You might be true. But the only way to prevent a nuclear war where one side has them and other doesn't is for the other side acquire them too. Like it or not, paradoxically it is less likely for a nuclear state to attack another nuclear state than a non nuclear state. Unfortunately that's the way the world works. So it's long overdue Australia acquired nukes to protect ourselves. Not necessarily against China but a whole range of countries who already have nukes

Easy to be flippant - Australia is upset with their main trading partner and consequently have taken a major decision of beckoning the US and UK nuclear capability... and having and possibly using nuclear weapons they are indeed in the first line of nuclear fire that, incidently suits the US and UK. What is worse the EU free trade agreement has now fallen through due to the submarine deal fiasco and UK will be forced to postpone their free trade deal with Australia over climate change issues. Australia has a bleak decade ahead of higher taxes and poor public services as a result of loosing their top three trading partners.

@@hi4806 Maybe China should think about the huge responsibility, that is resting on the shoulder of a permanent member of the UN - towards the rest of the world?! - As a permanent member you are supposed to lead the way and show the way ..to peaceful coexistence!!! ..not the hostile oppression, we see now! ..but by peaceful means?!! What we have seen so far is not worth following - it is pure oppression and old-fashioned dictatorship. If China wants us all to start respecting them, they should turn around and change their style completely and not just repeat the idiocy that led to World War II. In SO MANY WAYS, China look like Hitler's germany before WW2. ...by repeating the same pattern, we all know so well.... You talk about 'the rights to own nuclear power'.. But before Rights, comes duties... Duties to lift the responsibility to keep the peace - not the right to build a dictatorship, by using it! On the question on why Iran can't manage this responsibility is quite simple - it's clear to everyone, how unstable the country is ..how much grudge and hatred they maintain towards the rest of the free world.

You are spot on. In this argument the other day on a BBC video a Chinese hack had an even bigger go claiming how the Chinese Navy (the PLAN) would blow America out of the water. She said America had no real combat experience since WW2 while China had several major sea battles that they had won. The claims she made were ignorant and absurd but also showed just how badly the Chinese people are about history. So I replied back about the real facts and what the actual numbers of aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines,.... etc. each side actually has. The Chinese do have nuclear subs but very few compared to America. Most of their subs are conventional power and out in the open ocean where staying submerged is an enormous advantage the Americans have a numerical superiority around 5:1. The Chinese have 2 aircraft carriers to America's 11 (soon to be 12). There was an Indian commentator a few months back who was a bit over the top but he made a valid point. The Chinese military is now made up of spoilt (1 child policy) brats with no combat experience. They are great at parades and bullying smaller nations but not much else. The other day I saw a long play interview with an American strategist who said after all the failures of nation building exercises in the middle east Biden had set America back towards its real strength which is in the oceans. The Yanks have finally woken up to how much influence peddling the Chinese have done in the Pacific and are responding. AUKUS only pushes that further and its freaking the Chinese out. Because even after the tariffs that China imposed on Australian products Australia has basically said "We don't care and we aren't falling for any more of your BS" as we waved the middle finger.
