Is Competitive Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet Faster than Gen 8?

Ойындар

#competitive #pokemon #scarletviolet
In this video I build my first competitive team in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to see if things have improved from Pokemon Sword and Shield. I typically recreate a world champs team from scratch, but today I have to build my own team from scratch, including planning, to see if it's better. The VGC rules aren't out yet, so I made some assumptions, but so is everyone.

    Honestly, building a team other than trick room almost makes breeding a completely skippable step in these games. You're showered in so many cash items, mints, bottlecaps, and capsules that you can basically make any mon you catch off the side of the road competitively viable in minutes, making this sun room team essentially a worst-case scenario for S/V competitive prep. I'm actually looking forward to putting my first team together this time around. ... well, not counting having to grind for tera shards. But the basic process has been made so easy and freeform, I can almost forgive how much grinding needs to be done for those. Almost.

  • @LittleRaAnime

    @LittleRaAnime

    @@imablisy I'd also say that getting a worst case scenario as our example makes it good for reference, since it didn't have to deal with pulling pokemon from different games or getting move tutors in different games set up and then sending them back, as well as the simplicity of the ev spreads not needing fine tuning. The only other thing would be 0 attack on special attackers for the slim chance you run into someone using confuse. Shards could be better, but I do see the design logic in the idea that the pve endgame was for people to be regularly grinding 5 and 6 star raids online, with the 7 star event raids also happening, it could be assumed that your average player starts building up a lot of shards and tons of treasure for money. I hopefully look forward to a dlc restaurant that does it for 20 shards instead of 50, and a new area that only gets high star raids, and hopefully a better way to reset evs than feeding them a ton of berries that you may or may not have even found many of on the ground.

    Admittedly I'm not a competitive player (at least on console), but I actually love breeding in these games. Masuda method is so much more enjoyable now that you don't have to run around in a circle in front of some building, talking to an NPC every 5 seconds. I can go in a picnic, make a sandwich, and then go make food IRL/to the bathroom/what have you, and come back 5 minutes later to 10 eggs that sort themselves directly in my boxes. Once the sandwich power runs out I get to walk around the entire region and maybe find a random wild shiny along the way as well. It's such a blast

    I personally don't care much for the new breeding method. The idea that I need to just sit and wait in the picnic for the basket to get full of eggs is incredibly lame. I'd rather collect eggs while hatching them simultaneously. Having to manage more menu's is also annoying and its definitely worse than SwSh. :/ I think it would've been great to keep the daycare but have some access/connections to it through the pokéstops or something, and you could collect a bunch of eggs at once at any of the Pokéstops while traveling around and hatching eggs which would be a breeze with the new sandwich boost. That'll be more fun imo.

    I personally enjoy the new breeding mechanics. I get they aren’t for everyone but it’s nice to be able to afk-generate eggs while doing something else like watching a video, making dinner, chatting on Discord, etc. However, the best change to breeding was how fast eggs hatch now. I’d imagine if it wasn’t for the increased hatch speed, breeding would be worse in Scarlet and Violet than it was in Sword and Shield due to the mandatory waiting for eggs.

  • @littleworrier

    @littleworrier

    You could accomplish the same by including a daycare that generates eggs with movement as well as being able to afk for them. Hell you could even just allow people to open their box during picnic and it would be so much better. Cutting the rate of egg acquisition is just objectively worse and it just doesn't feel great when the time it took in past gens to acquire and hatch a box or two of eggs is just taken to sit there and wait for a single box to be sent to storage.

    I like the idea of Picnic Breeding. You can do it whenever and wherever you want, and I do kinda find making sandwiches for Meal Powers a bit of fun. The execution is terrible tho, as mentioned, Eggs going to the PC box, having to have your two breeding pokemon in your party, and only being able to generate eggs in the picnic when you can't move around much or use the box is so tedious compared to previous gens. It was a nice idea on paper, but in the future I'd like the idea refined to actually be an improvement over the old system, or just give us daycares back.

