9:55 - Comparison with 23mm and 35mm lenses
This lens really appealed to me because of the size and the focal length. I have limited experience with prime lenses, but I had the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 for a while when I had my Sony a7II. I enjoyed it, but I found myself often wanting something a bit wider. This led me to believe that a 35mm focal length may be more my style for a walk around street prime. Since I got my Fuji X-T20, I’ve been looking at the 23mm (35mm equivalent) f2 and f1.4 lenses but decided to try the cheaper and much smaller 27mm pancake lens instead. I liked the idea of the focal length being between a 50 and 35mm focal length, and the fact that it was the smallest lens in the X-mount line up.

Those portraits are amazing! Really good!!! Thanks for the great review.
I like this lens and carry it around all the time because of its compactness and focal range. Your video does a very good job introducing this lens. Keep up the great work!
Really nice, well balanced review! Thanks a lot for sharing, Nick!

Enjoyed the original elements, informative opinions without too much pomp or chaff and some nice shots too. So many people do really crappy lens reviews but this was nice content, I really liked it. (I tend to use a superwide cameraphone for architectural stuff these days while travelling as there's no need to faff switching lenses, the quality is fine and I can keep a nice prime on the Fuji mirrorless).

Thanks a lot!! I have one in the works but I've moved so I'm trying to figure out the new lighting and sound here.
can you do something with the humming low end frequency in your video/s?
I have had the Fuji 27mm 2.8 lens since I bought it new in July (2019), and I have really enjoyed using it. Unfortunately, the focus mechanism has now frozen up and sends an error message to the camera. I cannot get the lens to work properly now. Apparently, this is a problem for a number of photographers using this lens. I have not abused the lens in any way, nor have I dropped or damaged it, so I am thinking that there may be an inherent flaw in the lens focus mechanism. Have any other subscribers to Nick's channel had problems with this lens and if so, was Fujifilm at all helpful in resolving this issue?
Nice video. I also own this lens and that lens cap annoyed the hell out of me. I put on a filter for protection and now everything is good.
Very nice and very informative review.
Super sympathic video, thanks for that. And yes, the lens is lovely.
Haha , I'm usually the pasty white dude everywhere! i bought this lens twice, I thought it was too weird for me and returned it after a few days, but over the next few months it thought the pictures I got with it had a special something. This time I'm keeping it, it's the perfect size on my X-Pro, and I love the 40mm F.L.
Great video! What presets do you use for editing your pictures, they look awesome
@nickslens
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm not entirely certain. It's been a while and I've gone through many preset packs, most of which were free ones. Most of what I did though was just starting with the Fuji profiles or basic camera profiles depending on the shot. Then I'd do things from there individually. But occasionally I'd try a preset out.
if you like pancake style lenses, you may like the "Fuji XM-FL 24mm f/8". its fixed focus and fixed aperture, focus is 1 meter to infinity.
Going to pick up one from the post office tomorrow. I think mine is with the aperture ring.
count me old fashion, but i love strings on lenses covers, specially when traveling.
Hello Nick, Would you recommend this lens for the Fuji X-A2? I have seen several videos showing the lens, but no one uses the X-A2. Perhaps the camera does not have the necessary components to be able to use the pancake lens Thanks for your time.

Great review,
Just found your video. I have found myself conflicted between the xf 27mm and xf 35 f2. I've been using a manual focus 28mm Nikkor lens for my X-T2 and now I'm ready for autofocus! I like the viewing angle of the 40mm equivalent. The fact that maybe, sometimes, the XF 27mm hunts in continuous (I tend to be the family documenter with all the kids running around) and the noise kind of puts me off. So maybe this video helped me go into the 35mm f2 direction. Thank you!
@nickslens
2 жыл бұрын
I'd say go for the 35/23mm f2 if autofocus is your main desire for upgrading. It's going to be a solid choice over this one.
Thanks for this review! Not sure if you realized that whenever you were at your desk, there was this humming bass going on. It was very disturbing on my speaker set up. Setting up a high-pass filter to 80Hz would kill that without affecting your deep voice ;)

