I played through all the gears and then just finished 5, god these games are great. I started crying because I killed JD and I realized how much Marcus has been through from chapter 1 of gears 1 to having a son to losing him and the locust killing all his loved ones and now has to deal with swarms and everything he knew to disappear, sometimes I wish I didn’t play the game so I didn’t have to hang on to this burden but I’m so happy I’ve played it I will remember this as my favorite story game next to red dead and halo

The way James tries to hold his tears infront of his dad but Marcus knows exactly how he feels so he lets him cry is just....wow

You can really see the difference when JD dies, or Del dies. Marcus is so heartbroken, can’t even say a word after. But when Del dies, he’s trying his best to keep everyone up. So you really know JD is all that keeps Marcus going

@@Jupiter.141 JD alive is canon.... you can tell without them confirming it, as the cutscenes after dels death have more dialogue and detail, whereas if you pick JD to die, the cutscenes seem a bit rushed and bare in comparison

I first saved Del cuz my thought was "well Del was with me the whole game, I can't just do my boy like that" then when it came time to tell marcus I remembered that I just killed his son. I immediately restarted, cuz I can't do my man Marcus like that. He's lost almost everything already.

Jinn told us about the fertility program, and how Anya died from the second childbirth, right? My theory is that Jinn secretly had that child taken away & told Marcus that they'd died too. This way, she has a Fenix/Stroud child to fully support her regime one day.

Yes, exactly. The way they look at each other and seeing them hug, such a beautiful scene. If any death has to be canon, that'd be it. Also, like you I also like Del alot, but JD has so much more going on character wise, I really want to see how he develops further and his relationship with Kait, if it will grow into something more than friendship, + Marcus has been through enough.

James is the last thing he has left in the world (I mean sure he's still got Cole and Baird and Sam, but still), and if he died, Marcus and Anya's legacy dies with him. @@takaro0 Yeah I mean at this point he's the angry old guy on the radio, his real story was done in GoW 3. Baird is really in his element now more than ever, and is arguably one of the most important humans alive(I mean his mechs took humanity from a collection of vagrants back to an organized society with an impressive economic and military force that's essentially expendable and easily replaced), and Cole, well, he hasn't changed at all. Imagine if Marcus had spotted the beacon under the kraken, damaged but mostly intact, and slipped away while the others fought the thing to hotwire it back into working order. Then he grabs one of it's target designators and radios everyone to get to cover ASAP. At this point the kraken realizes whats going on and rears back to pounce on Marcus(think the end of the old "Mad World" trailer for GoW 1 with Marcus & the corpser), Fahz and Kait have to drag JD into cover, and Marcus, pointing the designator at the kraken's head goes out on 1 last bad ass line like "fry you ugly son of a bitch". That's an ending that would suit Marcus, and one I could easily live with. Cole could have got more than that "i'm still alive, baby" wave and bro hug. He could have had a genuine moment of loss, kneeling at the edge of the wall, staring into the smouldering hole where Marcus used to be. No longer the predictably indomitable "Cole Train", but simply a man who just watched one of his best friends and someone he's been to hell and back with multiple times get incinerated.

The Canon ending is obviously saving JD and I'll tell you why. JDs character arc is not done yet, Same with Marcus. Those 2 characters have butted heads throughout the past two games, and it's time to finish that story arc about improving their father son relationship, it's basic story writing. All Dels character plots have been neatly wrapped up in gears 5, Del dying sets up our main character of this game having lost someone close to her, and sets up JD to grow as a character and mirror the story of his father, Marcus. Now if Del survives, allow me to say that the dialogue is very lazily written for this, much weaker than the other option, you think del would just walk away from Marcus when he's asks where his son is? And fahz has literally no reaction to JDs death, whilst on the opposite side, all of the dialogue for saving JD is so fleshed out. And as for the very final cutscenes, does no one else find it jarring to see Del, a character we only have barely known comfort Marcus at the end, its weird looking. The hugging scene between Marcus and JD is so much more impactful than just straight up making Marcus upset again by killing his son, and reverting him back to the same character we have always known, but with Dels death its time for Marcus and his son to grow as characters together, and have their relationship be repaired, as father and son.