    I think one thing that's worth mentioning is that if you're looking to EV train, you should look at your Mass Outbreaks and see if there's anything that has the EV yield you're looking for. What you're looking for isn't always going to be there, but if it is (or is a stat you already have maxed out) you can easily use the Power items to keep hitting Pokemon from the same outbreak. It gets even better when the Pokemon is one that automatically aggros you, as you don't have to run around and initiate the battles, with the battles coming to you instead. A really good Pokemon outbreak I encountered for this was Revavroom. It has 2 Attack EVs, and will target you down and DASH straight at you the second it notices you. This means you can keep spamming the A button on a Super Effective attack and just keep getting Attack EVs for whatever Pokemon needs it. Just an example, but I think the Mass Outbreaks are great for more than just Shiny Hunting. Edit: Also I think the video title is slightly confusing, and confused a couple of my friends. Some people took it as referring to Competitive matches taking less time (less turns) rather than Breeding Competitive Pokemon taking less time. Not sure how you would fix that, or if ya even want to. Just figured I'd mention it!

    i'm glad i'm not alone with the changes to the eggs. like, we'd basically perfected the system for 20+ years. i've always bred my vgc teams for big events, especially for things like worlds and internats, and it was always a sort of therapeutic ritual. i get that i'm in the minority here on that part, but you're right it's got a real flow to it. i've been breeding a team currently and i feel like i'm fiddling with boxes or afk for most of it. i know there was an interview with masuda where he said he didn't like the idea that there are players out there who spend all of their time just hatching eggs. so i think that's why we've seen so much to improve just 'using what you find' but building up the resources necessary for that, accounting for multiple teams (potentially hundreds per generation) and team progression changes through a season, it's still way too slow. like you can short cut the process with pokemon showdown, but we shouldn't need showdown as a step one. and don't get me started on the tera shard fiasco.

    You do have to keep in mind, you compared SwSh with all DLC to SV with no DLC. I have no doubt you'll be able to buy Tera Shards in DLC, just like you can apply G-max in IoA for SwSh. I think the 50 Tera Shards cost with no easy way of getting a lot of them is mostly due to new game trying to push you to do raids to get your Tera pokemon rather than just changing them willy-nilly, at game launch; Just like how Gmax was handled with SwSh. Additionally, this is still early days, and if people consistently do raids over the next few months before the first official VGC tournament, people will likely have a large number of Tera Shards. Sure, not enough to not have to worry, but I think enough to get their first teams put together. Also, breeding is worse, but also better imo. It's better overall for shiny hunting, probably worse if you don't need 100s of Pokemon. The idle time can be spent outside of the game (such as working if you are a tech worker like me) and the hatching is significantly faster imo. Going directly to box seems directly aimed at shiny hunters, as we rarely want our first batch to go into our party because we want to hatch them all at the same time. Sadly, every egg requires an extra egg cycle after each hatch to hatch the next one, so that defeats that (didn't we have this fixed in BDSP?!). Sandwich buffs are huge for eggs, and you get about 10 eggs (the limit) in roughly 6 minutes of waiting. That said, I would also prefer being able to run around while waiting for eggs to be laid, and I also don't like the whole, "pokemon in the party" BS. I think it's overall 2 steps forward, 1.5 steps back. Also, if you cheese the Academy Ace Tournament with a turbo controller like described in GameBoyLuke's video, you'll be ready to just purchase all the vitamins you need in no time. But obviously, that's a little out of the scope of this video. My biggest issue is that there is no EV clearing outside of Berries, which can't be purchased and can only be picked up, so if you mess up the EVs, or need to fix EVs on a re-used Pokemon, it is a pain. I think this will also come in DLC. Gotta have *some* reason to convince battlers to buy the DLC, right? 😅 Edit: Also, as for grinding, if you don't need money, there is a place where if you use a Ham Sandwich, you can grind against level 45 Chanseys and level up a team super fast. Additionally, I found a Super Ham Sandwich (I think it's called? The one with Fairy encounter lvl 2) in the Iron Valiant/Roaring Moon cave is really good, because Iron Valiant and Roaring Moon give crazy amounts of XP as well.

