Thank you. Replaced the heating element and was confused when it still did not dry dishes. This video saved the day.

Another tip you should know if you're watching this video is this. If the Rinse Aid dispenser is completely empty, that can cause the unit NOT to send power to the heating element. I saw another video where the guy mentions this about GE dishwashers. He even said "somehow" the unit behaves this way. Didn't make much sense to me when he said it so I didn't bother with it (also I didn't have any Rinse Aid to test with). So I replaced the float switch like in this video, but that didn't fix it. I tested the limit switch - that was fine. I tested my new float switch to make sure the thermistor was good - and that was fine. I traced all the wires back to the control board thinking there's a break in the connection somewhere, including pulling out the control board - everything looked ok there. When I exhausted all those things, I finally thought, I can just put water into the Rinse Aid dispenser and test. And BAM!!! That was it. Crazy!

This saved me a lot of trouble. I thought it was the heating element as well, but before I replaced it I saw this video. Dishwasher is fixed now! Thanks!!

OMG this guy is a saviour of appliances. I bought an element because my GE dishwasher stopped heating dishes too. Would come out with water all over everything and not cleaning well. Felt warm only because Hot water was being dispersed. Ending up buying another element thinking that was it and realized they both had same resistance of 16-17 ohms when using Multimeter and that would indicate that normal and working. Then I tried this TCO reset button people were talking about under the dishwasher but that never popped so i know that was ok. Searched and searched the internet and youtube and came across this and didn't realize the Flood switch not only regulates WATER LEVELS but also HEATING ELEMENT and when to turn it on and off during the cycle... saved me from buying another dishwasher and more importantly I learned something in the process! Still prefer whirlpool products though... They rarely have issues. Oh and my Dishwasher is about 5 years old.

Thanks for the video. Saved me looking at the heating element. Replaced the flood switch. As soon as I pulled the old one out, I found the flood switch would not rattle. Likely clogged. This fixed my problem.

MANY THANKS TO THIS VIDEO! This is such an under-the-radar problem, and solution! I too suspected all the normal possibilities, then ran across this and other videos talking about a "thermistor" hidden in the float switch. GE should call it "switch, flood with thermistors".. but they don't! 😡 Even though I had first bought a circuit board with relays as per one video, I did not install it but waited for my "flood switch" to arrive after seeing this video. It was the easiest dishwasher repair I've ever done! I unplugged the power from under my sink but otherwise did not move the dishwasher nor turn off the water. Simply vacuumed out the sump, replaced the "switch" and am up and running!! I Sawed up the old assembly and sure enough there's a white float with a metal ring near the top that no doubt activates a magnet switch in the resin-filled post, but there were four wires going up the post so with its 7 pins I suspect there's a thermistor at the top to sense steam when it's Sanitizing, and a second thermistor near the bottom to be able to sense when it's Boosting the water temperature correctly. Whatever, it is not just a float switch!! Dirty birds.

You're the best! I was not looking forward to replacing the heating element. This is the way.

Good advice. I replaced the flood switch and fixed the problem. Anyway next time I'd like to try the following: The new FS when you shake it, there is an element moving inside. In the old one that moving element was stuck with old food. I deeply washed the FS by also lightly hitting the FS to allow the stuck food to come out, after a lot of through washing the element inside become loose again (like the new one). I think this is a magnet that moves up and down with the water level and with time, the dry food makes it get stuck. I did not test it. But if one of you happen to have the same problem my advice would be to remove it, shake, if it doesn't make any noise, wash it thoroughly while shaking and smashing to a soft surface until the element becomes loose again and test it. If it still doesn't work replace the flood switch.

I watched the video and saw your comment. Pulled out the sensor and sure enough it was jam-packed with crud built up over almost a decade. I flushed it with hot water while picking out the crud with an o-ring pick (toothpick would have worked too). That seems to have fixed it! Thanks!!

Good idea! I was having intermittent issues to where the dishwasher would seem to lose power about 2 days after resetting power to the lower control board. Weird thing is I would reset 110v to the whole dishwasher and it wouldn't help, but if I unplugged the mini connector on the bottom of the control board, waited 30 seconds, then reconnected, the dishwasher would work for about 2 days then repeat the same behavior. I replaced the lower control board and it didn't help. I checked the filter basket and it was disgustingly filthy, so I cleaned it out and the area where it sits in and dishwasher seems to be behaving like it should, but I do have the heating issue like is described in this video, so I will try your advice then replace if that doesn't work. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I initially thought of replacing the heating element, but after seeing you fix this problem with a flood switch I thought I'd also try that. Worked like a charm and was very easy to replace. I used my shop vac to remove the water and cleaned both filters (that I did not realize it had). Thanks again for the vid and insight.