I'm deciding among this one, Rokinon/Samyang 12mm f2.0, and Fujinon XF23mm f2. I love taking travel landscape photos (landscape photos with me and family in them), not street photography, and I do want sharper photos. Which one would you recommend I should get? Thank you in advance for your help!
@nickslens
5 жыл бұрын
I have the Samyang 12 f2 and I love it. That's my main landscape lens. I wouldn't recommend the 23 or the 27 for landscape. I'd want something wider.
@joetreadonme
5 жыл бұрын
If you aren't doing street photography and the lens size is not very important to you then you should definitely go for the 23mm f2. That is my favorite lens for my Fuji and I find it's great for landscape work. It focuses fast and the image quality is great. It is much sharper than the 27mm f2. 8 pancake. The 12mm is third party and you won't have autofocus or lens correction in camera. Fuji makes some of the best lenses in the game so you shouldn't be getting third party lenses.
That guy who stopped you to take a picture of him seems like he would be a blast to hang out with.
You are pretty! hahaha Thanks for the video! When I went to fujifilm shop to buy a 27mm F2.8 I bought a 23mm F2.0 instead of this. However, I guess I'll buy this too for daily use with my X-T20. 23mm F2.0 is most probably a much better lens and it is tiny too but, you can't fit the camera in a pocket.

Paulo Parreira It's a tough decision! Id say go for the 23 f2. It's gonna be sharper than the 27 by a little bit, and provide a bit better background separation. And it's a bit wider. If you're doing couples shots, it might be perfect. But the longer focal length of the 35 might also look good.

Jalil Chaouite Awww thanks! 😊 Yes there's a bit of a difference! There's a bit more detail in the Sony files, due to the larger sensor, but it wasn't that much. Not enough for me to want to keep the a7II. Dynic range between the two feels about the same. I definitely love my X-T20 and I prefer it over the a7II, but I'd upgrade to the a7III. For the kind of shooting I do, Fuji is more than enough camera. If I were to go more into professional work, I'd get a newer Sony.

That UV filter will protect the front lens element from scratches and damage! Cheaper to get a new filter than a new lens! Also reduces excessive blue colour cast in sunny weather. Keep it on!
@nickslens
6 жыл бұрын
I've never been a fan of UV filters, really. It'll absolutely protect the lens, but it's also another piece of glass to reduce the quality of images, and something else to worry about when dealing with the lens.
Would you recommend this lens for street photography?
I have the 23/2 and the 27/2.8. 27 is obviously smaller and lighter. It's also sharper at the edges, but has a bit of of barrel distortion and a lot more vignetting. 23 is longer but weather-sealed and has an aperture ring, and at least on my copy is not that sharp at the edges at f/5.6 or larger. It also has basically zero distortion. There's also the 23/1.4 but it's a much larger, heavier and more expensive lens. That gets you considerably better image quality though - sharper, less vignetting, more 'bite'. And of course you get a larger aperture.

Not my experience? I use the X-Pro 1 and the 27mm as a small street set up. With the latest firmware updates for both camera and lens it seems fast enough. I tend to use the X-Pro with prime lenses only (18, 23, 35, 50mm f2) but like the 27mm for it’s small size, not as fast as the latest lenses but it is OK for photo’s....can’t use it for video as it is noisy as hell.
I remember my 20mm pancake in my old Panasonic it used to make that noise as well.

Bryan Adams does camera reviews. OK you’ve probably heard that before. Good review - Nice travel photos. I find this lens interesting on an XT body as an alternative to buying an X100 series camera. I know they are quite different (leaf shutter, 35 mm equivalent focal length on the X100) but the end result of great Fuji images on a small, discreet package is the same. Side note: Bryan Adams is actually quite a well-respected photographer...
You're pretty. :-) Yes, this is the perfect travel lens to be nondescript. With an X-T20 with the grip and thumb rest removed - the camera is TINY!! If you don't want to draw attention, I think it is perfect. Without the grip or thumb rest you can put it in a large pocket, it looks like a big point and shoot. Hopefully thieves will rob someone else. This is why I got it. I have a wide zoom lens, I have telephoto lenses, I got this one, discounted, for discretion and the bigger aperture with autofocus. It is now my, "walking around lens" for when I'm not planning to shoot, but might get an opportunity. I will also take it with me to high crime areas where I want to look like my camera isn't really worth taking. I did have an issue with it this week. The aperture was stuck. The wheel in the front did nothing. The wheel in the back did nothing. I put the camera on manual. Still nothing. I went home, put on a lens with an aperture ring, changed the aperture, took it off, put the 27 mm back on, and THEN the front thumb wheel worked. Poor contact? Next time it happens I'll just try taking the lens off and putting it back on again.
