Generation 9 is already better than Generation 8

Ойындар

Not very often I get to be one of the many people on this website that talks about video games for a long time. Years ago I made a video about the very start of Pokémon Generation 8, and now I’m here to complete my thoughts and jump into the next gen. A lot of Pokémon games have come out since then so I decided the vast void needed to hear my thoughts more than anyone else’s
Can Generation 9 make up for the fallings of 8? Or is it already worse off than the best of gen 9?

Not only did they kill Arvens mom, but they made her abandon that poor boy TWICE 😭 the second time he had to watch her leave. And I think he knows that that was just an AI, but hes never told outright that that isnt his real mom either. Poor kid almost had the saddest story in pokemon history.

I think the little Pokémon you had trouble evolving was Tandemaus who can only evolve after a battle

The Wiglett theory is nice but it's based on the garden eel. Garden eels are a type of eel that stick up straight from the ground. They are regular eels they've just evolved to live like that. (Also I like Sun and Moon too!!)

If you read the little blurbs on the team star members and pokemon gym leaders on the map they hint at their strength levels and give you a bit of guidance on the order in which to battle

I feel like I'm the only one whose jaw dropped when I saw Skelidirge. What a COOL guy. I love the lore that he's only ghost type because the fire bird gained a soul. To think I only chose him on impulse because I loved the way his little mouth hung open as he looked at me. He started with no brain cells... and well. Ended with none either but having this sugar skull croc with a fire bird was the COOLEST thing. Feel bad for people who picked Quaxly, though I hope some people were really happy with him. I tried to like him.

I do think this has been the best game story and character wise in a long time. I absolutely adore Arven, his story actively made me and from what I’ve seen other KZreadrs tear up. Actual emotional impact in Pokémon is surprising so I really enjoyed it. And ya know Arven’s whole story bit just with Mabostiff is great. And really sad. He’s probably my new favorite character in a long time. The finale battle for the main story was sick. Also I think the finale not being the league is a good change. And I like how the characters actually formed a bond with each other. They just feel well written. And I like the post credit picture at the end of everyone together. I overall enjoyed the game a lot, I came into the game expecting disappointment after being burned by Brilliant Diamond. And hearing the final evo starters are bad and all the glitches really bummed me out. But man we’re all those people wrong, despite all it’s issues I love this game and it has become my new favorite Pokémon game. Great video, I always like hearing your analyses.

As someone who has been around since Gen 1, I think 9 is both the best and worst in the series. The writing is surprisingly strong, Arven and Nemona were the first rivals I've actually felt deserving of the word in a long time despite neither being true rivals. Arven's story was surprisingly emotional without feeling dumbed down for a younger audience, Nemoa being a challenge to aspire to, fitting with other continuities where powerful trainers limit themselves for weaker opponents. She feels like a Red and Blue level legend, despite not having prior set up. Bit of a letdown that we never get to face her original team though. I really liked that the League wasn't the endgame here. It always felt so weird to just have the big climax and then just go back to the last gym and league. Gen 9 very clearly set things up so the league was never THE goal, just a goal. It even lets you go take the assessment without any badges despite not being able to fail it. Gen 9 told us to have our own adventure with the league being one part of it, rather than the primary in universe goal. Team Star though is where I feel 9 is the worst yet. Not that I dislike Team Star, rather that the open nature of the world made them feel entirely inconsequential to me. The only reason they mattered is because the game said they did. The league and Titans were something I wanted to face for the challenge and seeing cool giant Pokemon. I had no reason to care about Team Star and if not for the final story bits, I could forget they exist. That's a huge shame because I really liked what they did with the writing there, but the fact you never once encounter them outside their bases, making them feel like segmented content rather than part of the world, makes Star the worst "evil" team for me. I think they needed to interrupt our activities at some point to stick out like their predecessors, as they otherwise feel so disconnected from everything. Maybe taking out bases early could've prevented them from getting in our business elsewhere, giving incentive to deal with them first for players who don't want the interruption. The endgame was great. Despite feeling that Violet's visuals are a minor step back from Legends, the entire final area was visually stunning and impressively big. It was practically a second overworld, when I was expecting just a dungeon or cave. Loved having your little party venture through it together. Felt organic that your group came together in the end, despite how forced Star felt. Only have to knock it because that section would've sorely benefited from voice acting and the massive area doesn't have quite the dex variety for such a large space. Which is kind of weird, since the variety in any given area elsewhere is staggering but the final area gets a bit repetitive by the time you reach the finale. Still a big variety, just not big enough for such a large area. Where the game really failed for me is the world itself. Paldea was great but the sheer freedom and accessibility of fast travel right out of the gate left me feeling very little connection to Paldea like I had with all prior regions. While some areas had memorable landmarks there didn't feel like much personality to individual towns. The characters had it, but the world feels so open and free that it's hard to feel like more than just a really big overworld. By comparison BOTW made you work for your exploration. The stamina management of climbing made you earn that glide to cover large space. Made you seek out shrines and other fast travel points. Gen 9 tells you where the centers are right away and they are so well spread out that the other points aren't necessary for the most part. It doesn't feel like discovering the world to me, rather just stumbling from center to center. The puzzles for Koroks made you observe and think about the areas, where Ghimmighoul just makes you listen and look closely. Paldea and it's inhabitants feel more real than ever but I've got no attachment to tbe region itself because of how easy to traverse it is and how little thought it takes for me to go anywhere or do anything. The settlements being seamlessly linked to the overworld is nice but the lack of indoor areas makes them feel hollow. In terms of execution they did a phenomenal job with this first attempt at balancing an unscaled open world. But it feels so utilitarian, like everything is designed around that freedom to the point both the region and the team of the game suffer for me. Paldea is the most fun I've had since Gen 2 but it's a region I'm barely going to remember despite seeing it fully realized. That's saying something as the regions themselves always feel so rich to me. So in 10 I'd like to see them focus more on making bespoke areas that stand out for more than a cool design or having a gym leader. I want them to give us a world that feels stepped in history and lore, work the evil team into things just a bit more. This level of freedom, with a more memorable region and slightly better integration of the narrative and world would be perfect. Well that and bring back the Legends catching system, even make it less likely to succeed as incentive to battle. Just let me throw the balls outside of battle again.