I also posted this message on another video and it and yours was the only ones I could find on this subject MY DISHWASHER NOW WASHES AND DRIES!!! I want to say Thank you soooooooo much!!! I ordered the piece from Amazon and it came yesterday, first I had already had a service man come and say it was fixed he replaced the heating element and also replaced the dispenser door on my GE-GDT655SSJSS I was so upset my dishes came out still wet and not clean and cold after the service it was almost 200$ for the service call. Well I took your advice and had my son-in-law help me take out the switch flood assembly and man oh man I can not believe how much calcium was built up on that assemble and down inside the well, we had had a problem with out water a while back with out water company all mu dishes were coming out white and it was somethign to do with our water system finally they got it fixed. I am sure that is when it started, any way after he took it apart for me I started putting the pieces plus the flood assembly into containers of very warm white vinegar I could not believe what came out of the pieced I even had to scrape some to get it loose and I also soaked the spraying arms in a long baking pan with hot white vinegar and poled all the holes with a dental pick in a kit I had for embroidery. Finally all the pieces were clean and I read somewhere someone said their Flood assembly made a noise when they shook it like when you shake a spray paint bottle well my old one did not do this so I stuck it on a jar filled with hot whit vinegar and I can not believe what ugly stuff I got out of that thing after over an hour working on it and removing ugly stuff it would make a noise when it shook I couldn't really see inside so I figured it was cleaned and I decided to put it back in the dishwasher while I waited till next day for the new one to arrive well the dishwasher seemed to wash better but still did not heat or steam, SO when the new piece arrived I was able to remove the old flow assembly and replace it with the new one ALL BY MYSELF I put dishes and tupperware in the dishwasher as I would and ran the cycle BUT I had to leave for a few hours when I came back there was water setting in the bottom "new problem" then I realized where I did not push the dishwasher back inside the space it was tilted forward some so I figured that was the problem with that I ran the drain and it drained then I started a new cycle and let it run I was soooo happy to finally see STEAM coming from the steam outlet and when it finished everythign was HOT AND DRY Thank you so much for this video I have no idea why the service guy did not know this and fix it the first time. As far as i know yours and another video out there showing how to replace this piece and yours has a link it worked for me I just plugged in my serial number and it confirmed it would work in my machine. I am one happy camper to be able to wash my canning jars again and get them HOT Thank you again I can't wait to wash mire dishes LOL

After testing the heater element (15.8 ohms) and thermal limit (has continuity) I decided to check the thermostat and noted 360 ohms, which would indicate the water was already hot. New float switch measured 8.6k ohms. The new switch restored full heat and I thank you and those posting for the help. Made it a very simple and cheap fix.

We were having the same issue with our G&E dishwasher (model GDF520PSJ0SS). Since it was not the same model as the one shown on this video, I was worried that it might not be the same part number. I went to the GE website to find the part number for our model (it was the same part - WD21X10519). I chose to order with my AmazonPrime because I didn't want to wait any longer then 2-days and I got FREE shipping (luckily on the day I ordered it , it was the selling at about the same price as on the GE website $28.25). It took my husband about 15 minutes from start to finish to replace it and now our dishwasher is working properly again. He used our shop-vac to suck out the water and was very careful handling the screws. Thank you so much for posting this video! Dude. This helped so much. I replaced the heating element first, which is a huge pain. Everything I was seeing said it was the heating element or the vent that causes dishes not to dry. Brilliant! The parts store and even a repairman that was there insisted this part could not be the reason it wasn’t drying. Swapped it out anyway as show and problem solved! Thank you! To fellow GE owners - the rear bolt is quite shallow - I had to press firmly to engage the driver but that was literally the ONLY challenge of doing this (along with sopping up the water). It’s a breeze and fixed our dishwasher in like 5 minutes.

This solved my drying problem with my dishwasher and saved me money. After checking the resistance of the heating element (16.9 ohms) I found this video and although I wasn't sure why it would fix the drying, based on all the other comments I thought I'd give it a try. I used my wet-dry shop vac to remove all the water from the tub and to clean the area around the flood switch. I had to use a small pick to remove the soap build up around one of the screws so I could remove it and a magnet to pull it up so it wouldn't drop down while I was removing the switch. The replacement part was about $30. I used lithium grease to help seal the o-ring and then re-assembled. It's a little tight replacing the wiring connector, but very doable. Just to be safe you should turn off the breaker or unplug the power. Thanks for this video and the great instructions.