    love the vid as always! i agree about the breeding a lot, even if it ends up being about the same amount of time, I’d rather not be idle waiting for eggs for minutes on end. very VERY disappointed about the Tera shard part as well. I have ideas for teams that absolutely require unique Tera types, and I don’t want to have to grind for 50 of a single type. the lack of in game person to reset EVs also is a step backwards considering they put a person like that in the Isle of Armor… somehow this was a step back in some regards, but especially a step back in time to tweak a team with minor modifications or changing to a different and viable Tera typing to see how to feels compared to the other. I hope that DLC can fix this, but I’m disappointed that it isn’t in the base game and continues to nudge people in the direction of hacking in pokemon.

    One of my biggest issues with Gen 9 competitive is they took away easy ways to reduce EVs. You can’t grow berries like GBA, DS, and 3DS games, and can only have a chance to see some from auctions or glow spots So that team you took all this time to build? Can’t wipe their EVs easily like you could in SWSH. This will add so much more time if you need to adjust your set to accomodate for an everchanging meta Also, I’m not the biggest fan of money being used instead of BP. There's no flow or interactivity with breeding anymore, you just afk, but even then you have to constantly babysit yourself as you do literally nothing or else the basket gets filled and you waste your time... It's legitimately awful. Once I get the bare minimum of what I need I find myself saying "to hell with this garbage I'll just use mints and bottle caps for the rest". one of my favorite things was tossing a bunch of rare pokeball good nature 5ivs into wonder trade, but breeding becoming unstreamlined and all the stats being easier to do with money if you already have money to spare, makes it feel kinda pointless to do so. Getting someone else's 4-5iv breedject on wonder trade also used to be fun, seeing what someone else was doing, hoping I made a project they had yet to start easier, or even have one of us make the other want to finish the project we got handed to us. But like, now whats the point, breeding at the picnic is a hassle, and I could make a pit stop for some vitamins, bottle caps, an ability capsule, and a mint, and be done with it just like that, a nice easy like 560k at the store. The accessibility of all those items is good and healthy for the game, but it's sad that one of my favorite passtimes was lost along the way

In this game, I generally make a great marmalade sandwich, collect eggs every 5 minutes until it runs out (I usually end up with around 60 eggs this way), and then run in circles in a nearby town until they're all hatched. If I find what I'm looking for in the early eggs, I'm left with dozens of eggs that I still have to hatch or else they'll take up space forever. It sucks

For example, not airing an Episode where a Pokemon uses Earthquake shortly after an actual Earthquake hits Japan. Keeping this in mind, it's no surprise they went and removed the contagious virus that... Makes those infected STRONGER, encouraging you to spread it to as many Pokemon as possible? It sucks for EV training, but it makes sense why they'd remove it.

    Of note, there are setups to AFK farm the Ace Tournament with a turbo controller. So while it requires one (there are officially licensed turbo controllers, but they are an additional purchase), you can set up the particular Pokémon, then leave the game running overnight, so the only thing you’ll need to breed for is 0 IVs. Bottle caps and mints are 20K a pop, and with vitamins not being capped anymore, you can cut out a ton of grinding. Tera shards are brutal, but Raid powers help a ton, cutting that grind down, which mainly leaves Ability Patches as an issue. I haven’t done competitive Pokémon setup yet, but making raid mons (level 100 EV trained 5 perfect IVs and correct move pool) usually takes me about an hour or so.

I remember reading a regional champions team profile notes saying that he settled on his Baxcalibur using tera water simply because he didn't have enough shards to make it steel and while at the time it made me laugh because I've been there before, it's also annoying that whenever we take a step forward we also take a step backwards somewhere else; tera shards, breeding and TMs.

