This is short photography tutorial on black & white photography to explain the YELLOW, RED & GREEN filters in your camera. Most cameras have the option to shoot with a filter over your black and white images, and it can be hard to understand what those filters do. I explain their uses and show examples to help you understand how and when to use each of the different filter colours within your camera.

When I shoot B&W, I do want the drama and in fact, I always shoot B&W with the red filter. Thanks for explaining to me why I chose it; and letting me know that I was right (even tho, I couldn't explain it) and why it really don't work in certain scenes. I will be a lot more mindfull using it, thanks again !

Can you explain the difference between using the film simulation mode as opposed to not and using a b&w filter like you’ve discussed above?

I love love film. Grew up on it, photo major in college.. I use the Fuji-film xt-1 is because it feels like film. I typically shoot on the film simulation mode. But I’ve never used the filters 🤔

Thanks Chris. Great explanation. Would the 'red' filter be preferable doing Street Photography where you have a strong light source casting deep shadows? I know it's a personal choice and could change depending on the situation, but in general terms? ATB 👍📷👌

Yes, absolutely - the red filter would be great for that. I like the RED for most things that are not people.

I have an old fuji x10 - it has a different take on colored filters in black and white - if you set it to red, it keeps red things as red and makes the rest black and white - etc - don't know if this was carried through to later versions

Thanks Chris- its very clear. These effects are just on the jpegs, correct? You could apply these to the raw file in post, correct? Thanks again.

  • @ChrisOrange

Yes, exactly - you can actually add the RAW profiles in Lightroom and CP1 now too, so you could shoot RAW and save the effect. Or, as you say - do it in post.

Hello, I've wanted to write to you for a while. Congratulate him on his videos. I recently bought the Fujifilm X-E2S for € 100 and it is a great camera. I am very happy with it. And I even thought about buying the X-M1. I will keep it in mind. Greetings. Note: I see your videos with subtitles, because I am not fluent in English. I live in the Canary Islands, Spain.