Small suggestion - perhaps show how to unplug the wire. I tugged a little too much before I realized how to get at the wire. Otherwise everything went well. Definitely clean everything while you are at it. Mine was disgusting.

This is a wonderful video and great advice for fixing the problem of my GE dishwasher not drying dishes. Before trying this, we had a technician out twice --- once to check out the heating element (was ok) and then a second time to replace the main circuit board (also proved ineffective/unnecessary). So after over $400 down the drain we were about to buy a new machine, until we saw this tip and decided to try it. Following the video guidance, my wife and I replaced the flood switch with a new one, in about 10 minutes, and the problem was fixed! In fact, it is possible that all we needed to do was to pull and rinse the old switch and put it back. I'd recommend trying that even before buying the new part, although it is not expensive. Our old one was full of gunk but was easily cleaned. Thank you for taking the time and care to share your experience so expertly.

Great video and very helpful, I had a similar model PDT7760SSJ7SS and it required the same replacement part. It went in as you described. However, on my model I had to take off 4 screws that held the water propeller on the base to get at the back screw easily. And it is good thing I did as it needed a thorough cleaning. Thanks again.

I’ve had the heating element not working as well. This video was very helpful in the “how-to” for the sequence of dealing with replacing the flood switch. Replacing this part is by far the easiest in regards to troubleshooting. The heating element requires the unit to be removed from under the counter. Also, research shows this part fails before the element, so why not try this first.

Thank you sooooo much! I want others to be aware that this switch can be the reason your dishwasher won't fill. This fact doesn't appear very often in online diagnostic information for this problem. First we replaced the water inlet valve which didn't solve the problem. We tested water flow and pressure, inspected wiring and did electronic diagnostics. Finally we found a little statement in a description of this part that its malfunction can prevent water inlet to the machine. So after a lengthy diagnostic process (we have to wait for parts to be shipped as we have no local parts provider) and finally installing the new flood switch the dishwasher works again (knock wood). We appreciated your instructive video!

jstjohn83 I pulled the float and gave it a little shake. Make sure it plugs in with the bottom outlet and try it again. I hope it works for you. I didn't have to buy a new one. I messed with it while cleaning my washer so shook it a bit and now it works. Thank God!

Thanks for making and sharing this, buddy! I pulled my switch and did use an ohmmeter on it. It read 2,700 Ohms, which GE's internal docs say indicates a temperature of 135F. At room temperature (75F) it ought to be 11K or higher. New one on order. With the confidence inspired by your video, I'm looking forward to repairing my machine.

Hey Mayra, thank you very much for your comment as it helped me fix my issue. I read your comment that yours was not spraying or filling with water after you cleaned your dishwasher by cleaning the filter & screen and the exact same happened to me as well and that's when I ran into this video and your comment. I followed your route of opening, cleaning, shaking and putting the float switch back in and viola the dishwasher started working fine and better too I think as all that debris & gunk is gone now. Thank you. For those wondering about my dishwasher model it's GE GDF540HSF4SS that came with our new house in 2015. Many folks suggested to replace the Water Inlet Valve part# AP6286892 but it's actually the Float Switch that is required to be replaced. Thanks to the OP for posting this great video as without this video I would not have found this post. Happy Holidays everyone.

Before you do any of this and buy anything. I recommend you press your TCO button and see if that helps. I changed the heating element and the flood switch and the turbidity sensor after watching countless videos. None of them fixed my heating issue. Finally found that information on the Thermal CutOff switch and it fixed it. Costs $0 to fix and about 10 mins of time. Not sure why everyone making videos about this don't mention this option.

I came across your video while searching for info on a thermostat or control unit for the heating element. I am looking into the Flood Switch first. Just a suggestion that may help you protect yourself from any liability, you may want to mention at the beginning of your video that anybody attempting this repair should make sure that the power is cut off before working on their dishwasher. There are a lot of not too intelligent people out there who know just enough about repairs to dangerous. Anyway, thanks again for the info. I will let you know if this ends up being the repair I need to make.

Yes indeed. This works. I found, however, that I had to also cut the power after replacing it and leave everything off for a few minutes.. otherwise it would run, fill for about 5 secs and repeat. Something about resetting a motor timer? Now after replacing that flood sensor, I am only out 95 bucks ( much cheaper in US than here in Canada!) instead of 500 for the new washer my spouse wanted. Joy.
