Fujifilm X-E1 & Fujifilm X-E2 - Masters of Black & White Photography
Фильм және анимация
A short review of the Fujifilm X-E1 & Fujifilm X-E2. These are masters of Black & White Photography. The early Fujifilm sensors are simply incredible, and if you shoot with in the JPEG, Monochrome film simulation then the camera becomes like a monochrome camera. Dedicated to Black and White.
I show example images and talk about how the sensors are perfectly suited to black and white photography, reflecting the analogue style of a past generation.

This one was one of the most productive photo videos that I have watched in the last couple years. Very honest, very direct, right to the point.

Cheers Neale! He was a genius engineer and artist - had a big influence on me. I think he's the reason I try and shoot a lot of my landscapes like oil paintings with analogue cameras. Hope all well with you!
I agree it's fun to shoot b&w with the XE-1. Couple it with some vintage glass and set the camera in the 1:1 format, and hey presto you've got digital 6x6 images.
Totally agree, both my XT1 and XE3 are fantastic for black and white. Very filmic and pleasing look, used to love my GX80 for B&W but can't deny that the Fuji files do have something special about them.
Thanks, Chris, simple and effective communication from the heart !!
Chris, your channel is one of the most valuable content-wise (if not THE most valuable) photograohy and Fujifilm related channels on You Tube. Keep up the great work! Cheers from Warsaw from a fellow photographer and Fujifilm lover :)
Remember as well that the black-and-white settings can also be chosen with the digital equivalent of green, yellow and red filters - another interesting way of adjusting contrast of sky or skin or foliage. Perhaps viewers would find a video explaining this useful as well 😊

Wow, my first camera at 13 was also a Praktica. Really brought some memories back as to why I fell in love with photography in the first place . Loving the Fuji sensors . Wish I'd tried Fuji earlier. Will probably continue using my tried and trusted for my event and wedding work, but for artistic projects, Insta and my street photography going to continue having fun with my X Trans II fuji.
You can shoot in RAW with monochrome as the preview/viewfinder setting.
Because of another video of you, influenced me to buy a X-E2 which I‘m discovering now. But with this video here (& after making pics of my cat) now I’m totally in love with the cam. I was beginning to get bored with all the new & „perrect“ stuff I own, but with this video & now photographing (in the real sense of the meaning) now I‘m back. When I was young, and shooting with Ilford in b&w. What a wonderful feature the camera has, and what a miraculous sensor. Lets cheer to the X-E2! And thank you so much for your inspiration. ❤

One good thing to come out of this dreadful year is how your channel has grown and developed. You have a natural talent for connecting with people. I’ve been thinking of adding an X-E1 to my collection and picked up one from MPB for a decent price after watching your video. Now I just need to be able to get out and use it. Pat

Good day Chris! 🙋🏽♂️ I'm still using my Fujifilm XE1 to this day and I still love the quality of the images that it produce. I am totally agree with you that the BNW of this camera is totally exceptional. The feels and the vibes that gives will make probably make you smile. Though it's a 2nd hand camera which is a gift from my cousin 7 years ago. It's still feels like brand new. Nice vid Chris! 🙏🏾😃

Loved your images and I could not agree more, the Xe 2 and I will add the X-Pro 1 (I don't have the xe1) are magical when it come to SOOC B & W.....
Great photos! I love my X-E2S. There's pure magic in the X-Trans II sensor. My favorite film simulations are B&W and Classic Chrome. I just wish Fuji would bring Acros to the older cameras. I'd love to give that film sim a try.

Great videos Chris, thank you for your content. All the best to you and your loved ones. Regarding your video it made me think about getting an Xtrans I or II second hand cam to do just that...

I think it is part of the challenge to "know" what would look good in monochrome.... like you did, when you where a kid: shooting black and white film you also had to "think away" the colors... I was very disappointed to find out, I did not see the light brown hens, I shot in the grass, using b&w film..... loooooong ago!

Great videos Chris. Hope your boy got better. My Fuji journey started recently with XT30, but my quest is THE COLOR, which made me get into the Nikon D700. Your videos revealed the goodness of early Fuji cameras and I am going for it. Stay the course, all the best.

JPEG+RAF gives you the best of all worlds. You SEE the image (pre-visualised) in B&W and get a JPEG in B&W, but you also later have the option of recovering all of the colour data that is also being captured with each exposure.

