At the time I was probably using angelus matte finish, but what I use now and highly highly recommended is liquid kicks

Shaquille Oatmeal write the letters on the shoe then put tape over the words & cut off the tape around the letters, like trace them out w a blade only leaving tape on the letters themselves.