@@zeroattentiongaming820 wow I actively said holy shit when I saw this reply. You put a lot of work into it and I get where your coming from with a lot of what you had to say. I think I differ a bit on team star just cause in reality they weren’t an evil team so we wouldn’t see them out and about doing “evil” things. But I do still get what you mean. I personally felt connected with the region, you’re correct in saying the towns weren’t like super memorable but for me I just remember the exploration and loving it. Even with the fast travel that doesn’t get you everywhere you need to go and sole pokemon show up in areas quite a distance away from any fast travel so it’s worked for me. Again this was a very thought out response to my comment and I liked hearing what you had to say. Also I completely agree pokemon needs voice acting.

I started with Pokémon Go while I was in college, but my first main game was Sword. I hated it so much. I never finished it and I decided not to get into Pokémon and just stay with Pokémon Go. Then Arceus came out and it looked really cool and all my friends were getting it and telling me it’s really cool, but I didn’t want to spend money on a game I didn’t like, so I watched so many playthroughs before I bought it and holy fuck I’m a huge simp for Volo he is so hot. But anyways, I’m super happy with Scarlet. The story was great, multiplayer is cool and works, Rika and Grusha are hot as hell-

I think that last statement of the game is the best summary. It’s not god awful , it’s not the best game ever, it’s good. It’s a good game, things could be improved, like one of my things I wish they fix is shines since they don’t sparkle or have a sound like in arceus.

When Pokémon make a new game they r testing new mechanics for their next game. The wild area was a first “draft” u could say for Legends arceus with them toying with the idea of an open world Pokémon game. Then PLA was more open world but didn’t fully commit to it. So they settled with the 5 sections and allowed the player to roam there instead. But legends arceus made an open world Pokémon game while testing camera angles during battles and how to catch Pokémon in the over world. And that’s why S/V r pretty good with those aspects. This still doesn’t change the fact that they took a new main line Pokémon game and made it their test subject for future games. And making them feel incomplete or rushed while charging 60 bucks for them. I agree with saying that Pokémon SS were fun games but as a long time fan of the series since gen 3. A long time player should be able to have fun through out the entire game for the right reasons (challenge, better routes designs, more post game missions and especially graphics) and not because of finding new Pokémon to use. That is a reason to enjoy them but it shouldn’t be the main reason. It should be expected in every new installment. While the DLC for sword and shield was fun I think isle of armor could have had some of it included in the base game. The second dlc update deserved to be called dlc for introducing new and old Pokémon while adding stuff for certain aspects that fans enjoy (Vgc or collectors. I can’t say that I’ve ever hated Pokémon game because I’ve grown up with the series but also because the games while being not being 100% polished it still is a game the fan base will enjoy regardless of its flaws. And that is the beauty of these games new or old they still stand the test of time.

😱 Pokémon fans when you point out that a kids game isn’t made to be reset 500x for “challenges” and the “unskippable dialogue” is actually the point of a story driven JRPG… 😱😱😱 Pokemon fans when you tell them that the games are actually meant for first time players (aged 8-16) and not for existing superfans old enough to be US president and have kids the age of Ash Ketchum

Nintendo has the best strategy to drip feed content to an unfinished game. The only part i agree with is that it will lessen the work load for the devs becasue im pretty sure over half a million people got fired last year in Microsoft and other corporations. So its good to see ninendo avoid that fire and sega too I guess since I heard some workers there got higher pay.

Indeed one's opinion on a pokemon game can change. I remember feeling weird about sword and shield at first and over time they became my favorite pokemon games. My heart skips a bit when thinking about them. After I finished pokemon scarlet I started a new pokemon shield playthrough with the grass starter this time. First 50 to 60 hours of pokemon scarlet were amazing and I felt like the new games are the best in the series then I stopped playing scarlet and never felt the reason to touch it again. Now I actually hate Gen 9. I don't know why but this is how I feel. I realised that Gen 8 feels more repayable to me, my opinion. And yes, when I say Gen 8 I mean Legends Arceus too. I love legends arceus and is the best I felt playing a pokemon game yet (I recently finished it). But over all, the games I always come back to are Sword and Shield for some reason. They mean a lot to me. Will scarlet and violet be back in my heart one day? I do not know but as of now, I hate these games.
