the thing that is wrong with the system is countries like US, australia, and the US, which, despite having inordinate amounts of wealth and power, either ignore struggling countries that they should logically be helping with their ridiculous power, or far worse, but equally if not MORE commonly, make their struggle more difficult by funding coups, break international laws by committing crimes like state terrorism, or outright assassinating their leaders.

What a poor report Stan Grant. You have not done your research and you are asking loaded questions. I thought you were a professional in your field - I am not so sure now. The Chinese were in Kiribati unto 2002, when the former president, Mr Anote Tong, was elected president (after a dissolution of the parliament where his brother failed to hold the position), and the Chinese had a satellite station on Tarawa, and left the country in 3 days, stopping ALL projects. Taiwan came in, and supported the country in good faith until 2019, but they would not fund expensive and unreasonable projects worth tens of millions of $$. China bought their way into the elections and into the Govt of Kiribati, encouraging blatant corruption. You also failed to highlight the fantastic relationship that Australia has with Kiribati over some 4+ decades now, and the incredible work that Australia is doing for education and vaccinations in Kiribati, even recently presenting Kiribati with a brand new 'state of the art' patrol boat to secure their massive EEZ (replacing their first one). The president of Kiribati only has to walk some 100m to the Australian High Commission to express any concerns about issues with Australia. In my view, and with my 26 years association with the people of Kiribati, there is no stronger and more prosperous a relationship with any other country than Australia. Japan or NZ may come in 2nd place. Stop causing a false perception Stan of the reality in-country for the I-Kiribati people and the Australian Government. Maybe your interview should have looked into the way in which China is manipulating small developing countries - that's a real story with many angles you could take!!

I totally agree with what you are saying Damian. After viewing this video, I could see where Taneti is not telling the wholesome truth about switching allegiance from Taiwan to Main Land China. As an Ikiribati living in NZ, I was very disappointed with the outcome of the election in Kiribati where Taneti won. I believe and so does many others that CCP money had a lot to do with the result of this election. The very lame excuse used by Taneti's Government to switch allegiance is the fact that they had asked Taiwan to fund the purchase of one of the two aircrafts on order by the Kiribati Government from Embraer in Brazil. Taiwan very diplomatically refused to do so and so hence the switch in allegiance. So Taneti says, lets ask the CCP if they can fund it for us. The CCP saw an opportunity to jump in and oust Taiwan. Now, there wasn't even a referendum about this topic to the people of Kiribati and yet Taneti claims that his people weren't happy about Taiwan's stance on the request to fund one of these aircrafts. Taneti is playing the higest bider game with his Super power neighbors. Now to the nuclear testing. I believe, if I am not wrong. The Islands of Christmas and the Line Islands including the Phoenix group did not belong to Kiribati, but because we were under British rule then. The United States and Brittan had ownership of those Islands and so the US gave us their consent to own those Islands under condition that no other Foreign Power will acquire any of those Islands to set up military bases or missile bases because of the close proximity to Hawaii and the main land US. So Taneti is painting a very likeable picture to the media and playing the nuclear victim.

I really disagree with almost all of the comments on this video, as in my opinion, all of this is fair and reasonable, and I couldn’t blame them for anything they’re doing. Why blame them for recognising China over Taiwan when Taiwan revoked some of their only funding, which was supposed to be for things necessary for the country’s’ and it’s citizens’ survival, China offers great financial support and Australia, the country that really should have been taking both Taiwan AND China’s place, wasn’t doing anything? Why blame them for being mad at Australia because we’re not committing to any climate goals when they will sink because of climate change and almost all of its inhabitants, none of whom contributed to climate change, will drown? And why blame them for being mad at Australia because we ripped up a perfectly good and nearly hundred-billion-dollar deal in place of pointless nuclear submarines that terrorise their nuclear attack ridden citizens, who have faced the brunt of nuclear weapons? None of the countries that should be helping or at least caring about these struggling countries are, like Indonesia, the US, but especially US, Australia, so who could blame them for pleading that we did, being angry at us because we didn’t, and seeking out the whatever help that they can get in absence of us doing?
