This could pass for a 90s indie film I missed growing up. The attention to detail is shockingly good. Nostalgia overload!

yall must be really young. I'm 24 and this reminds me of my childhood in the mid to late 2000s. Looking at the cars and technology (you can see the computer at 00:57 screams mid to late 2000s), the style of clothing, and the stores.. That comic book stores reminds me of blockbusters and old comic book stores I used to go to as a kid lol. This is def set in the mid to late 2000s..

For real. It’s nice to see some variation. After years of seeing the same kind of face, it really desensitises you towards conventional attractiveness. Probably the same reason why “avant garde” models are so in now - people are bored with the same brand of pretty.

As someone who's not really into the technical side of film, why do people like this stylistic choice? It looks like the awful 90s films that didn't age well and can't be remastered well either.

@@MehdiGlz My guess is the ones that can't be "remastered well" were the ones deliberately shot on DV, which was en vogue for a while in the 90s with the American Indie movement and the Dogme95 movement. Film has always been expensive and HD didn't exist yet so shooting on DV gave it a gritty real-world quality that visually merged documentary with fiction...on a budget. The result were vibrant, gritty films that had a lot of power and the feeling of authenticity to them. Most modern-day films with the HD treatments scrubbing out imperfections make everything feel flat and fake. And I've had issues with A24 for years now deliberately choosing or making films that all look like a swatch book of tone and topic and not having a lot of diverse ideas. I wanna like them more but their catalog has left me disappointed overall.

@@MehdiGlz The same reasons you hate it are probably the same reasons people love it. It has a texture unique to itself. The aesthetic feels like warm velvet; the aesthetic of pristine digital feels like chilled metal; both of them (and everything in-between) can and are brilliant in their own right. But hey if you don't dig it, you don't dig it! S'all good

man im so happy that one of the characters has a cleft lip like me . and it's not negative representation!!!! he's just some guy!! not a villain or some sick twisted psycho, he's literally just some guy and it makes me so happy

I love the look of this. 90's film colour/lighting/framing just hits different. A24 is on fire!!!

The way this is recorded feels like so classic

The director seems to handle comedic undertones beautifully. Watching this one for sure (love the color grade, as well)!

This movie could literally be a 90/80s movie, like many try so hard to give that impression failing terribly but this one almost scares me how accurate it looks

The amount of films being filmed on actual FILM lately...such an incredible feeling. But this one though - must have been filmed on 'preserved' equipment. This trailer invokes major nostalgia - even the audio sounds like its from 95! YO IS THAT ANDY MILONAKIS MAKING A RETURN?!

0:51 I don't know why this shot is just so damn funny. The zoomed in bald head as a way to introduce him. What a great move.

I’d argue this is supposed to shot like an 80s movie. Especially from what is shown in the second half of the trailer, and how the older cartoonist is often shot like he’s in a Stanley Kubrick movie. And from just these clips, it does a nice job of it.

I can see where you're getting that, but I'm still thinking 90s given the handheld nature and the choice of 50mm lenses for close-ups and medium close-ups. The film is trying to emphasize the texture of the optics as a part of the aesthetic and the 80s tended to shy away from that. The main reason that happened at all in the 80s is when they underexposed or when they used mid-80s Kodak stock (which was very grainy e.g. ALIENS).

This movie feels like something out of a time capsule

I like how everyone in this looks like a regular person and not a model. It makes it seem very real

These are the kind of movies we need right now, will definitely be hitting this up with the homies

This is a wonderful film. The presentation is like a time capsule and I can’t speak higher of the actors. Almost everyone in that movie felt like people I knew or had met, to an uncomfortable degree at times. They just were those characters, in that world, in that moment in time. I love A24 not just for the quality of their output, but their willingness to not be tied to one genre

The fact that they story includes Image Comics makes this an automatic 10/10

I really enjoyed this film. It made me laugh way harder than I thought it would! Everything and everyone was so gross that you just can't help but find them endearing. Matthew Maher was such a stand out. I love how you can't actually tell what time period its set in either haha

God I loved this film. Felt like it was made specifically for me. Thank you to the whole cast and crew, and LOVE that grainy 16mm look.

Omg this reminds me so much of the John Hughes' movies and License to Drive, Clerks even. I can't wait.

Not sure if this was shot on film or whether it was digital with post-production filtering to give it that look (if it's the latter, I'm impressed), but even the framing of the shots reminds me of late mid-late 80's independent film - the time of "She's Gotta Have It" and "Eating Raoul". And that's awesome.

Woah this is a great debut for the director The cinematographers are Hunter Zimmy (their Debut) and Sean price Williams.

People in the comments not making any connections in this movie to the legendary American cartoonist Robert Crumb is hurting my soul!! It seems like the movie is about the early days of his career. Honestly who cares if this 'feels' like a 80s or a 90's movie? It;s such a strange lens to view a movie though.

Love Matt Maher. Have seen him in a ton of shows in NYC. Treasure.

Definitely would recommend going to see this! A great coming-of-age story, super dark and funny elements, and the casting was absolutely perfect. Everyone feels so real in this movie, like the director plucked them out of real life.

Oh my god, I love everything about this. It looks like a classic 90s black comedy, like Alexander Payne's "Election" or Todd Solondz's "Happiness" (two of my personal favorites). I have not been this excited for a new film in years.

I was wondering why the look of this feels familiar, and then see Sean Price Williams is the DoP! (Good Time, Heaven Knows What, Queen Of Earth, Golden Exits). I was sold on this after Peter Bradshaw's glowing review. The director has said he's inspired by Robert Crumb and Terry Zwigoff films, (Ghost World, Art School Confidential, Crumb) so I can't wait.

If this weren't an A24 production I'd probably ignore it and mistake it for crap. Kudos to A24 for taking a chance on an adorable, very sincere coming-of-age story with a shoestring budget. Can't wait to see it.

@@N4N0808 a24 is not just a "well known studio." He phrased it poorly. What he meant was that he's glad this movie is distributed by A24 because they usually have fantastic taste.

Love the visual style

ESQUIRE DINER in OZONE PARK QUEENS opening location! I was there when they were filming. My father owns and operates the Esquire Diner in Queens. I worked there for 20 years. Great people to have there and be apart of the whole process. Very professional team and Ben and John were a pleasure to host at the diner alongside Owen Kline and his team. Great trailer everybody.