    From my personal experience Gen9 is a vast improvement over previous gen on accessibility. I think a lot of change is GF wanting you to do raids and not the old ways of breeding&grinding. Following this approach, if you first build a Iron Hands/Azumarill that can easily solo raids, your resource quickly start snowballing. Breeding/IVs/nature: imo you don’t really need to breed more than a couple of eggs given how easy it is to augment natures with mints and IVs with hyper training at lv50.(imo this is what GF is going for) EVs: I used normal encounter sandwich to get chanseys with power items to get 9HP/8 other stat+1HP EVs plus quite a bit of experience. If I have the resource, then it’s meds+wings, even faster. Levels: there’s more than enough Exp candy from raids for lv50. TM/Tera shards: i agree this is the new grind. All in all, I think SV team building is soooo much faster. And if you have the cash, it takes like 20 minute for a whole team.

I am looking at spending just as much time to build the entire team if not more to get the terra shards I need. Trying to get terra types is either praying it hit it in a raid or mindless grinding for hours to get the shards you need. Hey, nice video! I did some estimates of training methods and was planning to test the time to make a team (once I'm done duping Ability Patches... 14 hours of duping so far) but it seems you beat me to it! My napkin math said 6 hours glitchless for a team without altered tera-type and you took 17, so I'm planning to identify the differences by checking out your stream and comparing whatever I get when I get to testing. I'm doubtful breeding is the right call for IVs. 52 minutes for Torkoal seems like too much, when that would cost ₽80k Bottle Caps + ₽20k Mint = ₽100k. That's one run of the Ace Academy Tournament, much faster than 52 minutes. I'd extend the same logic to Hariyama, Lilligant, and Oranguru. It also cuts finding the 5 IV Ditto, so the only thing that would matter is the 0 IV Ditto. Traditional EV training seems like the fastest way to go, which I'd be fine with if PKRS was still around. There's something quaint about doing it the old ways (though I wonder who at GameFreak sat there and said "yes, let's remove PokéJobs, the thing that makes EV training effectively 5 minutes"). Shard Farming is looking to be a nightmare. I hear 50 shards is anywhere from 4 hours with a casual team to 1.5 hours *if* you have proper raid counters. That's still up to 9 hours of raid grinding on top of training proper raid counters (which need EVs lol). While I hope it gets fixed by DLC, that's already going to be too late for early-season VGC. My last hope is that Battle Stadium rewards a lot of shards for hitting Master Ball rank. Thanks for another cool video!

    Yeah I saw your tweet about ability patch duping(now that this vid is done I'm there now too lol). Yeah, I think I greatly underestimated the power of bottle caps being level 50 + buyable. It was my first time building a team after all, this time I didn't have the power of hindsight like I usually do haha. I was worried the money would be too slow without Gholdengo. I'll be blasting out more teams in the coming weeks prepping for actual irl participation for the first time. Really excited to dive into the meta.

    love reading your comments on blisy’s videos. totally agree that it’s too late for early-season VGC and I’m sad about it. I don’t want to keep waiting for DLC to fix issues with the game that have been in several past generations. like an EV resetter not being in base SwSh, and not being in base SV, but they did put it in the isle of armor DLC because they identified that issue… an easy fix would be to have competitive pokemon be a separate part of the game. disconnected from in-game teams and battles, existing in a special city or something where they stay in permanent boxes exclusively for battling. online or at tournaments. Pokemon Showdown, but inside the game. probably somewhere in the post game. but some kind of system that can make battling the focus of the competitive scene, not breeding or grinding. just my thoughts, would love to read what others thoughts are too

    I'm so glad to find somebody calling out the flaws of the breeding system in this game. So many others seem to love it, and good for them, but I'm not a fan. Everybody is bragging up how you can now AFK egg gather, but having the basket limited to 10 eggs kind of ruins that. I left my game on overnight for some AFK breeding before I knew how things worked, and was incredibly disappointed to have gotten 10 eggs out of 12 hours. Sword and Shield were my first real foray into Masuda Breeding, and I was looking forward to some cool hunts using it in S/V, but at this point I'm probably going to limit myself to the starters.

