Sometimes when I run into videos like this or stories, I get mad at myself for being ungrateful sometimes, to what I have. Sad thing that we tend to forget how lucky we are to live normal lives. I feel extreme despair in my chest, my heart goes out to these girls. Can't imagine what they go trough. It's a sad world out there, need to think about it more often.

Well, to be fair 'Romania' is not one homogenous mass. As was already pointed out, gypsies as a group have a load of problems with exemplifying crime and a hatred of women, and outside of that ethnic component, there are massive differences between a wealthy city, a troubled city and the countryside. Having had to study 'the former eastern block' I got a bit of background on the development of Romania during the 1990's up until now and things have improved massively.

They are both latin languages so have similar roots. Romanian is similar to Spanish, french and italian too as they are all latin languages. However Portuguese is the latin language furthest from romanian.

Looking at this documentary: this is basically what a lot ignorant ppl imagine Romanians to be, how Romania and "typical Romamians" looks like in their illusion. All bc of the names Romanian/Roma(ni). Using this logic I guess _Roma_ ("Rome"; capital of Italy) and the _Roman Empire_ are also the same thing 😒 I don't know how many times I had to explain to people that Roma(ni) and Romanians aren't "the same thing". I just saw the BBC documentary on this, but they didn't accept comments. The same girl who was kidnapped at 12 and rescued by her mother was kidnapped again. The police acted so slowly that one girl got murdered by the time they traced the call and got there 24 later. They aren't even punished for doing this, making me think that the police are in on it getting a cut of the action. I wish these girls could defend themselves, carry a knife or something.

That's how the countryside in Romania works. Unlike in other countries it isn't a retirement place...it's just poverty from birth to death. Many villages don't have schools/hospitals, running water in the taps etc. They live how they can. Also guys in poor conditions tend to be gang or bad boy oriented. People in Romania can have very nasty attitudes depending on where they are from. I guess it all adds up

Not able to forget the face of that little girl. May God keep her and other girls safe. A lot of people goes through lot of difficulties, we can reach out to anyone using Facebook, Google, we should be able to reach out to them.

I work with a unit that raids brothels in Germany and can say that the most women in there are from Eastern Europe. Romania is the second poorest country in Europe so they seek a better life in the West. The families portraited here are most likely Gypsies who are even poorer than the other Romanians.

For the most part of Romanian history the elit always showed prevelant eastern antropologic features. So if there is no such thing as Canadian, there is no such thing as Romanian

Geida is such a well spoken and gentle soul. I really wish and hope she gets to follow her dreams, go to university and become a flight attendant one day.

The moral of the story isn't to be grateful, it's to HELP OTHERS you see in trouble because you don't know what they're escaping. Be kind to one another. Care for people you meet in real life who don't look like you or come from your background. Don't be "grateful" for the bare basics that every human being is entitled. Be angry that others don't have your life.

Too much people talk but the hard truth is no one care of the needs of poor. Nothing will change until is no more rich people taking the resources of the poor.

This is so tragic, I feel so angry that those children and girls have to go through that - and yet they still smile, through all that. I wish I could help somehow.

Geida speaks so mature for a 7 year old. When i see videos like this i'm reminded that theres a real world outside my little life that there are lot more important matters i should pay attention to. That real people go thru something like this.

What a powerful ending. I'm feeling devasted somehow after seeing this innocent little girl telling the reporters about her dreams while she has to grow up in this environment. I'm rooting for her and hope she can achieve what she dreams of! And to all the guys which are going to brothels sleeping with women who are just like Maya: I'm not stupid, some guys will always use these services. But at least treat these women with respect! They had and have dreams, too, just like the little girl at the end of the documentary....

...and in our countrys people argue about how many genders there are and other nonsense, instead of thinking what we can do to make this world a better place for humans and animals. Incomprehensible.

I thought the mother wasn't going to leave Maya again after being gone the first 10 yrs, then 2 mins later she leaves her 3 kids w a neighbor to go away again to work, wonder how it happens Mom?

My mum went to Romania to study medicine but in her free time she would go to the local villages and meet the locals but she always said that the men seemed awfully weird

For the person who wrote that these people are gypsies, it's irrelevant because it happens to non-gypsie Romanians too and these kids -are kids and they should not have to go through this. And exactly the same procedures like: fall for a guy who will pimp you out or send you to work as something else in a different country and then take your passport and pimp you out or just people who will promise girls decent work in another country, but then prostituting them and keeping them prisoners basically. And if you are Romanian, it is impossible not to know of these situations! Stop acting so ignorant! The family in the video might be Roma, but they speak perfect Romanian (and most probably this is the only language they know) and they are no different than another Romanian human being. It bothers me someone to categorize them as- they are gypsies- like it is normal that it happens to them, but us, the non-gypsies Romanians- it never happens to us- like it's the girls' fault that this happened to them. And it also bothers me for someone to say that they are not Romanians, if they are not Romanians, what are they? Look at Geida, this little angel and how pure she is. You freaking discriminate her for how she looks, but you forget to see her soul, you forget to see that she is no different than your young sister or cousin, or your own child and she should be treated the same way and have the same opportunities as them.

MyStar Misterioza They're not Romanian, they do not have the same ethnicity no matter how cute you think they are. France has a Moroccan minority as well, does it mean that Moroccans are French? The thing is, nobody is bothered by their ethnicity but by their culture and their lack of integration. Yes they are poor, but they also have the right to free education which in turn can help you out of poverty. But they refuse to go to school and to study, not all of them but a lot of them. Their problem is their culture.

MyStar Misterioza: You are a heartily person but not everything you wrote in true. They are a different bread of people hard to integrate in any societies. When the Rumanian government give to some gypsies families an apartment they made a pigsty of it and it is not a hearsay. Maybe the government of Rumania should introduce a compulsory level of education for all (gipsy included). In this way perhaps it could be easier to get in contact with other pupils at schools and help change some of their habits. If the government would like at least to try.

It does matter, gypsies live in isolated enclaves preventing the enforcement of law which would stop the human trafficking in the first place.

These people in the video are actually gypsies not romanians but they do indeed speak romanian in this video. Gypsies have their own indian language as well.

It has nothing to do with being gypsy or non-gypsy. It has to do with being female and poor. The same kinds of young women as these - except this time from Eastern Europe (white caucasian girls!!) - are abused and trafficked just as much if not more than these girls. Poverty and female gender are a toxic mix in a dysfunctional world.

Going to a brothel means being part of a heinous crime. They might smile but it could be a forced one.

Happens every day, not just in Romania but mostly in Italy, social workers will try anything to take a single mothers child away just because she is poor instead of helping her find a home which is illegal. Some social workers in Italy illegally take your child away because they gain money from the adoptions they make of the poor mothers child. And as for poor mothers I mean JUST poor including, loving poor mothers, non abusive moms, hardworking moms. Just because they are alone they will try to take your child unless you have a lawyer or strong connections to help you.