Love my X-E1 & X-E2.
My parents bought me the Praktica MTL 3 for my 18th birthday. I wanted a Pentax like my older brother and best friend (and many others) but they couldn’t afford it. I loved the Praktica anyway and still have it today.
How about that, I have an X-E1, and always liked the jpegs from it. Didn't use the monochrome much, but I guess I'll try it more.
I’m a bit partial to the Monochrome+R mode on my X-T10 paired with a polarizer filter on the lens :)
I live very near that location and have taken loads of photos of it but none as good as yours. Yet again you are in inspiration this time for me to try monochrome. I might even buy an X-E1!!
I have Xh-1 and Xt3, but for B&W, I do love my simple 27mm with the Xe-2, I'm so surprised of results. 27mm has got great contrast.
I had just purchased an E2 and than I watched this video; Now I want the E1 too..
I love my xe1 for black and white photography. Can you provide some assistance on focusing by using the back button (manual) mode. I feel because it’s a older sensor I am out of focus on occasion on my intended subject
It would be cool if you got an adapter and used that lens from your old practika camera on your xe bodies, vintage lenses sometimes add an extra bit of magic to b& w photos. Loving your recent videos and your enthusiasm, top work.

Hey Chris ... love the channel. Really enjoying your content. A bit of a Fuji-holic myself and recently expanded the collection with an X-E2s to be my "walk-around" camera. I paired it with my XF18mm f/2 and found some magic. I want to share my recipe for the Ilford HP5+ film sim because the X-Trans II with the XF18mm f/2 and these settings look so much like HP5+ to me I feel, at the moment, I may never change it from this combination. Absolutely love the SOOC JPGs. Give it a try: My Ilford HP5+ film simulation: ISO: 640 (sometimes I'll do Auto 400-6400) Dynamic Range: DR200 Film Sim: Monochrome + Y White Balance: 3300K White Balance Adjustment: R +5, B -3 Sharpness: -1 Highlight: +2 Shadow: +1 Noise Reduction: -2 Long Exposure Noise Reduction: ON Color Space: Adobe RGB Lens Modulation Optimizer: ON It seems to me that these settings really help mimic HP5+'s higher sensitivity in the green-yellow to yellow-orange range and help drop off the red and blue-violet sensitivity much like the actual film. A blue sky goes toward middle gray quickly much like unfiltered HP5+ film.

I was really enjoying the acros with red filter simulation in my more current Fujifilm cameras, so with my recently acquired X-E2s I was nervous about going back to a generic "monochrome" jpeg. I needn't have worried, it looks great. A couple of outings, tweaking the highlight/shadow levels and it is good to go. Its different than acros, but very nice. I enjoyed looking at your photos. I felt like I could feel those bricks in than narrow walkway.
Great video so will try B&W with my xe1 (in cupboard) what difference do the red, yellow and green filters make? Cheers keep going, good stuff.

Hi there, all those options sound good, so you can't really go wrong in my opinion. I guess you need to decide if you like the DSLR style (XT2) or rangefinder style (XE2) once you decide that, you'll be able to see which lenses work with the camera body you decide...
Interesting video!

What are the pros and cons between the X-E1 vs X-E2?
Is there any difference shooting in black and white, vs shooting in colour and editing to b&w?
It is difficult to work in lightroom on JPEG black and white. So i shoot in jpeg black and white and RAW with my Fuji x-e1. Is that correct??
I want to buy a XE1 but I don' find what shop to buy it. Can you recommend to buy where I can buy it with inexpensive cost? I live in Vietnam
I have gotten so used to shooting in monochrome preview that color looks strange in the viewfinder.
Good evening from Ukraine! Your videos are incredible and I enjoy every one of them. I don't have any Fujifilm camera right now. Please tell me, in x-e2 there are already some imitations of the spike, like chrome? And in x-e1 not, do I understand correctly? If you shoot black and white photos, does the x-e2 have an advantage over the x-e1 due to film imitations?

Hi there, thanks for the message. Both the X-E1 and the X-E2 have Fujifilm simulations. In the X-E1 you get: STD, Velvia, Astia, Nh, Ns, Monochrome (B&W), BW (y), BW (r), BW (g), Sepia. I don't think Classic Chrome was added till later camera models. Hope that helps.

It's great to hear about people still using their X-E1's and I totally agree on the special look of the early xtrans sensors. I use my X-T1 with adapted old glass. Pretty hard to beat. I'd add that I always also shoot jpeg + raw so I can change tones and contrast more later. You still get a monocrome evf to focus on contrast. For me, the ability to push the raw through the in-body jpg editor again to try several other b&w jpeg formulas, with fuji's converter.