I agree with you. Plus I think that Del's death will be a major part of Gears 6. Maybe we will see Marcus and JD defeat the swarm once and for all to avenge Del or something. Maybe we'll play as Marcus or JD again because I didnt really like playing as Kait.

Not gonna lie this was one of the hardest choices I’ve ever had to make in a video game I chose to save JD but I honestly stood up from my couch and went WHAT when I had to pick, took me ages To decide Replayed it again and beat it this morning and fuck me I hadn’t seen Marcus’ reaction to JD dying until I checked this video, seeing Marcus upset legit breaks my heart man Despite people being negative about Gears for some reason, I think the new cast is great and im so excited for Gears 6 Don’t know why I’m typing this essay I guess I’m just pumped!

Gears 5 has an amazing campaign but online is terrible. Gears always have great campaigns tbh, my only criticism of the newer campaigns is that they haven't really developed any major swarm villains, except for Queen Reyna.

11:52 hit home hard. That’s the moment Marcus realized what happened with Del. He knows exactly what his son is going through. Honestly it made this scene so much more meaningful. Marcus knows what it’s like to lose someone like that.

I can tell whenever Marcus was looking at JD after finding out the news. JD’s face was so hurt and all Marcus saw was his little boy. It was so sweet seeing Marcus embrace him and give him some comfort.

I think they still need to do two choices for the next game because both suck in general I wanna see how marcus copes with the loss and how jd copes witg the loss of del both playthroughs could be. Interesting is they play it correctly

The Coalition did a great job of making you care for both Del and JD, enough that it was a very difficult decision. In the end I went with JD, but felt terrible immediately after.

@@wygnany2069 exactly, Del is the modern Baird...he's good with tech and he tries to keep JD out of trouble. Del is smart and a lot of the time both JD n Kait just ignore his advice...a lot like how people ignored Baird even though he obviously knew best. JD though...he fu$£ed up...the backstory of GOW 5 clearly showed that JD was responsible for some big mistakes and then he messed up again in GOW 5 resulting in the death of numerous people including a Carmine. you make it sound like teamwork is bad...it's not. Del was willing to trust Kait when no else would...JD though was being a paranoid asshole. i don't want JD or Del to die...but if one of them has to die...it should be Del...because Marcus has lost too many people already: he lost Carlos, he lost Dom, he lost his parents...he lost Anya...he can't lose JD too. and if anything Del dying will motivate JD to fight better and be a better soldier...that is just the way it is.

I swear they better not make James the cannon death. FUCK! This game hit me in the feels when I saw Marcus like that.

I saved JD only to spare Marcus the pain of him losing somone else he loves. But damn I was hurt when Del got killed then started sobbing when Jack died.

I loved del but i had to save JD. Marcus lost way too much in gears 3 i couldnt do that to him again :(

@@AnitaMeitner Your rationale for the choice you made is completely fair, choosing to save a war criminal over Del is outright wrong morally speaking. However try to understand that JD is/was more than just a war criminal to delta squad and the choice to save Del over JD would not have been as easy to Kait the character, as it was for you the player. To Kait and Del JD was a close friend. Why would both of them cry over his loss if they shared your moral inclination to let him die? I respect and understand your point of view though. I even completely agree with it and I definitely don't agree with fascist war criminals. I just simply prefer to not see Marcus lose the last of his family, over Kait keeping arguably the better friend. It definitely wasn't any banter from this or the last game that led me to choose JD over Del, it's my connection to his father and his struggle over the first 3 games and not wanting to cause him more pain. Long time fans of the series will probably have a similar perspective.

Hated Fahz at first, but he really grew on me after jd and him joined del and kait

I think JD living will make a stronger person and a reason to keep fighting like Marcus in Gears 3. He should kill the queen with the tags and say “That’s for Del”. Also Fahz and Del were problay gonna end up being best of buds like Barid and Cole

A year after this game, and a year after watching this STILL makes me shed tears man. Like damn.... I don’t think anyone was ready for these outcomes

I saved Del on my first take, then when I had to break the news to Marcus I had to shut off my Xbox afterwards. I was that hurt.

yeah I chose JD first for obvious reasons, and honestly Fahz reaction to not knowing Dels death hit me the hardest. Out of the whole thing I think that one hurt me more than anyone.

