Oh man thanks for feeding my GAS Samuel. Awesome real world review - always candid, genuine and refreshing. I just got the CV 23mm F1.2 and I love it - everything you said about focus peaking and "punching in" applies to this lens as well. I had bought it over the Fuji 23mm F2 (as I wanted something more compact then the 23mm F1.4 R) and while I sometimes miss the convenience of AF, manual focusing makes me feel more present, invested and conscious of my shooting, which enhances the experience. I have the XF27mm, so not sure if I'll be looking to replace it with this new CV 27mm, as you're making the case for it pretty well. Cheers!

Since one month I own a TTartisan 2,0/25mm. I use it with a X-E4 and so far I am really happy with it. It works well for street with apertures between 4 and 8; a Bokeh test ist still missing. An other advantage is that I can use it with my IR modified X-E3.

AFAIK on the X-Pro3 the Voigtlander lenses does automatically change the framelines and you focus (kinda like a Leica), and on it (and many Fuji bodies) you can set it up such that it automatically zooms in as you turn the focus for critical focus the snapp for the whole view when you have press the shutter. Sad they didn’t backport that to the X-Pro2, but from what I understand newer bodies like the X-Pro3 has an extra electrical contact on the lens mount for lenses like the Voigtlander to enable that feature.

I've been excited for this lens when I've first heard about it's coming release andI think this is the most comprehensive coverage of this lens that I've seen so far; covering outdoor use, comparisons to other lenses, with side-by-side comparisons! Thanks! It's really helpful for deciding whether to get this lens or not. Being a new lens, I think I'll wait around to see a price drop in a used copy. Also, I didn't know that's the proper pronounceation, I'll keep that in mind too hehe.

Glad to see this lens made as I was getting frustrated with all the 2.8 options for x mount. No idea why 2.8 keeps getting decided as the go-to 27mm speed. I understand it makes it pancake but it wouldn't add that much size to make an f2 i'd imagine. I would love to see what a 1.8 would look like size wise. I have the Ultron40mm f2 for my nikon FE2 but haven't processed the rolls of film yet to see how it looks for me but i'm glad to hear you said its your favourite lens in this vid. Appreciate the content as always.

Hi Samuel. I have a question about the behavior of the lens in a specific situation: using the aperture priority mode, does the camera choose the appropriate shutter speed, depending on the chosen aperture? I think this must be the case, because the electronic contacts of the lens transmit that information (the chosen aperture) to the camera, and I can't think of anything that prevents the behavior of the camera described above (in aperture priority mode, deciding the speed consistent sealing). I think I'm right, but I'd like to know your opinion on this. All the best.

Informative and enjoyable review video, thank you! I’ve not been drawn to a 27mm fov (and lije 23 even less) but in your hands you took some lovely photos with it. From your comparisons I agree the Voigtlander looked very good compared to its current rivals. A question for you … you demonstrated the nicer separation / “3-d pop” with the full frame camera; have you found certain lenses for fuji x-mount that also deliver that particularly well? I have the 16mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, a Meike 35mm 1.7, and a Viltrox 13mm 1.4; they work well for me but I don’t know what I don’t know and would hate to be missing out!

Was waiting for your review and honest opinion. Even if this Voigtlander is very sharp and well constructed, the bokeh was a deal-breaker for me. Instead I saved money and got a Pergear 25mm f/1.8 for when I wan't a manual focus experience. The Pergear is surprisingly sharp except for the borders, I tend to crop the images a bit and problem solved. Of course overall it's not as good as the Voigtlander. Nor it has aperture clicks and has worse coatings... but it costs 80 euros! And I love the way it renders. On the Pergear the distance markings aren't precise of course, but with some quick experiment's it's easy to know how to set it to hyperfocal (on my copy it's between the 3m mark and infinity + f/8). Despite not having aperture cliks, the user experince is good, the rings turn smoothly and it feels overall solid. Another option is the TTartisan 27mm f/2.8. It has AF and it's a very good lens for the price, I would say 90% as good as the Fujinon 27mm and costs 200 euros, a price that makes sense for such a lens (the Fujinon 27mm is way overpriced). The AF motor is smoother too compared to the clunky Fujinon 27mm.

@@SamuelStreetlife around 5:12 you talk about the focus throw being very short from 1m to 3m. I've also found this to be the case with my TTArtisan 23mm F1.4. I have bought a Voigtlander 25mm f4 lens which has a lovely focus throw. However, it'd be nice to have something a bit faster sometimes but opening up a fast manual lens sucks if the focus throw is super short between 1m and infinity, any ideas or suggestions would be amazing.

I think in your case you first need to decide on the focal length - 23, 27 or 35. Nokton 35mm is good for night photography and portraits, it has a more specific look wide open (smooth, glow, with pretty flares). 27mm looks good for snapshooting and close-ups, less specific look but still have something in it.

I also like that the 27mm has a hard stop at infinity, like Samuel said. My 35mm does not have this, the focus goes a little beyond infinity, but this does not bother me so much since I shoot slowly.

I personally won‘t get this lens for myself. But only because I don‘t use my Fujifilm cameras primarily for stills. And I already have the 23mm f2 which is my weather sealed all weather lens in case my GR‘s are in danger of the weather. But if I would primarily shoot Fujifilm for photograph than yes I would get one probably! The fujinon 27mm 2.8 never really impressed me. The voigtländer is more fun and I like the results better. I have no experience with the other voigtländer lenses for Fuji x so I can‘t comment much about them. But focal length should be the first deciding factor.

I got the Voigtländer 35mm and the Fuji 35mm f/1.4. The Voigtländer is extremely fun to use, image quality is good and I like the fact that you basically get a two in one lens. Wide open at f/1.2 it is soft, has a certain glow and you can get beautiful lens flares. Step down to f/1.4 or f/2 and everything is sharp and fine again. Would this lens replace my Fuji? Very hard to say. I don't need two 35mm lenses but the Fuji holds sentimental value and I think it is one of their best lenses. I use both lenses on the x pro3 and the whole shooting experience is just lovely and so much fun. I bought a used copy for 400€ and I think even that is bit too much. The retail price of 600-650€ is way too much. I understand the made in Japan part and why it is an expensive lens, but damn, that's a lot of money tbh. If you are considering the 23mm f/1.2 remember that it has field curvature issues. That's not bad, but be aware of that and learn how to use it then it is absolutely no problem.

More importantly and more relevantly I take photos, not very well, of my local folk music club I use a Viltrox 33 1.4 with my Fuji Xt3 as it is dark unfortunately sometimes it is not wide enough 27mm would be perfect apart from most lens are not fast enough. As it is I have to use high ISO so I long for a fast 27mm autofocus lens... manual is OK but missed focus plagues me. It seems 27mm is the only size that doesn't have a fast lens if fast is the right word . To me strange and annoying.

Your claim that with an APS-C sensor you have more depth of field and therefore focussing is less critical is not correct. Let's say you use a 28mm lens that is designed for a full frame camera on your APS-C camera. Because you don't use the complete surface of the lens this causes a crop factor of 1.5x That means that you if you would want a similar angle of view on a full frame camera you would need to use a 42mm lens. Because of the crop factor, the field of view decreases (compared to using the same lens on a full frame camera) The depth of field scale will no longer give you the correct information. The focussing will be even more critical because you will have less depth of field (compared to using the same lens on a full frame camera)
