. Banter went out of the window

I am Irish. Not a great cricketing nation. But many of us love Test matches. It is the quintissential english game. Its wonderful.

It comes across as spontaneous but there must have been a lot of planning to get this one right. Aggers has improved at keeping a straight face since he corpsed during the legover incident.

Someone did "knock out" some Faisalabad 100th 100 plates after this, and Boycott actually autographed them, so he appreciated the quality of the wind-up. A great piece of work by Aggers.

Aggers deserves an Oscar; Andrew for best supporting actor; Adam Mountford for being the greatest producer, and giggler, of our generation; and Sir Geoffrey, for taking it on the chin. Plus the WordSmith - now head of selectors - for bringing the mirth back down to earth with a couple of very gentle and elegant gags... Joy, pure esoteric joy.

Fair play to Boycott, he did admire the joke, he can praise where praise is due, and that was quality, dead pan and delivered as cunningly as an over from Warnie into the bowlers rough on day five.

That was truly fantastic. A tour-de-force from Boycott over desperately trying to not appear "bovvered" when he so clearly, CLEARLY was. How Aggers managed to keep a straight face I have no idea. Brilliant.

This is why cricket on the radio by the Test Match Special team is the best. Who needs tv coverage when you have this genius.

The subtlety of the little digs during this prank from aggers is pure class. You can literally see boycotts cogs turning. Drip feeding the situation aswell.😆

The pacing is great. It just slowly builds and builds.

I’m amazed they keep it going for 10 minutes. How they let it build and build, with its implications for Geoffrey coming later. I would have folded within minutes if I did this. A fantastic prank

I cannot believe Aggers managed to keep a straight face. His delivery is absolutely perfect.

One of my favourite bits of footage ever, I watch it at least once a week.

The chap at the back is smirking his way through the entire conversation.

Agnew very nearly blows it by corpsing in the first 30 seconds but once he gets in to it it becomes a masterclass of acting! The man should be a professional spy!

Whatever anyone thinks of Boycott. His record speaks for itself. He was a world class batsman, who held England together, when the rest of the innings was falling apart.

Love them both and I never get tired of this. It's one of the best wind ups I've ever seen.

I remember listening to this live. And any time since Aggers mentions a press statement, its ohh no, not again

This is the best wind up ever! The amount of back story, plus statistics to make it look absolutely legitimate and plausible is brilliant. Hats off to whoever brainwave it was.

The greatest wind up ever, Aggers was brilliant. I was listening live driving around the M25 in England.

Hahahahah awesome, I saw Aggers on the TMS live tour and he described the background to this stitch up: the planning and effort that went into it with the headed letter, the wording/quotes and it coming through the fax machine etc and them all keeping straight faces for so long (somehow) is awesome 😂

Done him like a kipper. Phenomenal wind up !!! How Agnew kept a straight face, I will never know.

Andrew , my favourite cricketer and also commentator/ analyst too. I sadly missed his 100th 100, in persin, at Headingly, but saw it on TV. I was there for Geoffs first innings in 1964. A fine debut innings of 47 against Australia at Trent Bridge. His first century was at The Oval against Australia, later that year.

I love the “a statistical press release…not very good at those.”

I actually listened to this live at work........was crying with laughter at the end. Amazing job by Aggers to keep a straight face all the way through.

I watch this just about every day. It's absolutely brilliant. There is just as much memorabilia on the internet for Boycott's Faisalabad hundredth hundred as his Headingley hundredth hundred.

Agnew bowled it down Piccadilly and Boycott was playing up the Bakerloo line!

I heard this live and was totally taken in. Aggers is a genius and love Ed Smith coming in at the end.

Really laughed the first time I saw this, but even funnier to watch their faces second time round. Boycott trying (unconvincingly) to pretend that he isn't all that bothered, and I love the mock vagueness in Agnew's questions about those 'unofficial' matches. "You played in those matches didn't you Geoffrey?", "So, those hundreds won't count?", "Which one was Geoffrey Boycott's proper, authentic, hundredth hundred?".

Agnew straight-faced does Boycott to shreds. Boycott keeps going 'I don't care, I'm thinking of the others' as if. He only ever thought of himself.

Geoffrey wasn’t interested in the match at all. All he was concerned about was that letter. 😆😆😆

Boycott was a dignified British gentleman during his prolific England career and still is now.

I fell for it too. Brilliant piece of theatre that. And the replacement commentator, priceless follow up.

A very believable story though. I fell for it. 😊

Genius. And so well executed. The slow revelation of the press release's implications was just subline.

What a wonderful 10 minutes of dry humour. Boycott showed a marvellous temperament under pressure there too! You can see a lot of knowledge, camaraderie and love for the game in this clip, despite the fact we don't see a single ball bowled

ONYA Agger's, you're always a legend here in Australia Mr Boycott. I saw you and Beefy play against Chappelle and Lillie at the SCG back in the 70's.

I like how Aggers gets a bit nervous at 6:43 when Boycs takes a closer look at the press release himself! This is hilarious 😂

I listened to this live, I even remember where i was. Driving between Ripon and Harrogate and I was feeling annoyed at the ICC. Then Aggers dropped the bombshell of a wind-up. Class act.

I was at work in an office and you could tell, just by watching, who had TMS on their headphones as the gag played out.

All good clean fun. They knew which "bait" to use and Geoffrey Boycott took it. The format of a test match allowed the tension to build over time, bit y bit until Aggers lets Boycott know it's a wind-up. How Aggers maintained his composure for so long, I'll never know. In the "legover" with Jonners he lasted about a second before collapsing into a fit of giggles.

This is what sets TMS apart. Test cricket gives you time to fill in time when there isn't a lot going on. So they could stretch it out and Aggers delivering the punchline just as his shift ends so there's no chance of a riposte from Boycott.

This was absolutely brilliant! And don't forget the cameo in all this played by 'Roland Jones' ... wouldn't have been as authentic as this without the part played by.... 'Roland Jones' on the field!

For the brilliance of its execution, the ‘Boycott wind up’ is up there with Morecambe & Wise’s ‘Andre Previn sketch’ or Del Boy’s ‘Chandelier sketch!’ 😂😂😂

yes and I was sat in my car listen as had just got home thinking that the changes were ridiculous, not because of the racist arrogant Boycott, but the stupidity of the revisionist interference. You could see on the clip he's trying to work out how it affects him personaly