Del Death: Marcus and JD seem to have an intimate father/son moment that they had been lacking since the 4th game when JD thought Marcus had died, but overall a milestone in their relationship JD Death: Marcus, in comparison with the loss of friends and comrades in the past, was somewhat lacking in the reaction department when it came to his SON. He screamed when he lost Dom, he just shut down for a moment when he lost his only son. Now, you could say that due to so much loss, he was somewhat unfazed by it or had prepared himself, but ask any father how it feels to lose his child. But overall, I wish neither one had to die.

I would say his reaction isn't entirely out of place. You gotta remember, this guy has been to hell and back...how many times now? Lost how many people? He is one tough-ass motherfucker, right in the middle of a battle. His hard shell cracked for a moment, but then he realised he still has a lot of ass to kick, so he pent it all in until the battle was over.

There’s also a major difference in how and where they died. Dom dies right in front of Marcus, I’m sure he would have a similar reaction if he was there for his sons death

@goups3605 that and also the manner in how Dom died. They were facing impossible odds and were likely to have been killed were it not for Dom's fast actions. Also, while JD's death is certainly heartbreaking, Marcus and Dom were virtually inseparable over the course of the original trilogy. JD had instead turned to a rather unstable lifestyle after first joining the COG against his father's wishes, then deserted and went Outsider and painted a target on his back. It's possible they hadn't spoken since the events of GOW 4 for a good few years and Marcus had spent a long time at his estate mourning the death of his wife.

I chose to save Del my first playthrough cuz he had been the ultimate wingman for Kait, then immediately felt guilty for what I was doing to Marcus. Gonna have to do another one where I save JD and see which one I take into Gears 6.

What's great about when you save JD is that when he pulls away from marcus he knows that he's going through the pain of losing a brother so Marcus hugs him to kinda tell him it's okay I've been there too son and that's what makes that scene hit harder than usual

I couldn't let JD die, I just couldn't. Marcus has lost way too much family and friends and losing his son as well would be too much..

Honestly people picked JD because of Marcus, dude lost a lot. On the other hand saving Del, the dude who has been to hell and back with you on this journey it was just tough to decide between the 2.

Can’t downplay what JD has done/would’ve done had he not forcibly been removed from Delta. He almost died when he had Baird hone in on his armor with the initial Hammer strikes. He’s a soldier too. Del just got to be there 🤷‍♂️

One Eyed Monky yeah but he’ll have no will to live just like dom after losing all of his family and majority of old friends (Anya, JD, Father, Dom, A&B Carmine, Tai, and Kim). Dom had to let that all sink in and in many battle he accepted death at times. Marcus even knew that, so seeing Marcus like that would mean him disappearing in the 6th game. There’s so much story to tell and the war doesn’t seem close to end.

My problem with save JD Marcus will go out like Dom did I am not looking forward if he died in the next game that's why you have a del as a option but in reality both have only friends one has a father while the other is a orphan

The way I saw Marcus saying "No." for the first time, I remembered the moment he lost Tai, Dom and his wife, especially when he moved back! I couldn't choose Del for this.

I just finally beat the campaign tonight and maaannn.. 😥 this hit right in the feels. Reminded me of when me and my boys were playing the campaign when Dom sacrificed himself for the squad.. Amazing story telling. Amazing music. Amazing graphics.

I have never felt so much emotion while playing a videogame. This series manages to hit me right where it hurts… how dare they force me to make such a tough decision.

Man, I've loved gears since the first game came out and this campaign is just amazing. Not even remotely ashamed to admit the emotion I felt at the end and letting it all out. What an amazing job they did with this campaign. I saved JD. Marcus doesn't deserve more loss. Thanks for the video 😁 Awesome stuff.

I saved del but oh man did I make a terrible choice😔😪. I think saving del is more sad. Not only because of Marcus having to know his son is gone but because after what all happened with del and JD's and kaits relationship before hand. With JD trying to redeem himself and kait and del being so angry with him. Made it more sad than saving JD. Just knowing that they know he tried redeeming himself and that they were still angry with him. I also wonder what the coalition is gonna do in gears of war 6. Like at the beginning of the game are they gonna give us a choice. On who stays dead and who is alive or?...

