From boy to man: coming of age in Siberia | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

The Nenetses, the last reindeer breeders of the Great North, live in northern Siberia. Edik is fourteen years old and goes to school in the small village of Antipayouta. During his spring vacation, Edik goes home to see his parents who live in a vast ice desert : the tundra.
In this universe, dominated by the cold and frighteningly violent winds, Edik must learn about the difficult life of a reindeer breeder. If he proves worthy of his ancestors, he will take his place among the men.
Four thousand kilometers away, in southern Siberia, in the heart of the Altaï, live the camel breeders of Bactriane. The last few summers have been too hot, and it’s become more and more difficult to find enough green pastures to feed their entire herd during the winter.
Natsag, the head of the family, has decided that, with the help of the spirits, this is the year he will choose which of his two grandchildren, Altagan or Dsolbo should take charge of half of the herd. The boy he chooses will thus gain his independence and will be recognized in the Mongol world as a true man.
From the north to the south of the huge expanse of Siberia, people have kept their roots and perpetuated their ancient culture of nomadic animal breeders. Edik, Altagan and Dsolbo, children of the steppes and of the tundra, all lovers of dry and often hostile lands, will have to retain the teachings of their elders in their hearts if they are to become true men.

Yeah! and surviving in -60C degrees weather, icy snowstorms and lack of food, they're incredibly tough. Just like the people out there, and I'm glad the boy made it! He gets the respect from his family and ancestors now and will be a reindeer breeder in the Siberian tundra just like they did for 1000s of years. An honest (and very tough) way to live!

This seemingly otherworldly & rare doc. about the life of those people, Nenetses, simply unfolds us to discern how different, somewhat mysterious, & even undiscovered our planet is, depending on the regions. They are truly ingenious & resourceful enough to overcome their maliciously limited resources in such an incredibly inhospitable barren terrain. In addition, you need an unyielding determination, interminable endurance, & immeasurable tenacity to be able to survive in the antagonistic part of our planet, northern Siberia in Russia. Hence, I can't help doffing my hat to those people, & lastly, this doc. is truly of incalculable value to us living in more or less comfortable parts of the earth. (Jan/02/2024)

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of The Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of The Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.« The Gospel of Jesus Christ - Matthew - Chapter 1

I was thinking about the meaning of life which is survival. We invent all sorts of other meanings but they all come down to survival. Religion for instance is a moral code and moral codes are the rules for survival. They even go on about everlasting life, just in case we didn’t get it. Truth is survival is not necessary. The whole species could die out and nothing terrible would happen except the planet would breathe a sigh of relief and other species would get a sporting chance at their own survival.

I'm 60ish now my 3 kids are all in thier 30s I taught all of them how to fish, camp and survive. My 2 boys to hunt. I've taken them into the Rockies close to home. They could survive few nights in the cold. But to live like a Nomad??? No way. They gotta have thier online stuff. But they respect nature and respect thier elders. Something the generation now would not have a clue. I'm glad my father took me hunting and fishing in N. Wisconsin growing up and I was able to pass some skills on to my family. Respect is a word that everyone should know and Understand. I went to school they used paddles to smack ya if you were bad, if you even disrespected the teacher it was game over! Pledge to the flag every day. Every male in 5 generations of my family served this country. My kids say yes sir and no mam ect... I am truly worried about what's going on now. God bless everyone!!!