    This generation was actually the one that I got into VGC, because it was so easy. I built a Sun team revolving around Tera Fire Flutter Mane. Being able to just buy all the power items, bottle caps, and mints, and items I needed made it so easy. Plus having the judge just straight up in the pc made breeding a breeze. Regulation D makes it a bit harder adding some legendary pokemon (I’m in the process of playing through Brilliant Diamond for Cresselia and Heatran for my trick room team) but honestly, once I’ve got them with their right 0 IVs (Atk and Speed for both) I can just transfer them and bottle cap them, which makes it so much easier. Yeah it’s still dumb you need previous games and a separate service to send Pokémon over to Gen 9, but honestly, that’s not as bad because it gives you WAY more options

    Tera shard grinding sucks for sure, not defending it when I say this, BUT you can increase how many shards are dropped per raid with raid power from sandwiches. It still sucks because you need herba mystica for the lvl 2/3 raid power boosts as far as I know, and they only last 30 minutes and are only for a specific type. Sadly that makes them hard to use for joining random raids online. At the very least, you can see what type of raid you have the most of in a day and clear all of those with raid power and get a decent amount of shards. Still really sucks, but at least this can help mitigate the time somewhat, but not a lot at all.

I have a FULL team of shiny, bottle capped, natured, EV trained, lvl 100 Pokémon. With 3 of the 6 having different terra types than they could originally have. And I’m still less in time than Gen 8 or previous.

    After playing this game for quite a while you build a box of max ev trained 6 star raid optimized pokemon and you can just destroy this whole process No worrying about natures because you have infinite mints, only worry about ivs if you need something to be 0 because bottle caps are plenty, money is bountiful because 6 star raids are easy af for you and your raid extermination squad, you have so many exp candies it maxes out The only bit of pain is tms and tera shards, which can be mitigated by just farming the hell out of a stationary raid (Like a mightiest) to get a surplus of vitamins, mints, ability patches and tera shards of that type

    I appreciate how much faster the process is with the ease of hyper training and obtaining mints, this process couldve been optimized a ton by not caring at all about ivs (besides 0 speed) or natures since those can be patched up later. But tera shard requirements are infuriating, it reminds me pf trying to naturally find gigantamax raids before events or IoA. Lots of mons have multiple viable tera types, but even just changing to something off-type is a big investment. Like if you wanted a Dnite or Garganacl, mons who don’t usually want a same type tera type, then the grind becomes necessary. This then can become compounded because when you try a team you’re likely not done on the first draft! Maybe grass Torkoal actually is the spicy tech you want for stab sbeam, resisting water/ground, and ignoring spore and rage powder vs fire’s raw power. So you then need those 50 shards and have to hope you don’t want to change again due to changes in the team or overall meta. Because what if next tera fighting for stab body press/tera blast for ttar becomes something you value? Or fairy for all the dragons? Etc etc. And that’s just one Pokemon of six!

    I'd like to point out a couple of things. 1) You don't need to breed for perfect IVs. For at most $120,000, you can hyper train to get perfect IVs. 2) You can use herbs to get the nature you want. Herbs can be bought in stores for $10,000 per herb. 3) Tera farming is a great way of getting money, XP, and tera shards. By tera farming, you can knock out several birds at once. You could shave off hours if you used tera farming.

