Couple of modification ideas: 1 - set a Fn button to go RAW for one “epic” shot. Camera will revert to jpeg after the shot. 2 - if you’re really reluctant to commit to nu-waaar only, use film simulation bracketing. I did this a lot on a trip to Greece, with astia, velvia, and Acros+R for my settings.

Yeah, I was just thinking you could do simulation bracketing, either to capture a color version, or even just to try out different B&W simulations to see which you prefer.

Big fan of simulation bracketing but would love for Fuji to update firmware to allow for using 3 custom recipe settings for bracketing and also not save three raws when bending the noir rules by shooting jpeg/raw

Cool idea! I’ve been doing something similar: B&W, square format, use LCD to shoot from waist, 23mm. It brings me back to when I used medium format 6x6 with 80mm lens. And the images look soooo classic!

Yes. I did the "same thing" with an old Canon XTi a number of years ago when I upgraded to a higher resolution Canon for the color stuff. I set up that aged 10.1MP XTi for monochrome "only". The lens is the original kit lens, 18-55mm, f:3.5-5.6. It isn't nearly as good as a sensor-dedicated fancy modern monochrome-only Leica, obviously, but it is convenient for those days I feel like going out for those nostalgia-looking photos of yester-year.

I've been using my "old" XE1 in that exact same way. My (really old) Nikon 50mm/1.4 AI is more or less glued on it with a Zhonggyi Lens Turbo II. So that lens is basically a 50/0.95 now! All 7 presets are B/W. I pimped it with a nice leather half case and braided neck strap for that extra retro feel. Love it!

Ok, I love the idea of putting limits on the technical side of your camera to really push yourself to concentrate on one aspect that does help you creatively. I used to do this when I shot for a newspaper years ago. I would go out on assignments and I would think to myself that "today is a 35mm day" or "today is a 60mm" day and that's all I would use to help get out of habits of being stuck creatively. This is a fantastic idea. I will probably do this with my XPro1 and my Industar 50-2 lens. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great video. When I do that "Noir" exercise (or with a color film simulation) I shoot fully manual using as a guide for exposure the respective ISO exposure table that used to come with the film box. And I don't review the pictures until I finish. I forgot: I use a 50mm equivalent lens because that was the most common or popular lens back in the film "era". I may use a 35mm equivalent for a change.

There's actually some good HP5 presets out there for Lightroom. Whether it's true to the film I don't know, but I think it's a hidden gem that looks better than most other types of film emulation presets. That and Neopan are generally pretty good for most things. The HP5 for a basic contrast, and the Neopan for higher contrast. The problem I have with BW editing though is it's hard to go for consistency in looks, because different scenes might look better with more or less contrast and other adjustments. That is one of the benefits of film though, you get a single solitary style from each film that holds up pretty well, all without needing to bother editing.

Love the idea of repurposing old cameras like this, Omar! Y’all don’t forget that film cameras exist! For me, I have an old Olympus OM-1 from 1972 that I shoot black and white film on. Completely manual but simplified: aperture, shutter speed, focus, shoot. If you like a cleaner look, I’d recommend getting a medium format film camera; even the film is cheap.

Have an Acros and an Ilford HP5 recipe ( as well as colour film stocks). But when I go out to shoot for the day I decide which 'film' to use for that day only. So some days are Acros only, and some are Agfa or Kodak colour days only. Loving the jpeg-only workflow!
