The children of Nauru: 'What’s the point of surviving at sea if you die in here?' | The Nauru Files

Australia is obliged to offer protection to refugees. Instead, many are processed at a detention centre on the remote, independent island of Nauru, 3,000km from Australia.

The fact that the one girl was saying "For the boys it's not so dangerous, they just get killed." If her definition of "not so dangerous" is literally dying, something is wrong, in Burma as well as Nauru. ~:~

I love the way the kids day there is nothing to do all day and then show them digging of the dirt. LOL so fake. The fact is they have activity officers entertaining them and adults too. Sewing class complete with sewing machines, art, and music classes. A library, school, internet, English language lessons and a shop with lots of treats, phones cards and cigarettes. The gates are open through the day and they have access to buses to go into town. Adults get given $50 a week to spend, teens $40 and children $25. Very generous pocket money I would say. When was the last time Iran was a war torn country? Over half Asylum seekers are Iranian. Many young men who just don't want to go into compulsory military in Iran. Sob story and using children to pull at your heart strings. Shameful media at it's best.

Those women on Nauru of child bearing age got pregnant as soon as they could, came to Australia to give birth. All of those families are all out in the community now, they were not sent back. All children from Christmas Island were also given visas to come and live in Australia. Those now on Naruru arrived after the cut off date and it would have been kinder to have towed their boats back to Indonesia. They are still free to go home with money in their pockets. Sri Lankans always were given safe haven in India but preferred Australia. Country shopping. Real Asylum seekers are happy to find anywhere safe.

These kids have been filmed in 2016 with chubby faces, Microwaves, TV's, toys and even kittens. Their only complaint was being bored due to parents taking sleeping pills and forcing them to play quietly. Being brain washed by rioting adults that ruin $60m worth of property to get their own way is the problem. I say send the kids my way deem the parent unfit and negligent for putting them on the boat and lock them up for child endangerment. Thank god they are kept from doing that type of damage to a place like Tasmania.

+Danker Memesberg lol I'm a traitor? Right! People like you are so disgusting. I don't know how you can live with yourself. You should read the article about the files. If you'd do that you'd see that children make up about 18% of the asylum seekers, but 51,3% of the reports of incidents that now have been leaked and can be found on the website involve children. They mutilate themselves out of desperation, they are sexually/physically abused by guards, etc. People who worked there in the past have described it as a 'concentration camp'. These camps are a disgrace. If you're okay with that there's something wrong with you. I'm not the traitor here. I actually like western civilization. You know what is also a part of western civilization? Human rights! Besides, how do you know being a Christian in Iran isn't the reason the Iranian girl fled?

Of course the solution is to get rid of the problems in your home country, but this is Earth, not some fairy-tale planet. Sometimes not running away from your problems means death or torture. Australia is one of the countries that voted in favor of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. Article 5: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Article 14: (1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution. (2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. If fucking rich first world country Australia isn't willing to uphold basic human rights, why would any other country?

+Richard Taylor None of the people in this film were from Africa. Why the daft polemic? I'm talking about empathy. Do you see these children and think of them as unworthy of compassion? Are you aware that concentrations of wealth such as Australia's are only viable by exploiting other people around the world. Or do you believe that it was the Aussies bootstrap gumption that gave them prosperity? Ask an Indonesian about Australia's complicity with General Suharto. Ask them why it is profitable to maintain the suppression of workers rights, rights that we expect nothing less than to provide us with affordable clothes, sugar, timber, fish etc. You cannot just regurgitate scapegoat talking points that avoid our collective responsibility.

Yeah because people who are obviously so desperate to get to Australian wouldn't do or say anything to get here??? Even when many stayed in Australian detention centres we had riots and refugees setting buildings alight and sewing their lips together on hunger strikes etc. Sorry games over we all now know that 80% of refugees at Nauru live in the community and eve own business and those refugees at the centre are free to come and go 24/7 and live in modern self contained bungalows complete with Air conditioning, hot water and all the mod cons including big flat screen TV and even a Gym, three meals a day, and even receive an allowance, add to that free health care and legal advice etc. The reality is they live under better conditions than Nauru locals and hundreds of millions in this world and ten times better conditions than those in third world refugee camps who often live in tents without running water, clean drinking water, without toilets, struggle to get a feed and do not have access to health care or an income. BTW. True refugees from a war torn country would jump at the chance of a new life be it PNG or Cambodia, the fact they have turned down these options confirms they are country shopping...Do you really think those stuck in third world refugee camps would turn down the same opportunity of a new start?

Iran to Australia ending up in Nauru? How did that route happen? 4:41 The point is to not give people incentive and hope they will have a chance to live in Australia. It is to dissuade the flow of people, who would risk their lives and their children's lives to get to Australia. Otherwise you would end up with the situation in Europe, except across open ocean. This news piece doesn't include anything about whether this policy has slowed the traffic of people across that ocean to Australia nor how many children drowned previously in the attempt. The sentimental maudlin music is a clear attempt to make an emotional propaganda piece vs just be news

The asylum seekers ARE being given protection. That is all they are entitled to. It is not Australia's obligation to give a 'better life' to foreigners. They are not Australian citizens, yet we are supplying them with food and shelter. They are free to go to any place in the world that will take them, just not Austraiia. There are indigenous children born on Nauru and Manus. What is so special about Pakistanis and Iranians?

I beg to question what the meaning of "humanity" is. I agree, all nations needs to work and better themselves in providing basic living conditions for their people. But this is only possible if all nations are given a level playing field to achieve this dream. Exploitation of resources and people by the powerful which largely goes unpunished must be stopped. What the world is witnessing today is an ongoing war for resources. "Humanity" on the other hand does not exist. We are beasts who live off each other and those fortunate, exist by defending their loot with vile violence and brutality.

I feel sympathetic, but this is a necessary policy to have such a deterrent. In fact the eu should be adopting policies like this. Many on the left just have not quite grasped just how many people in the global south would flood the west in an instant given the chance with open borders. I want the United Nations to be taking the ideas of a few mega rich folks seriously, some have been trying to get backing to create refugee islands under un guidance, land would be purchased from nations like Philippines. I believe people who live in oppressive nations like the United deserve a second chance but you can not force another nation to accept you. I know this is probably a pipe real but I think we need to break some eggs to make an omelette.

Amnesty International is an organization which is irrelevant to today problems. Amnesty International was an organization that defended individual oppressed by government for their different views or simply criticizing their policies. Today Amnesty International systematically defends Muslim voices, defends Muslim expansion, defends Muslim orientation to terrorism. Amnesty International nowadays, never supports any Western nations for their foreign or internal policies,. Amnesty International again is systematically criticizing over and over and over. Amnesty International never contributed one dollar to people starving in Africa, Amnesty International never contributed one dollar towards million of displaced refugees. We must disband that organization fattening up in high-rise glass building in Geneva. . Amnesty International has become a useless tool that no monetary fund should be allocated by your private donation.

Australia needs to detain these people first to determine if their not terrorists. The children is another thing, protect them. For those who've caught themselves on fire, I have no pity.
