Though I’m not a furry myself, I’ve always found the absolute disdain for them weird as hell. Anthro animals are EVERYWHERE! Cereal mascots, Disney characters, children’s book illustrations, this isn’t a new phenomenon. But make them more colorful and create a community around them and n o w it’s weird? Honestly it looks like fun! Who doesn’t like colorful art and costumes and cute animals?

I have the kind of autism where it’s really hard for me to feel genuinely shame. When people would get on to me about my stimming or covering my ears, I used to openly mock them for having lives that are so boring that me just doing some hand flapping was so mind blowing. When I say mock I don’t mean a sneer, I mean I would fully openly laugh hard as hell at them and ask shit like- if they also get excited when they see a slightly different squirrel. Pretty sure it didn’t do a single thing for my reputation, but they stopped trying to openly tease me about it after the 4th time I hard laughed in their face

When people hate something these days, they tend to obsessively hate it, showing said hatred any time it comes up in any regard. An example could be if someone's father said something about a coworker treating them poorly that day, and their mother takes such offense to it that she gets upset and says the pettiest things whenever that coworker is brought up in the future...And yes, I am speaking from experience for this one.

OMGGG I remember the furry episode of 1000 Ways to Die SO VIVIDLY!! That episode traumatized me as a child, it was so absurd to me. (... I'm also a furry now, ironically, how the turn tables). Also, amazing video, thank you for this!! Furries are genuinely so overhated, it's low hanging fruit. Thank you for doing the proper research, it genuinely was validating to watch!

"Low hanging fruit"? More like "Beating a dead horse" if you ask me.
One time my sibling and I went to a convention and someone thought it'd be funny to pull the fire alarm. The whole building had to evacuate and it was mid November Cold. The cosplayers in revealing costumes started huddling, my sibby and I, along with other fully clothed cosplayers huddled around them. And then the outer ring of the huddle was a wall of furries forming a barrier around us. It was awesome, and they kept us all warm until we could go inside again.

Thank you Kurtis. I’m a furry and autistic and I was scared to watch this bc I thought you’d be hating and honestly it means a lot that you’re open minded
I've always had the mindset if people don't hurt others or themselves, they should just do whatever they want. But I've not really understood the furry community. I never had anything against them but I never understood what it was about. This video cleared up a lot of things that I wouldn't known otherwise. And I must say, reading about how so many was scared to even watch this just broke my heart. Been crying while reading through the comments and I feel bad for not doing more for the community, even if i'm not a part of it.
I had a student who had selective mutism because of parental issues. She felt more comfortable saying small sentences in the suit and liked sewing them. She’d always show me her art. Changed my perspective entirely.

As a kid, I also believed color didn't exist in the past bc of old movies being black and white lmao. The fact that Kurtis had this same belief makes me feel so validated bc every time I mentioned this to someone they just didn't get why I'd think that.
As a furry and a Therian, I have had to move across 3 schools in order of bullying, I am 15 years old and it started when I was 13. I began my exploring and artwork of furries at 12, Becoming one when I turned 13. I told my friends who I had been friends with for 5 years at the time turned me down immediately the second I “came out” as a furry. I do not wear a suit, wear paws, bark, run around on all fours, use litter boxes or call myself an Animal. I know I’m human and all I do is draw animals with the physics features of a human. (Limbs, heads and voices.) I create comics for myself and find it as a way to express myself. I did this in my free time at school and people came past saying “Ew.” “Furry.” It didn’t bother me as I knew I wasn’t the only one who had these things said to them throughout the world. But, at home things started to go down hill with my family. (I will not be sharing.) I gained anxiety and depression and eventually having 1 attempt. Having three friends (who didn’t really care if I was a furry, but still hated them.) at school ifk how they found out I had attempted, But people started yelling things like “go die, try again, show me ur barcodes” and more. It really hurt me and tightened my heart whenever I heard it. I began moving schools and school after school the same things occurred. I am in a mind state right now which I feel much better in, knowing I have new friends who understand me and support my artwork. This went slightly down hill at some point when I broke my wrist and a student pulled on my arm, Yelling “Furry” at the same time. It was recorded and the student was suspended, not expelled.

Cosplay is cringe though too, and so is being a unique dresser. End of the day, these are all things that make you stick out, but some things make you stick out more than others. Usually when someone sticks out, it's because they lack self-awareness, so to cringe is a natural response - you're feeling bad that they've accidentally done something that some people are going to judge them for doing.
@flynntlocke5730

@yurisei6732 To judge someone for being unique or differnt however is how you get racism, fascism, etc. Hate is hate and to get pissed off or judge someone for being thierselve regardless of whether they can help it or not is how we get a society children are scared to grow up in or that put people off bringing kids up in a world full of it. A joke is a joke at the end of the day there is plenty people who don't see it that way however and would rather send people to their grave just for being different. Yes transgender, races, religions etc can all change theirselve technically it doesn't mean they should, just because a dickhead can't get over a new idea. I am aware that racism is worse than the way someone dresses my point was that there is plenty moments where people have been attacked just for wearing something abnormal much like being a different race or religion

wait this actually makes so much sense. cringe really is secondhand embarrassment, and all secondhand embarrassment is is you thinking how uncomfortable and ridiculous it would be to be in that position. cringe culture comes in when people then follow that feeling up with rebuking/mocking the person for making the decision to do what they did, which often comes with a moral condemnation of some sort. the moral condemnation isn't strictly a bad or wrong thing, it's just that the situations in which it's called for vary from person to person because, you know, everyone has different moral codes.
I went to a furcon the other day, and I am now working on my own suit. It was so positive and sweet! Everyone there was so cute, and kind, and just complementing each other and telling each other how cool their fursonas were. they're excited and happy to be there. i know this isn’t about furries but it is about cringe culture and i just want to say that i’m so happy that you’re not pro-cringe culture bc that was the exact main thing that kept me in the closet (trans) for way too long. the fear of “being cringe” is a real thing and it is so harmful to people, especially those in marginalized groups