  • @imablisy

    It wouldn’t save any time because Tera raid farming is slow as hell. Knocking two birds with one stone doesn’t do shit if it takes 2x the time. Watch my breeding video for more. Capping is bar none the same speed as breeding and slower than last gens

    I would say one of the best ways to build a competitive team in gen 9 would be to grind raids while going through the main game because you can buy bottle caps mints, and vitamins along with ev decrasing berries you can get all the money you need by picking times up of the ground along with playing through the main story with star fall street you get a bunch of LP after every base and you can sell pokemon materials to get even more money if you run out you can grind raids and if you don't have a good pokemon you can use some of your money to get a pokemon like iron hands there are certain builds that make it super easy to solo 5-6 raids with those you can get even more items to sell for money terra shards for the terra type and bottle caps and ability items and mints along with vitamins you can get through it a lot faster except if you need a mon with zero ivs in a certain stat until Nintendo makes a item the can set a iv to zero like a rusty bottle cap

You'd be better off just grinding raids for the mon you want having the HA at that point. Getting rid of Pokerus but not having any replacement for it is so weird, too. Like I can totally see them wanting to tweak it, it's needlessly rare relative to how important it is, but getting rid of it and then not doing any offset? I bred my friend an early Sneasel during our playthroughs (his game came 2 days late) and I had to wait close to an hour for the first egg using none of the supporting methods (because at the time, I didn't know at all how they work, because for whatever reason, the game has no comprehensive descriptions for sandwich powers to my knowledge). Since that was my first Gen9 egg ever, I was afraid they had ruined breeding completely. By now, I have all the buffs to egg generation in place though AND realized the game can generate multiple eggs at once, all of which makes the system much more bearable. But good lord was that first one a bad scare. I thought I was doing something wrong, but no, apparently that can just happen.

    I think these games are even easier (except tera shards) than your time implies given the fact that the other times are based on having knowledge of the best methods and this one not. For example, ev training through KO's is even easier than what you were able to achieve if you abuse encounter sandwiches. Encounter power normal to spawn only chanseys by the fairy team star base for hp evs, or encounter power electric to spawn a ton of raichu in area zero outside research lab 3 for speed evs, I've found ev training to be extremely fast. Having a belly drum sweeper (iron hands, cetitan, huge power azumarill) makes one shotting 5 star raids very easy for making money and getting mints very fast too. The amount of money you can get with this makes bottle caps extremely easy to get as they're about the only thing you might need to spend lots of money on, so even very suboptimal pokemon can be fixed up very easily. Tera shards are inexcusable though. Even with being able to one shot tera raids of almost every type after maxing out a bunch of different pokemon (which itself added up to a decent amount of time for me), it takes at minimum 20 raids of a given type just to change one single pokemon. It's not OK.

  • @DerpySuX
    @DerpySuX Жыл бұрын

    Tera shards are an absolute drag for those who don’t know. I play BSS, which is the official singles format, and in BSS, pretty much every mon wants a tera type that isn’t one of its natural types. For example I’ll use Dragonite, as currently it is the most common and universally agreed to be the best Pokémon in the BSS metagame. Dragonite runs quite a few different sets, all of which want different tera types. The most common sets, Dragon Dance and Choice Band, want Tera Normal for STAB Extreme Speed, or Tera Flying, to have a good Flying STAB in Tera Blast. If you breed for a Dragonite, it will ALWAYS have tera Dragon, as Dratini is a pure Dragon Type. This is just the main set too, Dragonite has tons of sets with different Teras for different situations and teammates. This is just one Pokémon too, top tier threats like Flutter Mane, Annihilape, Iron Hands, Dondozo, Gholdengo, and more all have optimal tera types that require shard grinding, and it is absolutely absurd.

    not sure if this was explained but at 5:25 fluttermane technically spawn in during the day they just despawn on frame 0/1 cause the game checks if it's day or night, the exception to this is a shiny fluttermane as it will not despawn shiny fluttermane even if it's during the day, again not sure if anyone mentioned it at all but though I would incase someone did want to try to get one during the day edit: also since this was before event raids (mainly blissey raids) it did take a while but with the item machine in the dlc and the event raids the money grinding and the tera shard grinding should take way way less time now

    I feel like using a trick room team doesn't quite do the game justice in just how much time you'll actually be saving if you do literally ANYTHING but a trick room team, and yes I do agree that they should let you lower Ivs but for pretty much any other team the average time isn't going to be anywhere NEAR what you presented so a bit misleading there but technically all true.