Even though Del doesn't go WOOO! and has the same charisma as Cole he's still a pretty lovable character I hated the fact that I had to save JD over him because I didn't want either to die. It felt like either deaths were in vain or to early

Man This Part Hits Home Because I Lost My Best Friend In Battle. Grew Up Together, Did Everything Together Literally Inseparable And People Thought We We're Real Brother's. My Dad Who Had Also Served With His Best Friend Knew When I Came Home And He Asked "Where's Joey?" And I Turned Away And Started Crying Once He Hugged Me. Seeing This Happened To Marcus And Dom In The 3rd Game. Then JD And Del. Broke My Heart And My Dad Just Knew How Heartbroken I Was. Still To This Day I Carry A Piece Of Him With Me So He'll Always Be My Brother Not By Blood But By Bond.

After watching this numerous times, I really feel Del's death felt the most impactful to the team. Sure, they all reacted sad when JD died, but actually look at everyone else. For JD, mostly Marcus and Kait are a bit torn up about his death. But for Del's death, JD, Kait and Fahz were all affected.

I almost saved Del, but than I thought _"I can't do that to Marcus",_ and damn that cut-scene with him was sad! On the other side if you save JD... his voice actor and and the animators did an amazing job, let me just say that!

The way Marcus steps back from JD's tags as if not touching them makes it not real was so heart-wrenching

It felt like del’s death had a greater impact on the team as a whole while jd’s death just impacted Marcus the most. Just a thought.

he is a Fenix. His story shouldn't end here. But neither should've Del's.

I personally saved JD in part because of Marcus I didn't want him to go through loosing his son, and make all the sacrifices to make sure he lived thus far worthless, specially Anya's sacrifice to give JD life, to me the most narrative impact is created from Del's deaths as he was the glue of the group he was really important and loosing him will expose the characters to what he protected them from, the internal friction, the fact that they can't just laugh it off with one of his jokes. In the end Del's death has a larger impact than JD's death in my opinion, simply because he was that important to everyone, I think that in it part also works towards the redemption of JD's character since he now has to face up to reality and become better loosing his best friend is a really good emoptional trigger to bring him honest redemption, because now he can't just die and that is it, he has to live for the sake of those who aren't there anymore, be it Lizzie, Del or the countless people who died because of his actions and this war, for him to die it would undermine his faults and guilt becuase when you die that is it, all the bad things you have done no longer really matter, because there is no one left to do something to rectify those wrongs, I think that Del's deaths also hits harder because of how he had done nothing wrong, it is one thing to see someone who has wronged others die, but to have someone who is honestly good die hits harder, and it leaves those who have done something wrong but are not bad people to struggle with their actions and that is honestly far more interesting in terms of a narrative.

I chose to save del because he had kaits back throughout 5 and I was playing through the story couch co op with my friend and couldn't bring myself to let him die but that decision made me feel so bad for JD and Marcus. I'm curious to how they're going to go forward with the story whenever 6 is released

The first one is on pc actually. Both the original and remastered (under the name of gears of war ultimate edition) are released on pc. It's hard to get your hands on an original gears of war copy but the remastered version is sold in microsoft store and it goes on sale very often.

I have played 1-3(my favorite being 2), judgment (which in my opinion is underrated but I see why people disliked it) and 4, but I have not played 5.

OMG, I just got passed this part, and this game from start to finish is insane and fantastic. They outdid themselves, especially on the X1X, but I love Marcus so I saved his son. This game like my favorite Gears.

"Should have gone for the head". Having to choose between either could have been done better. Like, her head was right there...why was the obvious choice not a legit option? Sigh.....ok, time to go cry in a corner.

Yeah, I was sorta thinking the same thing. I saved JD because my own loyalty is to the original games, and I couldn't let Marcus lose another person. But the game without a doubt sets you up to save Del. I can't exactly say for sure the human psychology, but it felt like the game was setting it up for JD to die.