Eyyy, trans sib! But for the rest of your comment...thankfully, I live in a place where it's mostly just old people who don't care much about all that, but it kinda makes me think of the Jellybean drama, where this kid was harassed, threatened, doxxed, all over content that people just...didn't think was funny Not really offensive or anything, just childish...well, there was also that trend that they accidentally started, and were unable to stop, but people probably wouldn't care if it wasn't for the former...I swear, it's a crazy world

Though...now that I think about it, I remember one of many reasons why I was afraid to come out was because I was worried that people would accuse me of "following internet trends" and not actually having serious gender dysmorphia (couldn't even take any showers at some point, but that's besides the point for now-), so...yeah, internet culture is scary

@@kebbobebop Is it weird that I feel like calling trans people "transgenders", gay people "gays", and stuff like that almost feels like...the og n word for queer people? @@NJ.Magpie One of my special interests is Shakespeare‘s plays. Which is great because they‘re insanely detailed and full of intent AND it opens up possible careers in teaching and acting BUT nobody wants to listen to me about how fascinating old Billy‘s use of incorrect pentameter and chaotic metrical feet of the words in Richard Gloster‘s lines in Richard III Act 3 Scene 7 to show his well he is pretending to be anxious, meek, easily manipulated and overly pious when I do really want to talk about it because it‘s fascinating. Shakespeare plays are a disliked subject by many which is sad because they‘re really really fun even on surface level, listening to the poetry and reading the words without delving in incredibly deep is still quite the experience (especially if you go to a theatre. I had the chance to see Richard III in Stratford last Monday and how the last Act was acted and how the ghosts played the part in the crowning of Henry VII will always be burned into my mind it was glorious). Well, I have my books to annotate and a friend who got into Macbeth through GCSE work so I‘ll have them to talk to if they want to listen but if I just want to talk about something randomly like comparisons between Richard II and Hamlet (how they both show off Shakespeare‘s existentialism in full force) and my friend isn‘t abalone (edit: fuck, avaliable) then I will not be able to because nobody really cares about Shakespeare in most of the discord servers I‘m in and I can only describe it as frustrating. So I can relate when you say nobody really wants to hear about your special interests.

It has always been like this: 1: A part of a certain group does awful, problematic shit. 2: People start to criticize them. 3. People on the internet take it to the extreme and turn it into a circlejerk by spamming obnoxious comments. 4. Then you got underage teenagers jumping on the hate bandwagon because they think being angsty is a sign of maturity.

As more people are becoming open to the existence of autism/neurodivergency and LGBT people, people in general are going out and doing research and looking into themselves to find out if they may be ND or LGBT. In the case of being ND, more people are getting diagnoses, and it's starting to become more obvious why people who are considered "weird" because of these things act the way they do. Cringe culture has always been just looking at these kinds of people and making fun of them for having fun with their interests and/or being "different". You can see it with how most "cringe compilations", how a lot of them just fill their videos with kids having (usually) harmless fun with their favorite show or book, gay people being open with their presentation and identity, and of course, furries.

THIS EXACTLY THIS! I love this conversation. We need to just let people do what makes them happy as long as it's not hurting themselves or others.
I am so glad that someone made a video about this since most people just assume stuff about furries and hate on them. As a furry I've heard tons of negative things from haters, and a lot of phrases I didn't even know existed, yet most of them hadn't done any research at all. They go out and watch compilations, or they read some random news story and then make a generalization, which the same can be said about lgbtq people as well, especially recently. I just discovered your videos today and I love them so much, keep up the amazing content its like drugs to me
This is an AWESOME video! I always try to be supportive of things even if I don't understand it well, but I will (not proudly) admit that I was somewhat judgmental of furry culture before watching this video. After learning more about them, I can now see that not only is furry culture a fun interest, it actually can be a helpful avenue for some neurodivergent people?? Physically and mentally?? That's literally amazing! This is a good lesson that you should always do your research before creating any uneducated judgments. I'm really glad Kurtis made this video as I'm definitely going with this approach for everything moving forward. Yay!!

Both my brothers have autism (I have adhd) and got really into LARPing in their teens. Eventually they gathered a whole group of neurodivergent who would put on costumes and played out whole storylines like real life d&d (they both know how to sew and one of them made a real chainmail vest, over 100 hours of just pulling ring through ring through ring, while the other got lessons from a Hammersmith and made his own weapons) I always had the best time hanging out with the whole group, such interesting lovely people! For me it's not that different from Furries. And it takes balls, it really bettered their social skills, gave them a lot more confidence and a chance to explore their creativity with a group of like minded people. Don't we all want that? :)