The x-e2 is also good for provia, classic chrome and velvia!
Curious, is the silver lining on the camera of an X-E2 and and all black X-E2 suggesting they are different functioning cameras? Or are they exactly the same? I’ve seen online both X-E2’s either being all black or white a white border lining on the top front of the camera.

Hi Chris, I just bought a Fuji X-E3... Do you think I can get this filmic look you love from X-E1 or X-E2 by building any recipe in the camera starting from Monochrome or Acros film simulations? If not, which body you recommend as a second one for me just for this purpose (filmic look) between X-E1, X-E2 or X-E2S considering I do a lot of family photography, but also enjoy shooting street and landscape? Thanks a lot in advance.
@ChrisOrange

Hi there, thanks for comment. You can definitely get some great recipes for a filmic look ‘in camera’. Only thing to remember is that the newer cameras from Fujifilm offer more opportunity for building recipes. The older cameras, like the xe1 or xe2 have an older sensor, which I think look very filmic from the start so perhaps wouldn’t need a recipe.
Use spot metering….and what part of the scene am I supposed to meter? I don’t quite understand.
Hello mr orange any chance you sell your xe2 or xe1 this is my first camera ever and i want to buy it from someone trustworthy like you
Actually you can shoot only raw with your Fuji then in the develop module of Lightroom under "camera settings" choose any film simulation the Fuji camera you've used offers (that means obviously ACROS too)
@GarryKnight
3 жыл бұрын
I do this with On1 Photo Raw, as I don't use Lightroom. Unfortunately, as you've said, you can only choose any film simulation offered by the camera that you've used. Perhaps there's some reason why these programs don't let you choose Acros, just because you used an X-E2 or equivalent, but I don't know what that reason is.
Hi Chris, what was the recipe that was created to achieve that beautiful beautiful look?

The X-T2 because of the much better & bigger viewfinder - it's a main part of the fun of shooting, at least!
Hi, Really enjoying your recent series of vids as I'm a long time since boyhood photographer, still have many of my cameras starting off with a VP Twin then Brownie 127 and so on. Later on I learned to develop, process my 35mm and med format films and print my own B&W and colour prints. I'm now well embedded in the Fuji system with 4 cameras + lenses. So I understand your passion for these cameras. But in relation to your recent vids, could you perhaps do a comparison test and show the resulting images, to illustrate the differences you frequently talk about between the Xtrans I & II sensors and the later Xtrans III, so we can see exactly why you believe the earlier sensors are so much better. I don't disagree with you, I'd just be really interested, as would many others, to see the difference.

Hi Yes I did see that one, but it's the difference between those and the later Xtrans III that I'm particularly interested in. I have an XT2, XT3 and X-E3 all have the Xtrans III sensor, but you are so passionate about the earlier ones that I'd really like to see why you feel they are so much better, if they really are so much better for jpegs, I might have to sell my XT2 to fund the purchase of one!!

that's amazing - thanks for the lovely comment! Love these cameras 👏🏻
Hi Chris. I don't agree with your opinion. I don't like the film simulation black/white of the JPGs. Much too flat. Too little contrast. The noise reduction is very bad (also with the setting -2). You can see it in the edges. But the X-Trans 1 sensor definitely has a film-like look. I don't see the reason for this in the JPGs but somewhere else: 1. the noise behaviour at higher ISO values resembles film grain. I have only seen something like this with the X-Pro 1/ X-E1 so far. 2. the contrast and sharpness when changing from light to dark areas. But I use RAW files for this.
Now pair 5he X-E2 with a TTartisans 17mm and you will have an even better old days feeling. :) unfortunately the E1 and E2 are rising in price...

Since month i try to find my look, maybe "the old fuji" look? I tested a lot of cameras, last X-T100, but now i think the magic key are "the old" sensors. Soo but you say X-E1 or X-E2, but i thought there is a different between X-E1 and X-E2 in the picture things? Because of X-Trans vs X-Trans II? Because i dont like the picture of X-Trans III. Yes there a fast cameras, but i didnt feel theme. So for me arent technical specs important (i photograph till last year with the LUMIX GF1 / 20mm 1.7 from 2012) just the end: the picture.

Hi there, I was on the same journey as you, looking for that old film look. @@ChrisOrange Yeaah, somebody who understands me. So what ya say, you feel like, X-E1 or X-E2 (/X-T10 or X-T1) look the same nice? Could you do a caomparison?