Saving jd is the actual ending imo, I do prefer jd over del personally but I think the difference in reactions and how things play out seemed like they put more work into del's death. Leading me to believe that jd being alive is cannon

I mean jd gets barely any focus in this and everyone makes up with him in the end anyway so the whole jd a dickhead thing was ultimately pointless. If they didn’t do that and the gang was getting on as normal through all the story then I think the choice would have been much harder. Not to say the choice wasn’t hard but I think it safe to say everyone saved jd cuz of Marcus when it shouldn’t just be because of that it should be who was the better friend so I had to go del.

That moment when the game made you pick 😮😓😩😫😧😦😟

I guess I’m gonna be that person... I hate how everyone is simply stating “Why can’t Kait just aim for Reyna’s Head?” without thinking about the situation first. Several factors go into the scene between Kait and Reyna, both in game and irl. Imma list them both separately so yall can just have a comment war over it. Don’t @ me because I’m explaining myself once and only once. BE WARNED. SPOILERS AHEAD. AGAIN, WARNING. SPOILERS AHEAD: In game: 1. With everything that Kait, Del and JD have been through up to this point, it would only make sense that Kait would have a strong attachment to both Del and JD. 2. (Queen) Reyna; and indirectly, Myrrah; has been in Kait’s head ever since the nightmares began haunting her. You all know this after Kait and Del’s battle with the Matriarch. After Niles’ AI connected Kait to the Matriarch and subsequently the Hivemind, whatever knowledge and experiences Kait possessed was added to the Hivemind’s knowledge. The connection between Kait, the Matriarch, the Hivemind and Queen Reyna would explain why Reyna made Kait choose between her two best friends or her own life. Reyna KNEW Kait cared for both and so forced her to make a choice. 3-1. What made Kait’s choice difficult for the player was the development between the trio as well as their interactions with Old Sarge Fenix from Gears 4 up to this point. Those who have read the comics and or played the games know for a fact that Marcus has lost nearly everyone he’s cared for up until Gears 4. His brothers, his comrades in arms, his parents, and his wife. His reason for living is his one and only son, James Dominic Fenix. Marcus and James are the only surviving members of the Fenix bloodline and JD is the only surviving Stroud Descendant, as Anya and her parents are both deceased by this time. 3-2. JD and Del are often compared as parallels to Marcus and Dominic from the first three GoW games. They grew up together, joined (and later left) the COG together and fought through near death situations together. Kait’s inclusion into the duo’s adventure deepened their bonds during Gears 4. Between 4 and 5, the three of them along with Marcus were grouped together as the new Delta Squad with Cole as seen earlier in the game. 4. Players who have progressed through Gears 1-4 know the story of Marcus as well as JD’s relationship with Marcus being a very shaky one. The familial love is there, it’s just that JD’s lineage and Marcus’ history has placed a lot of pressure on JD’s shoulders as the son of the Legendary Gear, Sergeant Fenix, hence the actions JD took at Settlement 2 (both the massacre of Settlement 2’s residents by DeeBees and Lizzie’s Death) 5. But as you progress through Gears 5, you slowly begin to see more of Del’s character being developed and flushed out to the point where you (the player) see Del as a brother in arms, much like players did Dom in Gears 1-3. Now, Kait and the players have developed a strong bond towards Marcus, JD and Del that seems increasingly indestructible as the game goes on. This also happens with Jack Mk. III (what I call Gears 5’s Jack bot). 6. By the time Queen Reyna arrives to choke the trio, you’ve reconciled with JD and Fahz, you’ve all banded together to put behind your pasts and fight the oncoming Swarm and Locust threat to New Ephyra. With the Hammer back online and friends new and old together, you arm yourself and fight tooth and nail to push back the Swarm. Your relationship with Kait, Del, JD, and even Fahz has become quite close to, if not the same as, your bonds with the Delta Squad of old. Losing any one of your members to the Swarm is something that you could not possibly want to bear or be able to handle. 7. For those saying Del doesn’t do sh*t, I’m talking strictly from a story standpoint, NOT gameplay. Yes, I know, Del and Jack’s AI can be a little stupid at times when playing solo but I’m talking strict story here. 8-1. Finally, the choice itself. Everyone makes statements about the “obvious choices” being to “throw the knife at Reyna” or “Save JD because Marcus has lost enough people!” I get how you all feel, but at the same time stop and think about it. Reyna could easily snap any one of their necks or all three if Kait chose to attack HER OWN MOTHER (even if she’s corrupted, Kait still feels for Reyna as she did in Gears 5, hence her hesitation in attacking). 8-2. By this time, Del and JD have become Kait’s closest allies next to Marcus within the COG army and losing either of them is something Kait wants to avoid if she can help it. Some players even express their grievances at Del’s Death when you choose to Save JD. 9. All in all, no matter who is chosen as the canon death, MARCUS STILL LOSES. THINK ABOUT IT. Del was like a second son to Marcus because JD and Del did EVERYTHING together. Marcus saw himself and Dom in JD and Del’s friendship. If you choose to save JD, Marcus still grieves with his son at Del’s death because he knows what it’s like to lose a brother. He basically relives the moments where he lost Carlos and Dom through JD’s reaction to Del. In Real Life: 1. You kill Reyna, you kill the Gears series as a whole. Gears 4 was the start of a NEW SAGA in the Gears Franchise. Killing the Queen of the main antagonists in this new saga will end it pretty damn quickly. 2. Having Kait as a queen wouldn’t work because as you see throughout Gears 5, she is FIGHTING THE HIVEMIND. RESISTING ITS TEMPTATIONS. SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BRING HARM TO HER FRIENDS. Kait realizes her position, hence her decision to go AWOL. She leaves the COG in search of answers to protect her friends and, indirectly, the Outsiders she helped to save and enlist in the COG army. 3. It would be kinda nice to see an alternate universe where Kait *does* become Queen, but from what the games have made her character into thus far, I doubt that’s going to become a reality. No concrete proof, just a hunch. I admitted it, so don’t attack me on that. 4. From a story development standpoint, either death can make sense because if you choose to save JD, the game dives into a developmental arc between Marcus and James. If you choose to save Del, Marcus will finally snap as a man with nothing left to lose and players will have a chance to dive into Del’s backstory. I’m really curious regarding which storyline the Coalition decides to make canon, but I’m just pulling educated guesses out of my behind at this point. Whomever you decide to save at this point in the game, know that you are free to choose who to save. But before you all complain about killing Reyna, think carefully about the story and the Gears Franchise’s survival before you start sending flak at me or the Coalition. A very nice, concrete explanation, my friend. Regarding of which death and ending is canon, The Coalition could probably just make it a requeriment at the start of the campaign of Gears of War 6 to ask us if we chose to let live either JD or Del. If that is how they wanna proceed, then the writers are gonna have their work cut out for them.

