--------
In this clip, Garrett Morris discussed his experiences working with other acting legends like Richard Pryor, Bill Duke, George Carlin, and Antonio Fargas. Morris expressed how proud he was to work alongside such talented individuals. He particularly praised Fargas for his role in “The Great White Hope.” Morris shared his experiences protesting with co-star Bill Duke against producers who were violating rules. The protest led to a drastic incident involving the producer's brother, who was the mayor of Zurich, that resulted in their swift expulsion from the city. Morris still maintains a close relationship with Duke till today. He also mentioned his appearances on "Diff’rent Strokes" where he commended Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges’ performances. Finally, the discussion led to Garrett's role on "The Jeffersons" and rumors about Sherman Hemsley being a gay man.

I'd just like to say, I worked with Sherman Hemsley in a revival of the musical Purlie. He was the NICEST person I've ever encountered while working in a fast-pasted environment. He was kind and very caring of others...COMPLETELY different from the bodacious characters he played, but when he walked into his light, he was ON! I was going through a bout of depression at the time, and he saw right through me (without even knowing), asking every day, "how I was doing", and "was I okay?" I'll never forget that, or the way he made a live audience feel when he performed. RIP Sherman. 🖤

The scene in the bathroom with GM and GT, is easily one of the greatest scenes in black cinema. GM imagining and explaining the possibilities of a brave new world that he never had now being offered to the young and smart GT and GT responding to the weight of that opportunity set the tone for many first generation black Americans for the next 30 years.

Even while he was acting, he wasn't trying to hide it (by dating women, talking about women, etc); he just didn't talk about it publicly while he was on "The Jeffersons", but it was an "open secret", people saw him in public with various lovers all the time. He was also open about being a serious pothead, and unfortunately got into coke in a serious way after that, to his detriment; in the last part of his life, he lived in a house with his (male) lover, his dope dealer, and his dealer's gf, everyone sponging off what was left of his money.

He gave to everyone in need to the point it took away from him having a better a quality of life by making sure everyone could keep their lights on and be fed. Garrett Isaac Morris (born February 1, 1937) is an American actor, comedian, writer, and singer. He was part of the original cast of the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live, appearing from 1975 to 1980. Seasons 1-4 (Oct 11, 1975 - May 24, 1980) Edward Regan Murphy (born April 3, 1961) is an American actor and comedian. He rose to fame on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, for which he was a regular cast member from 1980 to 1984. Seasons 5-9 (Nov 15, 1980 - May 12, 1984) According to the book Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live, Morris was frequently unhappy during his tenure on SNL from 1975 to 1980, and expressed the opinion that he was usually typecast in stereotypical roles. Black performers who have followed Morris on SNL have at times been publicly concerned with experiencing the same fate Morris did. Eddie Murphy, for example, told TV Guide in the early 1980s that SNL producer Jean Doumanian "had tried to Garrett Morris me". Source Wiki

Great interview. Thank you so much for covering Todd Bridges and Sherman Hemsley. Todd is a true survivor and Sherman Hemsley lived a very quiet, closeted life. As a White Gay Man who has spent a lot of time with wonderful Black Gay Men, I know that it always was and still is much more difficult for a Black man - especially in the South - to come-out as gay than it is for us White guys. Thank you so much for having this very important but very overlooked discussion. P.S.: Another example is Reginald VelJohnson, Carl Winslow in "Family Matters" (and, before that, LAPD Sgt. Al Powell in *Die Hard).* I wish he would finally come out of the closet. I've always loved him and found him so sexy!!