marcus looked JD in his eyes he seen the same pain he felt when he lost dom.

Marcus’s despondent tone from JD’s death in his voice really hits hard... I’ve seen the gameplay and it broken me when coming to this decision. Never thought a game would make you emotionally feel what war does. Even as early as GOW 2, it can be emotionally painful.

I didn’t hesitate to save JD just cause he’s my new favorite character in the new trilogy Lmao but losing Del hurt nonetheless :’(

I love JD and Marcus' reaction to Dels death, angry and sad at the same time

Honestly either choice is hard, Marcus losing his son, one of the few people left he truly cares for or having his son go through the same pain of losing his closest friend and becoming more like Marcus. Either way a very poetic choice in a game.

Just did another play through and when it came to the choice of saving Del or JD I just tried to imagine the most appropriate play through if it was canon so I chose JD. Del and JD grew up together and are like brothers through gears 4 and the beginning of 5. But after how things turned out at Oscar’s outsider camp and Del choosing to help Kait through thick and thin instead of listening to JD. He became a very likeable character up until the hard choice. JD for me you only learn what is told to you by small conversational talk. It doesn’t really give you much to think about until act 4, which was his redemption for turning his back on Kait when she didn’t when the snatcher to Marcus in Gears 4. He became almost like a hated character after his heroic deeds in gears 4. Now the choice is here and how do I decide? I chose to save JD because it gives the story a whole darker ending. JD wasn’t there for his friends when they needed him most. He lied to them about shooting protestors. He is selfish in his choices which affects his team. Del was the opposite to JD. Should JD be dead in the next Gears I can understand the thought behind it but to me this makes more sense. In a way it was to punish JD for Del to die but this what makes sense to me.
